There are 420 of them in total based on the latest publication by Luke Dahn from LuxSitPress in 2017.! Justin Chiang has miraculously arranged an additional 20 of these Chorales for traditional brass trio (Trumpet in B-flat, Horn, and Trombone) in Volume II. They sound great and can be used for a variety of purposes including warming up the group at the beginning of a rehearsal, a recital, funeral, religious service, etc. Each chorale is identified with a BWV number, title in German and English translation. You cannot be without these gorgeous pieces.

Schirmer Music Company - Digital (MQ.4989-E). The Hildegard Motets comprise a cycle of nine unaccompanied choral motets using texts by the 12th century abbess Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179). The texts were extracted from Hildegard's opus of more than seventy sacred poems titled Symphinia armonie celestium revelationum. Although these poems have been translated into English (more than once) and some of the translations are quite brilliant, I chose to set the original Latin texts as I felt they remained closer to Hildegard's own thoughts. The nine poems used in this cycle were selected according to their appropriateness to seasons in the Christian liturgical caldendar (thus, most of them can be sung in specific liturgical settings) and to their appropriateness to the structured plan of this cycle as well as for their sheer poetic beauty. Hildegard's poetic vocabulary was unusual and unique; she frequently used language that is not found in standard Latin liturgical texts. As with the music she composed, her poetry is highly ecstatic, vivid and rich in imagery.

Unless otherwise indicated, the pieces in this collection are all set for a standard string quartet of 2 violins, viola, and cello, instruments most closely able to mimic the inflections of the human voice. The intent of these arrangements is to enable the string musician to experience a genre perhaps less familiar, from the relatively simple yet sublime homophonic piece, to the varying degrees of rhythmic complexity of polyphonic works and their juxtaposed interplay of duple and triple rhythmic figures. With the purchase of this collection, permission is granted to photocopy parts as needed. Vocal breath marks (‘) above the staff are meant to serve as guides in phrasing. In keeping with the period, no dynamics are indicated, and tempo markings and slurs are only suggestions. The performer is free to interpret as desired.
