It can be suited ideally in any setting.Program Note“Dreams†is a suite for symphony orchestra in three movements. The work was kindly commissioned by Dr. Luis VÃquez, conductor of the University of Rhode Island’s Symphony Orchestra and to whom this work is being dedicated alongside with his wife Melissa. The titles of the movements come from either an specific dream, or other topics about dreaming that I discovered in the process of writing the work. I. Cherry trees in the morningNature has always inspired me. Every year during spring my family has the tradition to visit the Brooklyn Botanic Garden to experience the cherry blossoms. I usually do not remember many of my dreams but in this particular dream I was in Japan under an esplanade of cherry trees. I remember how amazed I feel and is for sure one of my most memorable dreams. II. DreamcatcherWhile I was writing the initial ideas of for the work I came across a Journal that explored how the use of a particular chord helped reduce nightmares in patients suffering from nightmare disorders. In the study, patients were exposed to the chord C69 (A C Major with the added 6th and 9th) during therapeutic sessions. This chord is used at the beginning of the movement as it moves to explore different sonorities. In this movement you might be able to hear a representation of the “heartbeat†played by the bass drum and timpani, then a more “stressful†section will come to represent a nightmare followed again by another repetition of the C69 chord. If you feel relaxed during the performance, it is on purpose! III. A Dance in the desertDreams, in my case, are usually a mix of different non-related things. For the final movement, I decided to use that idea. I started this dance with a “oriental†style and them throughout the middle of the movement I moved it to a waltz that was influenced by my grandfather. He used to have a small orchestra and he used to play waltzes during events and private parties.I hope the music takes you through a journey of musical emotions.Juan Guerra González

A couple or a few years ago during the Pandemic, there was a Discord Server vs Server Competition going on, and one of the online virtual group communities out of all the other servers took part in a theme called Dreams. When the event started, I immediately started composing this beautiful composition, and chose the instrumentation for Uncommon Woodwinds (Alto Flute, English Horn, and Sopranino Sax), Strings, Harp, and Crotales. However, my submission entry didn't make it to the final Dreams EP as expected. But the admins of the online orchestra group told me that I can still host it as a community project, and it just so happens that I actually did do that, and I've gotten a good amount of submissions from the members themselves, went through all the mixing and editing, etc, before releasing the final performance.This piece is meant to be described about dreaming to a wonderful place you might've remembered, and haven't forgotten in a long time, experiencing the deja vu moments of what you think might've happened long time ago, hence the title, of course.

Sweetwater Brass Press #707372. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1104138).      Howard W. Petrie was a composer of popular music active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. One of his most popular songs was “I Don’t Want to Play in Your Yard,†published early in his career, 1894. The song underwent a revival in the mid-1950s when Peggy Lee recorded it. It also figured prominently in the popular 1981 film Reds. Lyrics are credited to Philip Wingate, and his first verse sets up the story. Two little girls were next-door neighbors and best of friends. One day, however, a quarrel arose and “hot tears were shared.†One announced, “You can’t play in our yard.†The reply of the other forms the familiar chorus: I don't want to play in your yard, I don't like you any more, You'll be sorry when you see me sliding down our cellar door, You can't holler down our rain-barrel, you can't climb our apple tree, I don't want to play in your yard, if you won't be good to me.      The second verse tells of the reconciliation. The two girls miss each other. They kiss and make up and remain friends “all thro’ life.†But “in sweet dreams of childhood†we still remember the controversy of the yard.      This version features the group's Trumpets somewhat taking the roles of the two little girls. It retains the F major key in which it was written, changes tempo four times (in addition to a few rallentando/a tempo instructions) and includes two short, rather simple cadenzas, one for each Trumpet. It starts (rather incongruously!) with the eight 4/4 measures of “Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary†then transitions to ¾ for the remainder of the piece.      Trumpets predominate with melody and lead. However Horn and Trombone do occasionally come to the fore to provide introductions, call-and-response figures and recapitulations. Both Trumpets play a few notes above their staff—G# and A—but for the most part, all instruments perform within their normal playing range. Performance time is about three and a half minutes to perform.      Completed in 2022, performance time runs about 3 minutes, 34 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge. I Dreamt I Dwelt in Marble Halls – a lovely arrangement of the popular aria by Michael Balfe from his operatta 'The Bohemian Girl'The Bohemian Girl is an Irish Romantic opera composed by Michael William Balfe with a libretto by Alfred Bunn. The plot is loosely based on a Miguel de Cervantes' tale, La gitanilla. The best-known aria from the piece is I Dreamt I Dwelt in Marble Halls in which the main character, Arline, describes her vague memories of her childhood of a nobler upbringing having been kidknapped by Gypsy's as a very young girl. The best-known version of the operatta is undoubtedly the 1936 full-length Laurel and Hardy film, described in the opening credits as A Comedy Version of The Bohemian Girl. Old Beggarman- Two interwoven jigs, It Was an Old Beggarman, Weary and Wet and Ag an mBóithrÃn Buà (At the Yellow Little Road), of both a young lady's observation of a wandering beggarman and his unrequited, possibly unexpressed, love for her. They are offered together as alternate perspectives from potential romantic partners, and features lilting, mouth music, or portaireacht bhéil (port a'bhéil, mouth-singing) as it is known in Irish Gaelic.II. I Would Rock My Child to Sleep- A sentimental Irish lullaby Irish lullaby Do Chuirfinnse Féin Mo Leanbh a Chodladh (I Would Put My Own Child to Sleep) highlights the shifting roles of a caregiver: the parent full of hopes of the parent for the child morphing over a lifetime into a blessing from the grown child to the aged parent. Each verse is progressively based upon an overall narrative: 1. hopes of the parent for the child 2. an easy, natural rhythm to family life, possibly the child is older now, and there is a dream of family continuance 3. uncertainty over who is nurturing who: does the child now sing to comfort the parent? 4. a closing blessing for peace and rest that hearkens back to the successful sleep of a tired infant III.
