Water, especially moving water, was always a vibrant part of my childhood, from playing in the small creek down the hill out my back door, to swimming and fishing at Deam Lake, riding riverboats along the Ohio, or enjoying the beaches. Water carries with it the promise of life, the power of nature. Ever Forward is written in three sections - Waves, Wreck and Work. Waves begins as woodwinds sing mellow tunes over the gentle ripples on languid waters in the strings. An abrupt, unannounced Wreck interrupts the relaxed excursion - the siren alarms blaring out against the havoc. Finally, just as sailors would pull together to tackle tough jobs, the community rallies together to Work out answers to the problems that have surfaced. Cellos start up Haul Away, Joe, a short-drag chantey (used mainly for tightening the sheet) where all hands haul together on the last ‘Joe’. More and more join in on the effort, bringing the piece to a spirited finale.

Description This “Meditation,†in the unusual combination of flute, clarinet, tenor saxophone, and trumpet, uses melodic phrases from Kremser Tune, used to sing We Gather Together, and Dona Nobis Pacem. The latter is a round and gives a texture of flowing counterpoint to the homophonic stateliness of the hymn tune. The trumpet gives a clarion sound to entrances of the hymn tunes but elsewhere is mellowed by the three woodwinds. As is common practice in chamber music, each performer will need to listen to the other instruments to achieve a balanced sound. For this reason, relatively few dynamic markings are in the parts, as the performers will determine these in each performance environment. Note that this is not an arrangement or medley of these two melodies, but a distinct composition built on their melodic phrases (motives). For Christian worship, this short piece is appropriate for services of Christian unity and peace, and, in the United States, for Thanksgiving Day. This composition is also available as a standard woodwind quartet (fl ob cl bsn). The first performance was on November 5, 2023, at Saint Andrew Presbyterian Church, Lynchburg, Virginia.

October 8-9 (©2018) – solo piano. I was asked to write a short piece for a September 2018 fire survivors performance of monologues about the October 9, 2017 Redwood Complex fire. The piece depicts events from the afternoon and evening before until the early morning of the fire. These words fit with the sections: Red Flag Warning, Jaye came home from residency! hot wind, Happy reunion, hot wind, romantic evening, hot wind, warm embrace, sleep, smoke or just a hot night?, sleep, Yanahay texts Potter Valley on Fire, red on our ridge, Fire!, how again?, who to call? Everyone we know between here and Potter, landing ember fires, propane tank booms. In that year we experienced a fire three months earlier which burned most of our land including an orchard; the house was spared. In this fire it was an achievable goal to water down the small unburned dry grass and protect home and cabin; many others in our community who had not had the first fire had homes and even lives lost as it was a real firestorm with high winds. In 2019 I wrote an orchestral version with piano that will be published later. The ending on the audio file is different and was not written; I wrote out a piano part for the symphonic version so improvisation is encouraged to depict a fire out of control and a community's experience of that. Although it borrows its short melodic and rhythmic motif from Debussy’s still and calm work, its mood is diametrically opposed – in truth, an appropriate title for this movement might well be blood in the snow! After the texture unwinds, shatters, and disintegrates, the three instruments feel their way in the dark and gradually attempt to piece things back together. Nevertheless, the piano concludes with a muffled, resigned version of its introductory gesture, suggesting that nothing has been resolved. The second movement oscillates between contemplative and playful moods. This ambivalence is present from the start, when the searching violin solo of the opening is punctuated by playful bird-like comments from the piano. The clarinet ushers in a faster middle section during which the three instruments have a dialogue and both the bird idea and the violin’s rising

The first three of these I had actually written as a student at Cal State Bakersfield, but I was so fond of the melodies that I adapted them as a larger work with the intent of sharing on Social Media much like my Quintet for Woodwinds and Marimba. The last movement I wrote to round out the piece as whole and it does not hold back as the time signatures and tonguings border on pyrotechnical when played at tempo. It’s very exciting! This piece has a lot of charm, lyricism, and fun for any brass ensemble. The movements are on the shorter side, so these would work really great as an opener to your program. Enjoy!

The chiaroscuro-technique developed by painters of the Italian renaissance served to intensify contrasts and effects of optical depth. In Klar/Obskur, I tried to transfer the general idea of this technique on the rather unusual instrumentation of two double-reed woodwinds and piano. On the one hand, a clear, well articulated playing is characteristic for these instruments, on the other hand, they have an often underestimated potential of „twilight: air-sounds and fragile, shady colours have a especially attractive when being produced by double-reed instruments (which are often, and superficially regarded as being less capable of differentiated sounds than flute or clarinet). The piano, too, has a broad bandwidth of possibilities between percussive and delicate playing to complement the woodwinds which, in return, can absorb and continue the fading piano sounds. The beginning introduces the two contrasting elements that form the basic material for the piece: a clear, sharp chord, followed by fragile, dim sounds. The changes between these elements as well as their combination and amalgamation produce an enormous spectrum of colours and gesture. After this „motto-like opening follow four quite clearly separated short sections, each of them being characterised by a well-defined texture: a partly almost imperceptible air-sound passage, a short sequence of microintervallic notes, a burst of virtuosity and a recourse to the fragile sounds of the beginning. The second, longer main part consists of three sections merging subtly into each other: a short unisono-passage, marked elastic [federnd], is being dissolved into its basic elements; from these remainders, a confrontation of low, ‚arcane‘ bassoon and piano sounds and a strongly ornamented melodic line of the oboe emerges, leading to a short but powerful climax. The piece is concluded by an extended, relaxed epilogue, containing a short piano solo and a duet of oboe and bassoon and, finally, a quotation of the „elastic character of the middle section.
