Dance of the Lanna is a portrayal of a festival in Northern Thailand; Lanna refers to the people there, and the festival celebrates rebirth of their heritage. The festival is comprised of several dances depicting events of nature; this piece portrays two of the dances: Dance of the Silk Weaver and Water is Life. The piece opens with portrayal of expressive Thai flute solo, proceeding to portrayal of Thai string orchestra and the PiNai oboe, leading to fast-paced announcement of dancers, moving into the themes of each dance. The style is slow, dramatic, unique movements, appearance of simplistic (but difficult) dances, using piano techniques unique to the style of Thai music. The piece was written for a piano student who wanted to portray music of his country on the piano. The mp3 is from computer notation. Please see the YouTube link for performance where pianist adapted opening to flute and added a dancer.

The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy is a dance for a ballerina. It is the third movement in The Nutcracker pas de deux. This pas de deux is from Act 2 of the 1892 ballet The Nutcracker. It is danced by the principal female dancer. The number was choreographed by Lev Ivanov to music written by Tchaikovsky. Choreographer Marius Petipa wanted the Sugar Plum Fairy's music to sound like drops of water shooting from a fountain. Tchaikovsky found the ideal instrument to do this job in Paris in 1891. It was then that he came across the recently invented celesta. This instrument looked like a piano. It sounded like bells. Tchaikovsky wrote, [The celesta is] midway between a tiny piano and a Glockenspiel, with a divinely wonderful sound. He wanted to use the celesta in The Nutcracker. He asked his publisher to buy one. He wanted to keep the purchase a secret. He did not want other Russian composers to get wind of it and ... use it for unusual effects before me. Tchaikovsky introduced the celesta to Russian music lovers on 19 March 1892 when the Nutcracker Suite was performed for the Russian Musical Society in St. Petersburg. The instrument is forever identified with the Sugar Plum Fairy. It is heard in other parts of Act 2 of The Nutcracker besides the Sugar Plum Fairy's dance.[3] The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy is one of the ballet's best known musical numbers. It is often jazzed up for television commercials at Christmas time. This arrangement was written by Stepan Esipoff and Edited by FLAVIO REGIS CUNHA. It is a fantasy in three movements. Sand Dance, Blue Dream of Astor, and North of the Beach all seek to capture the mood of exotic locations, places that are far from the mundane. Sand Dance is a dance of give-and-take, a dance of playfulness and life. Blue Dream of Astor is in reference to Astor Piazzolla, the Argentine classical composer who was inspired by the music of Tango, creating a lifetime of work rooted in Tango's sounds and rhythms. North of the Beach points one to a different location than what may be expected by a tourist. While visiting the beach may be the goal initially, north of the beach may be ultimately more rewarding to explore as part of a personal adventure.The score and parts in this edition are arranged to be printed double-sided, with correct page turns.Jeffrey Hoover's compositions- music ranging from soloist to symphony orchestra -have received recognition through the SMP Press Contemporary Composition Award, the prestigious Trieste prize, the international Luigi Russolo competition, awards from Mu Phi Epsilon, the Lancaster Fine Arts Festival, grants, publications, fellowships, and more than 25 commissions. They are based and inspired by North and Sub-Saharan African Dances in addition to a reimagining of fairy tales. There are 8 movements making this the biggest project I've ever composed. This quintet may also be performed as a String Orchestra ensemble. I - There is a story about a man named Alexander Dynis (Deniz) who is believed to have ended up in Ruthenia (modern day Ukraine) as a PoW when the Ottomans invaded the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Not much is known about his early life but we do know is that eventually afterwards he was granted the position of Starosta (town mayor/landlord) of Kozieglowy (Poland) by the Bishop of Krakow. He is the only Black starosta that we know of to this day. His story is interesting and is the basis of this movement and was inspired by the soundtrack of a game called Hellish Quart. II - This movement is a dance of ritual which emphasizes the different pitch intonations of the human voices hence the dissonant harmonies. Imagine walking through the savannah and hearing these voices but you are unsure of their intentions. This dance is heavy and percussive. III - This movement is of a young woman who is kidnapped by the Vikings and dreams of escaping captivity. IV - There are 3 distinct motives for this movement which combine to create a battle - like scene, those being the 6 quarter note triplets, the rhythmic motive, and the driving 16th notes.  V - I wanted to create the sounding of the natural horns of the Ancient and Classical Eras and to combine them with a retelling of the Little Red Riding Hood. Her journey begins upon hearing these horns and prompted to ride out to begin her quest.VI/VII/VIII - These movements where edited from my Death Waltzes for the Living. There are hidden titles for number 6 and 7: Loss of Mind and Hospital. These waltzes are a reimagining of Cinderella's life but instead of her story playing out as we know it, she suffers a psychotic break and is transported into our world and rushed to the hospital. The final movement concludes the piece with a Dance of Death. I have had many close encounters with permanent oblivion and the result of this is what I call Hitchcock Horror harmonic language. These encounters supplimented with the dreams of the unconscious realm create an uneasy dance that ends almost as abruptly as they begin.

Slavonic Dances Op 46, written in 1878, was something of a breakthrough work for Czech composer Antonin Dvorak, finally establishing his reputation well beyond his native land. The dances are original melodies, inspired by, and drawing on, the character of traditional national dances, rather than works based on existing folk tunes, as was the fashion among composers at around that time. These Slavonic Dances were originally written for piano 4 hands but, at his publisher’s request, Dvorak produced orchestrated versions shortly thereafter. The volta is an anglicised name for a dance that was popular during the Renaissance. Considered at first to be slightly risqué and controversial it eventually became more respectable but never completely dignified. The first dance uses interesting cross-rhythms.In this series, Renaissance Hits for Strings, some of the most well-known dances from Terpsichore are included. They are all attractive pieces and are sure to be popular at any concerts or end-of-semester events. They are fairly easy to play too and the flexible instrumentation allows any players to take a solo with the melody part. They can be played by string quartet, string orchestra or ideally string ensemble plus any other C-pitch instruments that happen to be available. This publication consists of a score showing the four-part ensemble, keyboard and percussion parts. There are separate parts for violin 1, violin 2, viola (violin 3), cello/bass, percussion and keyboard. Additional instruments are not essential but they add contrasting tone colour. The keyboard part is intended as a guide and when possible the keyboard player should improvise around the part and chords shown. A piano sounds distinctly out of place in this music and a digital or acoustic harpsichord sounds more authentic. Most electronic keyboards have a harpsichord option.Every instrumental part (except percussion) also shows the melody line. This allows anyone to take a solo and play the melody, while the other players remain tacet. Solos can be decided in advance and the parts marked accordingly. Just cross out what you don’t need! The percussion instruments used are similar to those found in elementary school music rooms and usually include a small bass drum or hand-held drum, finger cymbals, clave or small headless tambourine. Two players are usually required and the parts can be interpreted quite freely. Dance music is intended to be fun, and we hope that this arrangement brings you just that.

A prolific composer, instrumentalist, teacher and conductor, Johnson led a varied and successful career in an era in U.S. history that was not inviting to black professionals. His musical interests ranged from the contemporary works of Johann Strauss Jr. to traditional, popular dances.The cotillion is a French country dance that was popular in Europe and America in the 18th century. It was originally danced by four couples in square formation and was an important influence in the development of the square dance in the United States. Francis Johnson composed two sets of six piano accompaniments for this dance. The original 1818 publication even included movement instructions for the eight dancers. The short and charming melodies that he composed are a fitting example of popular dance music of the time.This transcription may be performed as a piano solo, with the piano as a non-solistic instrument within the ensemble or without piano at all. If it is to be a piano solo, the other instruments should not play the passages marked “opt. tacet (optional tacet). If the piano will not be treated soloistically, the conductor can have some or all of the “opt. tacet passages played at their discretion. After completing his studies with Zoltan Kodaly, the Hungarian composer Máthiás Seiber (1905-1960) first worked as a musician in a dance orchestra on an ocean liner which gave him the opportunity to listen to jazz music in New York. From 1928 he taught the first jazz class worldwide at Dr. Koch's Conservatoire in Frankfurt. In the winter term of 1928/29, 19 students had registered with whom he gave a public concert on 3 March 1929 which was broadcast by Radio Frankfurt. After the Nazis had seized power, the jazz class was dissolved, Seiber lost his job and emigrated to London. In 1932 he wrote his piano cycle 'Leichte Tänze' (Easy Dances), one of the early examples of the adoption of jazz forms and styles in so-called serious music. The present arrangement for orchestra is easily playable and is aimed at youth and amateur orchestras. The Malaguena is an emotional song using an ostinato of VIII, VII, VI, V in minor with an improvised melody. The Polo is moderate dance with three beats per measure with hemiola rhythms. It also contains rapid colorations and uses the words ay and ole. Both players play from the score.
