Published by Michael Butkus-Bomier (A0.862503). Thirds, seven-note scalar runs, and syncopation characterize this final entry in the series of Modal Inventions. The Locrian mode was not a true church mode. It was given that name by jazz musicians, who wanted a modal designation for each of the seven modes for every major scale. This piece uses cut-time, and a half-note figure as its subject. The countersubject is a scale. Each exposition and its reverse end with a syncopated series of thirds, like the E Major Invention of Bach. These elements mix and match themselves through the piece, which ends on a B7 chord without a 3rd or 5th degree, giving the finale its ambiguous, Locrian sound. All nine inventions make a nice program for the opening of a three-element recital. They also make an excellent introduction into the world of modern music, since the two-part invention format is familiar, and the scalar aspect is also a musical staple throughout the eras, even though the modal derivatives rather than the parent major scales are used. This one-handed instrument was familiar to composers such as JS Bach, Handel, Telemann, Purcell, Vivaldi etc., but was largely neglected after the invention of valves in the early 19th century - and the subsequent invention of the nodal vent-hole systems in the late 20th-century - until recently, when the elusive lost art of clarino playing (in the fourth octave and above) was cracked by dedicated optimists such as Don L Smithers and JF Madeuf. These arrangements are a stylistic departure from the trumpet's golden age of Baroque repertoire, featuring works well known in the 20th century, and provide excellent training for rhythmic precision, style, pitching and team playing. They're also fun, if you like that sort of thing. Advice on tuning up the differently-pitched instruments and a technical tip are included. The current regulations on SMP mean us little guys can only publish in-copyright works one at a time. So, you can collect them all and make yourself a tome! This arrangement of Happy Birthday was written in 2011 for Edward H Tarr's 75th birthday concert in Basel (CH). Ed conducted many pieces from the Charamela Real, mostly for trumpets in two different tonalities. Happy Birthday was slipped in the programme before the second encore without his knowledge. At his downbeat, he got quite a surprise. The rest of these arrangements were originally written for Lunchtime Tower Music (weather permitting), at the Dartington International Summer School between roughly 2000 and 2010, for courses led by Michael Laird and David Staff. Such performances from the mediæval clock tower involved the various brass and other wind classes playing seriously with an informal atmosphere. Logistical issues, a narrow staircase and the ubiquitous Health-and-Safety regulations prevented the use of timpani on the tower but sometimes larger groups, and those involving vertigo sufferers, played in the courtyard instead. These pieces are the opposite of playing Baroque music on modern, or postmodern instruments. Get them all now and enjoy a refreshing change! Enjoy! DM

The effect of this principle is to convert the laws of physics into statements about relative probabilities instead of absolute certainties.†(He won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1932.).

As suggested in the title, each piece is based on a single compositional fragment or sketch that had otherwise remained incomplete and dormant. Fragment IV is a modern-day two-part invention. The piece explores various permutations of the opening four bar subject, passed between the hands throughout. Meanwhile, a second part is created by using the initial idea in canon, or by introducing a secondary scalic subject. The work is in a ternary structure, with the opening section returning in a shortened form, and with parts swapped over, as the final part. Meanwhile, the middle section explores the initial subject in augmentation, with a varied secondary part. The piece is highly accessible and is appropriate for almost all standards of pianist, including students and more advanced players. In 1999-2000 I recorded 10 instrumental acoustic guitar pieces I like to call Invitations (in part because they are somewhat technical like a Bach invention, but simpler and in a modern style; and because they are meant to sound pleasant enough to invite the listener in!) This one, #5, was based on a simple melodic-chordal idea I got in the shower. I remember rushing to my guitar while still wet and naked, trying to play what I was hearing in my head. It didn't take long because this is probably the simplest of the 10 pieces. I used a Yamaha LL35 steel-string acoustic that I've owned since the early '90s, playing it finger-style with classical technique. I hope you enjoy it!

He seems to have been particularly fond on no. 2 of the set of four. He wrote to Röntgen on 13 April 1901, I hope that Invention No. 2, of which I am very proud, interests you. It is indeed rather quick-I mean passionate, deliberate, very expressive! It is here, primarily, where I’ve breached modernism. It would make me very happy if this invention pleased you. Patrick Miller offers this assessment of these works vis-à -vis Scheker’s other published output:The four pieces in this set seemingly mark a departure from the dense harmonic and rhythmic textures of Schenker’s previously published piano compositions. The intricate melodic lines of these pieces, however, imply a texture rich with harmonic and rhythmic details. … The first invention is a delicate chromatic study, while the second invention is an intense chromatic piece based on the B–A–C–H motive, Bb–A–C–B. With regard to thematic material and texture, the third invention is the most transparent of the set and is an exacting study in finger articulation. The fourth invention is a canon and, according to a printed footnote, is ‘a study after JS Bach’s Invention no. 2 (C minor) .

These arrangements are a stylistic departure from the trumpet's golden age of Baroque repertoire, featuring works well known in the 20th century, and provide excellent training for rhythmic precision, style, pitching and team playing. They're also fun, if you like that sort of thing. Advice on tuning up the differently-pitched instruments and a technical tip are included. The current regulations on SMP mean us little guys can only publish in-copyright works one at a time. So, you can collect them all and make yourself a tome! These arrangements were originally written for Lunchtime Tower Music (weather permitting), at the Dartington International Summer School between roughly 2000 and 2010, for courses led by Michael Laird and David Staff. Such performances from the mediæval clock tower involved the various brass and other wind classes playing seriously with an informal atmosphere. Logistical issues, a narrow staircase and the ubiquitous Health-and-Safety regulations prevented the use of timpani on the tower but sometimes larger groups, and those involving vertigo sufferers, played in the courtyard instead. These pieces are the opposite of playing Baroque music on modern, or postmodern instruments. Get them all now and enjoy a refreshing change!

This musical piece is comprised of two twelve-tone rows, atonal music based on synthetic scales unique to each composition, which are based on medieval plainsong chants whose systemization was begun by Pope Gregory I during the sixth century AD. A simple explanation of this composition is that it is the world's oldest notated music combined with modern 20th-century music theory that eschews traditional melody and harmony for synthetic scales unique to each composition. The music is complex and dissonant, although the conversion of the two plainsong chants to twelve-tone rows retains a semblance of a tonal center at given points throughout. Still, the entire piece of music is that same melody utilized harmonically: just forward, backward, upside-down, backward and upside-down, rhythmically altered, transposed, displaced up or down, or split into smaller cells and then reprocessed in the same way mentioned above. I have also borrowed the Baroque Period techniques of the two-part invention and four-voice fugue combined with serial musical techniques that may offend the average listener's traditional musical sensibilities but make logical structural sense. I used the Dies Irae (The Day of Wrath) and Tuba Mirum (The Last Trumpet Call). The authorship of the chants has been attributed to many saints from Gregory to Thomas of Celano but probably evolved from early Jewish psalmody carried forward by the earliest Jewish converts to Christianity, which further developed into trochaic metered poetry by successive monks. It was set to memorized plainsong heralding back, in part, to Jewish worship. The text of the Dies Irae is very similar to Zephaniah 1:16​. The last trumpet call that raises the dead in Christ is comparable to the Apostle Paul's account written in his first epistle to the Corinthians Chapter 15 and first epistle to the Thessalonians Chapter 4. The two epistles may, or may not, be related to the Final of the Seven Trumpets bringing God's Judgement on the earth spoken of in Revelation 11. The relationship of the trumpet mentioned in the epistles to those written about in Revelation divides theologians, but I digress into unrelated matters. Despite the modern theory, the music is still movingly visceral because of its conceptually descriptive nature. It is full of aural symbolism following the Dies Irae and the Tuba Mirum, making it a type of program music ala Hector Berlioz of the Romantic Period. The music is, therefore, genuinely eclectic because it has blended qualities of several musical periods. The final section of the video explains the symbolism. The music difficulty is virtuosic, extremely taxing to play.
