The composition starts in a fairly small composition in which, with the help of crescendos and several instruments, it works towards a strong, but above all open and cheerful part. This is followed by a short untuned percussion solo. After this, theme A is closed in a calm, non-violent manner. Immediately theme B comes in which is built up through crescendos and multiple instruments over time. Theme B also comes to a quiet end afterwards. After this theme A and B return at the same time, which builds up and closes in a grandiose way.NL:Deze compositie is geschreven voor één van de onderdelen van het D examen van Frits Renting. Het uitgangsdoel van de compositie was: filmmuziek. Geïnspireerd door bekende werken van Hans Zimmer, Brian Tyler, John Williams en werken van De Efteling. Fits really well on the oboe! Carl Bohm Carl Bohm, sometimes spelled with a K as in Karl Bohm, was born in 1844 and died in 1920. Bohm was a German composer, pianist, and songwriter. He was famous for writing songs with a light and optimistic atmosphere. Some of his most famous songs are Calm as the Night, Twilight, May Bells, Enfant Cheri, and The Fountain. In addition to his songs, he was a very popular composer of string quartets and string trios. His music was very popular and profitable. His publisher used some of the profits from sales of Bohm’s work to prepare the works of Johannes Brahms for publication. Output He certainly was prolific, not only with individual compositions but collections and albums of original music, such as the Bohm Album for the Pianoforte. The quality of his melodies is remarkable. They have a familiar quality similar to folk-songs. It’s no wonder they have become so popular.  His greatest masterpiece may well be the famous Calm as the Night as it is so well finished and refined. This song comes to us from a collection known simply as Lieder Op. 326. Calm as the Night (Still wie die Nacht) is listed as Number 27 in the collection. The song is scored for vocal duet and piano. The lyrics for Bohm’s Still wie die Nacht are anonymous. Lyrics: Still wie die Nacht Und tief wie das Meer, Soll deine Liebe sein! Wenn du mich liebst, So wie ich dich, Will ich dein eigen sein. Published by Chorister's Guild - Digital (C7.CGB1239). “Whoever believes in me, as scripture has said, ‘rivers of living water will flow from within them.’ This passage from John, chapter 7, illustrates faith in the wonderfully descriptive imagery of a small brook, trickling gently along its stony, wooded path. Gradually it becomes deeper and more active as it flows into a stream, then finally into a vital, rushing river. In this original composition for 3 or 5 octaves, handbells describe the scenario, starting with a simple melody surrounded by quiet randomly malleted bells, followed by a gently flowing section of moving LV bass underneath the treble melody. Gradually, the music develops into a strong, churning section of LV sixteenth notes, the melody above becoming more and more complex. As the piece draws to a close, it returns to the calmer, gentler sounds of the beginning. Living Water is a creative and thoughtful interpretation of the passage from John, and is appropriate in concert or worship when the focus is on faith and belief.

Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q771471). My 3rd String Quartet is in six contrasted movements. Certain musical figures recur across the work, but there are few themes as such. The main emphasis is on contrast of mood, texture, harmony, pacing and timing. Unlike many of my works this quartet had no extra-musical inspiration, and in principle should have no subtitle. Certain features already present in my music became more prominent in this new work: modes (limited collections of pitches) have always helped me to focus musical character, but here a sense of key note for each mode became much more pronounced, as did the difference between modes for each section of the work. A sort of hybrid key-system emerged (even with equivalents of major and minor) which is not normal tonality, nor does it aim to imitate it. Unlike tonality this key-system includes noises, extended performance techniques and intervals outside Western tuning as available resources. What I hope it does is to focus the listening experience onto different musical areas, to encourage a sense of both modulation from one area to another and to give the music a sense of goal. No conscious knowledge of this is needed when listening: the music should communicate directly on its own.Here, then, is this collection of six musical colours, related and unrelated, different yet belonging together, variable yet in a set order. Hence the subtitle, chosen both for both its sound and its sense: ‘hana no hanataba’ meaning, in Japanese, ‘bouquet of flowers’.A brief description:1)Moderately fast. Short droplets of sounds gather increasing momentum. 2)Very fast. Canons and bells at different speeds.3)Very slow – fast – very slow – very fast – very slow. The main slow movement and its main scherzo. An emphasis on non-tempered tunings and on inhaling and exhaling waves of sound. The slow sections feature florid melodic writing. In the exuberant scherzo competing duos and trios create imaginary folk music.4)Extremely fast/extremely slow. Open strings and harmonics fuse into a single string instrument – like a sort of large resonating Medieval tromba marina.5)Very fast. A variation on movement 2). Variation, Schoenberg told Cage, is just a sort of repetition ‘with some things changed and others not.’6)Slow - Very Fast - Fast – Slow. The opening calm harmonies and florid melodies evoke movement 3) in different music. The fast part features one overt theme: a fanfare-like call to attention which is subject to extensive development. There is much use of non-Western tuning. At its climax the music freezes into a frieze – a wall of sound standing in front of the audience with increasing obstinacy and certainty as the work grinds towards its cadence.

Every day I was commuting from Skurup to Båstad and every day I was struck by Båstads almost continental beauty; I felt like I was in France. Cobble stone roads, houses with towers and that mountain ridge close to the ocean...One day on the train, I ran into three French girls on holiday.Patiently they listened to my ideas and kindly helped me translate the tempo markings to French. The piece begins with us falling to sleep. The marimbas rocks us slowly In Dream.After sudden movements in the vibraphone we are happily strolling on the cobble stones, sun shining and children riding their bikes across the streets not noticing the rocky ride.Bells chime in the distance and the world – or the dream – vanish. As sudden as it started it is gone.The dissonance of the beginning is now gone and our sleep is peaceful and calm - or is it..? Originally a solo piece for Marimba dedicated to Kasper Grøn.Thanks to Camille, Carole, Raphaëlle for the help with the French.

Exploring slurs, accents, dynamics, caesuras, ritardandos and more, you'll be shocked by how sophisticated this beautiful piece sounds while using only a limited number of notes. Written to convey the playful innocence of a child dreaming, In Your Slumber balances the calm of a starry sky with the imagination and adventure of a child's mind at rest. Simple and elegant, the lullaby played by the flutes in the beginning gives way to an imaginative variation on the theme by the trumpets and clarinets at B. Gentle, pulsating tenutos in the harmonizing chords underneath are symbolic of relaxed, rhythmic breathing underlying the musical thoughts flowing by above them. Just as in dreams we seldom have control of which direction the story may go, D takes us somewhere else musically and implies a build to a false climax. At E, we are greeted with the quiet sounds of the night once more, but this time our imagination runs wild as the music builds to the climax of the piece at F. This powerful proclamation of the melody is concluded with a gentle final statement in the flute and clarinet, and the piece concludes with the final twinkle of the stars as the sun rises for a new day.Full of imagination, beauty and teachable moments throughout, I hope that you and your students can enjoy and appreciate this piece for it's simple beauty as I do. Onward!~Aaron FonziREHEARSAL NOTES:1. The clarinet part should be a very light drone creating atmosphere at the beginning- the same goes for the clarinet and saxophone at rehearsal E.2. It's easy to get too loud too soon in this piece, so remind your students to have patience. F is the climax of the piece, but many young students will want to play C as if it is. Similarly, be sure to balance the trumpet/ clarinet and the flute/ oboe/ bells at C so both lines come out evenly.3. Take your time in measure 48- we want to naturally fade away and pause before going on at rehearsal E. This increase and decrease in energy is a characterization of the ebb and flow of the piece.4. At F, there are 3 important parts that must be balanced: flute/oboe/bells; trumpet/clarinet; alto saxophone/horn. For best results, balance these 3 parts, and encourage the alto/horn line to play out a bit more than they think they need to. They are the new part which must be heard here.5. Have fun and use your imagination in terms of expressing the music- ask your students what it makes them think of and create a story to go along with it. Let this ultimately guide your interpretation. I am consistently impressed with the creative ideas my students come up with, so let them decide how the music should sound with their own stories. In your slumber, anything is possible!

The composition starts in a fairly small composition in which, with the help of crescendos and several instruments, it works towards a strong, but above all open and cheerful part. This is followed by a short untuned percussion solo. After this, theme A is closed in a calm, non-violent manner. Immediately theme B comes in which is built up through crescendos and multiple instruments over time. Theme B also comes to a quiet end afterwards. After this theme A and B return at the same time, which builds up and closes in a grandiose way.NL:Deze compositie is geschreven voor één van de onderdelen van het D examen van Frits Renting.
