P, R, and N refer to types of harmonic progression within Hugo Riemann’s theoretical system. Starting from a given triad, P moves to the parallel major/minor triad, R goes to the relative major/minor triad, and N, if the previous chord was major goes to the minor subdominant and, if minor, goes to the major dominant. These relationships are exploited as the fundamental harmonic and melodic building blocks of the piece. Rhythmically, the PRN is regarded alphabetically. P is the 16th letter of the alphabet, R the 18th, and N the 14th letter. The distance from P to R is two letters and the distance from R to N is five letters. Taken with the difference between the two relationships (three), these are used to determine rhythm metric and proportional fashions. PRN also refers to the medical term pro re nata, or take as needed. The range of a typical soprano psaltery is two octaves beginning with the G above middle C (G4). However, since some soprano psalteries have fewer than 25 strings, the range used in this book is less than 2 octaves. Also, the notes are written an octave lower on the staff to avoid the ledger line notes that would be required to notate the upper notes. Thus, the notated range in this book is from A3 (A below middle C) to D5 (the second D above middle C).For each song, there is a combined score (grand staff, 3-stave) with both parts (PSALTERY and PIANO) on each page, plus 2 options for the 1-staff solo part (one with lyrics, one with alphabetic note names). This three movement composition is a musical portrait of Delaware up until its being the first state to ratify the constitution. It was composed for the University of Delaware Wind Ensemble, Dr. Robert J. Steckfuss, conductor as a result of a commission from the Xi Mu Chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. The work is in three movements: I. Stewards of the Land - This movement is a tribute to the Lenni Lenape Indians. It uses a melody from a Lenape Indian song that is first stated in the English Horn. This melody is then developed through adding counterpoint, harmony, orchestration, motivic variation, rhythmic and tempo changes, and the addition of original material. II. Settlement and Conflict - This movement reflects the European settlement of Delaware and the conflict with the indians. It begins with slow section representing serenity. A faster section using a melody from a Dutch dans represents the first European settlement in Delaware. A minor version of the dans combined with fragments of the Lenape Indian song from the first movement represents the conflict. This is followed by a return to the serenity section. A final fast section introduces a setting of the Swedish melody from Amerikabrev, representing the first permanent settlement in Delaware by Sweden. The movement ends with a section of Rule Britannia representing the colony falling under British rule. III. Forging A Nation - This movement portrays events leading towards being the first state to ratify the constitution. The movement begins with a section reflecting the anxious times of declaring independence, fighting for freedom, and forging a new government. The second section builds in confidence. After a slower section of reflection, the movement ends triumphantly in celebration of a new country.

This is one of two duets that Leguerney wrote for Geneviève Touraine and her brother, the famous French baritone Gérard Souzay. It was completed on 21 January 1950. The first performance, with Souzay and Touraine, was 21 June 1950 in the Parisian Salle Gaveau with Jacqueline Robin (Bonneau) at the piano. Previously unpublished, De l’abîme profond, was first recorded by soprano Danielle Borst and baritone Philippe Huttenlocher with Mary Dibbern at the piano. This was for the CD 50-9618, 28 Mélodies issued by Claves Records-Radio Suisse Romande: Espace 2 in 1996. The recording was recognized with the Grand Prix du Disque de l’Académie Charles Cros. The US premiere performance was by soprano Jill Pearon and baritone David Pittman-Jennings, accompanied by Mary Dibbern, during a recital at the Crane School of Music, SUNY-Potsdam, New York, 23 October 2007. The vocal range for the soprano line is C1-G#2 and for the baritone line is B-F1. The text’s poet, Jean de La Céppède (1550-1622), was born in Marseille and spent most of his life working as a lawyer and magistrate in Aix–en–Provence. His principal work, Théorèmes, consists of 515 sonnets dealing with the life of Jesus Christ and the “sacred mysteries of our redemption.†La Céppède’s poem is a translation of a psalm by David from the Old Testament of the Bible. Leguerney also set a psalm of David for medium voice and chamber orchestra, which was premiered by Gérard Souzay in 1954. This orchestral Psaume LXII de David is also published by Musik Fabrik. When the Reed sisters, Elizabeth & Lydia, asked me to write a new work for two pianos, I wasn't quite sure where or how to begin. Then I came upon a book on numerology by Annemarie Schimmel, The Mystery of Numbers. In it I discovered a lot of fascinating things, mystical and magical, associated with each number from one to 10,000. Since I would be writing a piece for a duo, double digits would do the trick. Number 22 stood out. It has two important associations: the Hebrew alphabet has 22 letters, and there are 22 major arcana cards or allegories of the Tarot. Perfect! I could write 22 pieces, each a musical rendering of a card. And, coincidentally, this work will opus 66.For pictorial inspiration, I bought a Pierpont Morgan Library copy of the Visconti-Sforza Tarot Cards from 15th century Italy. For musical inspiration, I listened to the wonderful salon music of the Polish composer Frederic Chopin, the American composer Louis Moreau Gottschalk, and the Brazilian composer Ernesto Nazareth.The 22 pieces in the Visconti-Sforza Tarot Cards are: Zero Il Matto The Fool entertains the gathered guests with a tarantella. I. Il Saltimbanco The Mountebank shuffles his cards and does a samba. II. La Papessa The High Priestess concocts a magic potion. III. L'Imperatrice The Empress dances all night. IV. L'Imperatore The Emperor promenades into the Great Hall and inspects the courtiers. V. Il Papa The Pope makes a proclamation that all sinners will be pardoned. VI. L'Amore Love in a tropical paradise. VII. Il Carro Triumphant in battle, the gladiators ride into town on chariots. VIII. La Giustizia Justice is swift and unrelenting. IX. Il Vecchio The Old Man reminisces. X. La Ruota della Fortuna Fortunes rise and fall unpredictably. XI. La Fortezza Strength and fortitude will prevail. XII. Il Penduto Lamentation for the Hanged Man. XIII. Il Morte Death lurks around the corner. XIV. La Temperanza Temperance in A major. XV. Il Diavolo The Devil seduces with his charm and wit. XVI. La Torre The tower topples and crashes onto the populace gathered below. XVII. La Stella Twinkle, twinkle, little star ... XVIII. La Luna Minuet for moonstruck lovers. XIX Il Sole Sunshine, margaritas and salsa cubana. XX Il Giudizio On the Day of Judgment, the angels blow their trumpets ... XXI. Il Mondo The world would be a happier place if we all dance together.
