Individual movement titles are: Angel of Shavano, Tie Hacks, Hanging Tree, and Grave of Charlie Reynolds. The level of demand for the performers is intermediate to advanced. The guitar is tuned with the third string down a semitone (F sharp), like a transposed lute, which provides for some different sonorities as the stopped and unstopped strings follow a slightly different logic from that used in standard classical guitar music. It is reminiscent in places of the music of Alonso Mudarra, a lutenist and vihuelist of the 16th century but the fast movement (heard at the beginning and the end of the suite) is closer to that of ragtime, albeit a somewhat frenetic ragtime.

Brad was mentored in composition by David Rose (composer for Little House on the Prairie). Brad has composed music for TV, including Hill Street Blues and The 'A' Team, working with Mike Post. Brad has ten albums as The Candlelight Guitarist. When not making music, Brad is often out hiking with his four dogs. Having grown up as a cellist, who played the Suite since I am 11 years of age, I sometimes imagined or even hummed suitable bass notes, which you can't reach on the cello. Also, I imagined certain harmonies, completed in imagination when playing the Suite for years. - With many arrangements by guitarists, who didn't play the Suite on cello, I can hear, they are not going the right way! - Bach himself arranged cello Suite No 5 for lute - as lute Suite No 3 - giving us an example of how he himself went about when adding accompaniment notes - and he certainly did!Good examples are Gavotte 2 and the Gigue from Cello Suite No 5 - or lute Suite No 3. Bach also arranged the violin Partita No 3 in E major for lute - as lute Suite No 4, another example of how he himself went about. - In the arrangement here, I tried also to transfer the slurs on the cello sometimes to the guitar - e.g. in the Gigue - when I found it brings better the intended articulation better out.I hope you thoroughly enjoy the arrangement!Â

(Score and parts are included in a single download.)As the pun used for the title for this piece suggests, it is a suite of generally light movements that still possess a certain amount of depth. Though the harmonies are generally pleasant, seeming to have popular or jazz origins, there are various musical spices adding more body to that sweetness. The first movement, Improvisation, captures the mood of a free-form prelude, as if the players were improvising on a set of chords, some of which seem to be influenced by jazz or other non-classical idioms. Dialogue, the second movement, is a conversation between the violin and guitar. There are times when one instrument accompanies the other, but generally both players add important thoughts to the rhythmically diverse conversation. The third movement begins with a guitar accompaniment supporting the violin’s Song. Later, these two roles are reversed. Dance is essentially a disagreement. The violin plays a quasi-aristocratic eighteenth-century gavotte while the guitar prefers a sombre chromatic waltz. There is emphatic disagreement over which dance the players should perform, but in the end a solution seems to be found. The last movement, Pursuit, is a playful chase that is interrupted by a dreamy pause to catch one’s breath. Complete performance duration is ca. 15 minutes.

Shavano Suite is a set of four pieces inspired by folklore and campfire tales from the Mount Shavano/Maysville area in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. The suite was originally scored for classical guitar duet. This version I arranged for piano and guitar with the assistance of my piano virtuoso friend, Abe Minzer. Total performance time is18 minutes. Each movement, however, works well as a stand alone concert piece. Individual movement titles are: Angel of Shavano, Tie Hacks, Hanging Tree and Grave of Charlie Reynolds. The level of demand for the performers is intermediate to advanced. The piano part is fun to perform, requiring the pianist to paly inside the piano. This downoad includes all four movements performed with the composer on guitar and Abe Minzer on piano. The guitar is tuned with the third string down a semitone (F sharp), like a transposed lute, which provides for some different sonorities as the stopped and unstopped strings follow a slightly different logic from that used in standard classical guitar music. It is reminiscent in places of the music of Alonso Mudarra, a lutenist and vihuelist of the 16th century but the fast movement (heard at the beginning and the end of the suite) is closer to that of ragtime, albeit a somewhat frenetic ragtime. Performed here by András Csáki.

The percussion parts are easy and meant to be performed by members of the choir. This download contains a recording of the choir version with only one voice per part. Soprano part is Gail Carpenter or Cindy Saunders-Katz, alto is Becky Hewett, tenor is John Carpenter and bass is Charles Rann. The composer plays the guitar part and all percussion. The picture of my grandkids looks like a poster for cultural diversity. Their varied genetic backgrounds presented an opportunity to compose an eclectic suite with each piece presenting a style representative of their unique genetic heritage. Performance time for the entire suite is 23 minutes but each piece could stand alone on a concert program. Individual titles are: Riely's Dance, Ananlysia's Margarita, Toy for Timothy, Air for Chiara, Lullaby for Mirabai,and Soren's Jig. The Grim Reaper’s Suite consists of five humorous and at the same dark pieces for five guitars to celebrate the humanity of the Grim Reaper. Two of these pieces are the well-known tune of Happy Birthday in two different and witty variations. The work was conceived to be performed live during the projection of a film by Apostolos Paraskevas called I Finally Did It. The work was premiered in 2009 by an array of well-known soloists at the Iserlohn Guitar Festival in Germany. Duration: approx. 10 minutes Apostolos Paraskevas is a classical guitarist and composer as well as an award-winning film director and producer. He has received multiple international awards for his compositions and was nominated for a Grammy Award. He is the only guitarist ever to have a major orchestral piece performed at Carnegie Hall under the direction of Lukas Foss––and the only musician who has performed there in a Grim Reaper outfit. He was the founder and served for 16 years as the artistic director of the International Guitar Congress-Festival of Corfu, Greece. He is a voting member of the Recording Academy (Grammys). After his undergraduate music studies in Volos he pursued advanced studies in classical guitar with Costas Cotsiolis (diploma, 1990) and Leo Brouwer (Havana 1984, 1988), as well as postgraduate studies in composition with Lukas Foss and Theodore Antoniou (DMA in composition, Boston University, 1998). Paraskevas embarked on a successful career as a guitar soloist and contemporary composer, achieving distinctions in both disciplines: Grammy nomination for Chase Dance (Bridge Records, 1999); first prize for Night Wanderings (Lukas Foss Composition Competition, 2000); first prize for Phygein Adynaton (National Composers Conference, 1997); and numerous prestigious commissions, performances, and publications. Following teaching posts at Northeastern and Boston Universities, Paraskevas has taught since 2001 at the Berklee College of Music in Boston (professor of composition and classical guitar). His eclectic compositional style arises as an idiosyncratic integration of seemingly conflicting influences – from avant-garde approaches to harmonic structure, form, and timbre, to pop-folk modal and rhythmical concepts – amalgamated into a personal evocative musical language, characterized by rhythmic verve, melodic grace, dramatic (and sometimes unexpectedly humorous) gestures, and ritualistic or theatrical elements.
