Thomas Oboe Lee #5648535. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869648). I met Deok Yong Kim as a member of the Nico Quartet at the New England Conservatory of Music, in Boston, Massachusetts. I saw her on two occasions performing in Jordan Hall: once as the soloist in a Shostakovich Cello Concerto in Jordan Hall with Hugh Wolff and the NEC Philharmonic and then in an Honors String Quartet concert with Nico in Jordan Hall. Both concerts were in the spring of 2019, and they were fantastic. I was so impressed with her and her quartet that I wrote a string quartet for them that summer, NICO. They recorded it for me @ NEC in the fall and I love the recording. The next thing I did was to write a violin sonata for Minami Yoshida, the first violinist of Nico. It is called Mi-la-mi, after her name. Then I wrote this work for Claire, Kim’s American name. When I asked her what was the meaning of 803 in her email address, she said that is the street number of her apartment in Korea. So, that is how the title Trio 803 came about. Trio 803 (2020) is in five movements. 1. Adagio, Andante moderato 2. Adagio 3. Allegro con moto, TRIO 4. Adagio 5. Vivace, TRIO Enjoy!

Trio for violin, viola and piano in E minor is an arrangement of the String Trio, op. 32, a Neo-classical, cyclical, half serious, half tongue in cheek composition. The movements: Andante-Allegro vivace (nostalgic and dramatic), Andante con moto (a slow fugue), and Allegro scherzoso (treated in humorous variations; note the Minore variation, a well fit fugato on Henry Mancini's famous Pink Panther theme). Program note: I first met Minami Yoshida when I hired her and her colleagues in the Nico Quartet for a recording session of my Missa Pro Defunctis (2018) in the Eben Jordan Studio at the New England Conservatory of Music and then I heard her at an Honors String Quartet concert with Nico in Jordan Hall. Both events were in the spring of 2019 and she and the quartet were fantastic. I was so impressed with her and her quartet that I wrote a string quartet for them that summer, NICO. Intervallic Structure (Andante con moto) II. Tone and Color (Meno mosso) III. Urban Rhythm (Allegro ma non troppo) Based upon a strict and unvarying formula of patterns that are passed equally between the three violin parts, all three movements utilize this same precise structure of A, B, C, and Ostinato phrases. Each movement, however, while based upon the same formulaic set of patterns, vary by the material of the four phrases themselves; the phrases’ material is each based upon very different scales, depending on the particular movement’s character. Counterpoint Invariable is a successful thought-experiment, turned to driving and evocative emotional artwork, highlighting Wallin Huff's ongoing fascination with the logic of mechanical structure giving way to outward beauty. It is a true, fulfilling reward to perform and explore this work in its entirety.

Published by Colin Bayliss (A0.938424). The work was completed on February 2nd 1970 and is the first piece to be retained by the composer after he had destroyed all his earlier compositions. The parts are available as a separate download. The following is taken from the catalogue of the composer's works:- The photocopy of the MS is marked String Quartet No. 1, but is not regarded by the composer as part of his mature string quartet writing. The MS itself was lost in a fire at the home of Col. Robert Tong, formerly Registrar of Queen Mary College, University of London. A typesetting was made in November 2000 as the photocopy had faded so badly. The composer's sketch books suggest that the movements were written in the order 3,2,4,1. 1. Allegro 2. Scherzo (Allegro energico) Trio I - tempo di menuetto Trio II - no tempo indicated - [andante] 3. Andante con moto 4. Allegro ma non troppo Composer's note:- As the above suggests, I originally had no intention of publishing this early piece. The recording by the Lochrian String Quartet of the six numbered quartets, however , together with sleeve notes admitting the existence of this work, prompted me into revising my opinion and allowing its publication, so that anyone wishing to study this first effort may do so. It shows certain traits that I was to develop in the six quartets and others that I was to discard, and therefore is of musicological interest. It also has a few good, albeit imitative, tunes! Duration: Approx. 25 mins. COLIN BAYLISS was born in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire in 1948. His life-long love of music led him to compose from an early age and he now has a catalogue of over a hundred works including two operas, four symphonies, six string quartets and many other pieces for most instrumental and chamber groupings, over seventy of them published. He is a member of the British Academy of Composers and Songwriters, the North West Composers' Association and the Performing Rights Society. As well as writing music himself, he has also compiled annotated catalogues of the works of Anthony Hedges and Sir Peter Maxwell Davies. CDs of his piano music played by David Martin and complete organ music played by Ronald Frost are available on the New Century Classics label. Piano Quartet in F major in neoclassical style, loosely following the general outline of the Baroque sonata and the rhythmical patterns of the Baroque suite. A little manifesto for melody and striving for serenity, as opposed to the esthetics of avant-garde music. After the shock of the first harsh chord, the first movement (Andante molto sostenuto, un poco maestoso) wipes away all tension, in search for a renewed serenity, making use of allemande rhythmic patterns. The second movement (Allegro moderato), a scherzo-sonata form with courante rhythmic formulas and two trios, follows without a break.The third movement (Andante con moto e cantabile) is the emotional core of the composition, starting restrained and sad, with Romanian influences and a sarabande rhythm, but followed miraculously by a grand, ecstatic section.The Finale is a developed, expansive rondo (Allegro non troppo) with subtle Romanian influences, making use of bourrée and gavotte rhythms, plus minuet and gigue in the exalted coda.
