Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer - Arrangement for Voice, Piano and Guitar by Michael Thomas CoullGrandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer is a novelty holiday song.  Written by Randy Brooks, the song was originally performed by Elmo & Patsy, the husband-and-wife duo of Elmo Shropshire and Patsy Trigg in 1979. The lyrics tell the story of a grandmother celebrating at a Christmas Eve party with her family when, while drunk on eggnog and off her medication, she staggers out into a snowstorm despite everyone imploring her not to.  She is found the next day, trampled; Santa and his reindeer are determined to be the culprits when 'incriminating Claus marks' are found on Grandma's back.  Grandpa seems completely unfazed by his wife's demise and spends the holiday 'watching football, drinking beer and playing cards with cousin Mel', while the rest of the family mourns Grandma's death and wonders if the gifts they bought for her should be returned. Christmas dinner otherwise goes on as normal, with a centrepiece of roast goose, figgy pudding for dessert, and 'blue and silver candles' to match Grandma’s hairpiece.  The upshot is a warning to the listeners that Santa is unfit to carry a driver's license!This arrangment of Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer is for solo voice, piano and guitar, but also contains harmonized sections (backing 'oohs', and the final few bars) that also enable this arrangment to be performed by an SSA choir - with the majority of it sung in unison. However it is performed, it is a great choice for a fun, novelty song for Christmas.

Published by Greg Woodward (A0.1460359). My third string quartet is a playful and melodic work, encompassing a wide range of styles and moods with a high degree of thematic unity. The joyful, dance-like character of the opening eventually disintegrates into a moment of sorrow, before a pensive, introspective section with elements of Herrmann and Shostakovich. A grand crescendo leads to a huge A major chord (a reference to the Beatles' A Day In The Life) that gradually becomes more dissonant as it progresses underneath a constant high A pedal point in the first violin. A chant-like section featuring open fifths follows, before a driving, angular section in 5/4. This recurs a few times interspersed with some musical episodes before ushering in a majestic transformation of the earlier chant-like section. After this runs its course and dies out, a final section revisits the dance-like energy of the first section which borrows thematic material from all through the piece before speeding into a final jazzy major sixth pizzacato chord.This would make a good concert piece.Visit my YouTube page for more performances, arrangements and compositions.

This solo feature will undoubtedly be the most talked-about selection on your Winter concert! While the Twelve Days of Christmas has long been a Christmas holiday favorite, you’ve never heard it played like this before. Here is an opportunity for the musical AND comedic talents of one of your most advanced players to be featured! The soloist plays the role of an accomplished, yet most pretentious and self-aggrandizing soloist. The accompanying orchestra parts are not difficult, although a more advanced orchestra will be able to make even more of the light-hearted and occasionally dramatic accompaniment. A two-page outline of suggestions are also provided to help enhance the comedy, but you are invited to put your own comedic stamp on the performance. Early in the work, the soloist has a few very simple solo passages which he or she deftly and smugly executes flawlessly. As the music proceeds, the soloist is highlighted with several showy, but brief, cadenzas. The mood then changes and becomes melodramatic and sorrowful, perhaps requiring a stagehand to produce a handkerchief and dry the tears of the soloist (and perhaps the conductor).
