I was chatting to my mom in South Africa yesterday, and she requested some new music for her upcoming birthday(preferably me singing another aria), but I woke up with this in my head early this morning and so I got to work. It reminded me a little of all the Chopin waltzes I played many moons ago, and it made me sad that he died at the young age of 39, so I decided to call it The Birthday Waltz. Chopin's music really shaped the way I hear melody, and I love his body of work. And my mom has always been my biggest fan, coach and champion, so I hope she likes this piece, and I guess Ill go and record an aria for her now!!! ps I think this piece will be a great preparation for students who are eager to learn some Chopin Waltzes. It sounds harder than it is and I think it's fun to play (and even my husband loved hearing it all day). I hope you enjoy it too.

A Sunny Day in Hell - for Guitar and Cello A small introduction from the guitar opens the work which brings the introductory material as a feeling of a sluggish and almost joyful day, an opening with a dark feeling. Almost like a sunny day in hell, I could say. This opening material gives its turn to a fast-fierce agitated section in where the guitar mostly plays 16th triplets and the cello introduces an exotic dance-like tune. A limping dance, I must add given the title’s influence. Almost like a small party in hell. The following slow section brings up a sad melancholic mood where both instruments share new material with an evocation of a past happy life. The work ends with the main fast material in a variation form. It was my intention to compose a friendly work for performers and audiences.First twist:Performers: prepare audience for an upcoming performance twist/surprise which will not come (at least not during performance). If or when members of the audience later ask about it, performers should assure them that the twist is still an upcoming great event. Have them re-live the performance as they wonder for years to come...If members of the audience should coerce or threaten you by force, you may reveal the twist: In the unfortunate event that you may later end up in hell, this performance guarantees that you will have at least one Sunny Day in HellOptional Second twist:Performers, could as an extra touch, wear fangs (teeth of a vampire or devil) and after performance could reveal them by either biting the lip or casually smiling or yawning at the audience. No audience preparation is needed for this twist. Although wearing Fangs during the performance, could be a nuisance to some performers, they could give to the work a special extra bite. Isaiah 9:2* Humility seeks to draw attention to the Advent portion of the holiday season. This programmatic composition seeks to create an aural picture of the atmosphere both physically and spiritually in the eastern world B. C. and then try and connect it to Christmas traditions today. Students will really enjoyed rehearsing and performing this piece because of it’s programmatic nature, use of a plethora of percussion as well as some unusual uses of and combinations of instruments. Piccolo flute in the low register, soprano saxophone, open tom drums and oboe to create some Middle Eastern ambiance. Then, in order to create ‘the land of the shadow of death’ some unusual techniques call for whispers through instruments, french horns ringing their hands in and out of the bell, flutes playing on the head joints only, attaching a tenor saxophone mouthpiece to a euphonium and a baritone saxophone mouthpiece to a sousaphone. Add some trumpets and trombones playing only on their lead pipes and double reeds buzzing on just the reed and a haunting canvas to build the chaos of a world without salvation is created. Then, with the calming of the piano to present an extremely stark and hallow arrangement of the 7th century antiphon Veni Immanuel, ‘O Come, O Come Immanuel’ which crescendos to the coming of the savior at measure 128 precipitates the a highly antiphonal arrangement of ‘Joy to World.’ While this piece has some characteristics of ‘novelty band music’ there are plenty of technical demands that must be met in order to make it a legitimate concert band literature selection. *THE HOLY BIBLE: NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION®.
