These arrangements are formatted in the traditional five-finger style with the melody split between the hands and without key signatures.  All 20 songs are written in Middle C Position where all notes are played singly centered around Middle C (diagrams are provided showing notes and finger placement). No fingering is notated on the sheet music to encourage students to learn to read the notes instead of using the fingering numbers to play the song. Thus, this collection makes a great sight-reading book, especially if some of the songs are unfamiliar. Some songs require playing the B-flat note in the left hand or the F-sharp note in the right hand. For the few songs that use one of these two black notes, the flats or sharps are displayed beside the note on the staff, not in the key signature (special diagrams are provided showing finger placement for the sharps and flats used).These arrangements are perfect for introducing classic Christian songs to beginning pianists. This mixed level, 1 piano, 4-hands duet arrangement of the cheerful hymn tune HAPPY LAND is designed for a beginning student to play the PRIMO while an intermediate player (teacher, parent, friend, sibling) plays the SECONDO. All notes in the PRIMO are played singly with the hands in one position centered around middle C and then played one octave higher. The PRIMO can also be played as a solo when played as written. Lyrics are included on the PRIMO for sing-along enjoyment.The first verse speaks about the saints singing as described in Revelation 7:9-10. This upbeat, cheerful arrangement echoes the joy that will be experienced when the prophecies of Revelation are fulfilled and sin and death are no more. What a joyous day that will be when in heaven with Jesus we will sing Worthy is our Savior King! The last phrase of the song uses the word aye which may be unfamiliar to many. Jörg Widmann, an internationally sought-after soloist and professor of clarinet at the Freiburg Musikhochschule, displays the exquisite refinement of contemporary clarinet sound in 'Fünf Bruchstücke' (already published) for clarinet and piano (KLB 54) and in the present 'Fantasie' for solo clarinet. While noise, as a means of expression, is given much attention in 'Fünf Bruchstücke', 'Fantasie' is largely based on the usual Romantic melodious sound, though this time with ironic side trips into dance, klezmer and jazz music, the clarinet's equivalent of light music. 'Fantasie' for solo clarinet is my first real piece for my own instrument, the clarinet. With its eccentric virtuosity and its cheerful, ironic fundamental character, it reflects the experience with Stravinsky's 3 Pieces for solo clarinet of 1919 and the tonal innovations which did not appear in music before Carl Maria von Weber's notation for the clarinet, and takes them further in a new way. It is a little imaginary scene uniting the dialogues of different people in close proximity in the spirit of the commedia dell'arte. - Jörg Widmann ...on the interpretation: It would be important to take the title completely literally – which is why the performer should of course play the piece with imagination. The most important information on the structure: the complete absence of bar lines – whenever the piece is played to me by students or other persons, I am always pleased about the player's own ideas and about the fact that the musical text is taken literally and seriously, with all its dynamic and articulation marks, and yet filled with life and imagination. What I always notice, however, is that the rhythmic fast pulse part is often played like an étude, rather than with imagination. What is most important to me, personally, is to take pleasure in making tonal distinctions, even despite the strict timing. Have you ever had a dog that was a special, loyal friend? Well, Buster was a black and white pomeranian that will always have a special spot in my family's hearts. He loved to play football with the kids, and he loved to take walks with me. After we had to put him to sleep, I woke up around 1:00 a.m. one morning and wrote this song in memory of Buster. Buster's Walk is a cheerful little piece in 3/4 time, full of rich chords and a haunting melody. It is in the key of F Major, includes some grace notes, arpeggiated chords, lots of helpful fingering, and resembles music from the early 1900's. (I always picture Charlie Chaplin). This makes a great recital piece, or part of your Assisted Living entertainment repertoire. Every time I play Buster's Walk, I can still see him walking beside me with that perky, little smiling face; I hope you can picture him, too. Copyright 2007 Amy J. Snyder.

Hey fiddlers, One thing we know about old Scottish folk tunes is they never grow old, and even though we may never know who first wrote the delightful melody, “The Corrie Man,†we can tell from its lilting qualities—with its cheerful and spirited flow—that it brings to us images of the u-shaped valleys that are so familiar to the highlands of Scotland. We can easily imagine playing this traditional session tune among the rolling hills and farmlands of Scotland where musicians gather in their favorite places to play—near a tree or brook, on a farmhouse porch, in a sitting room or even in the kitchen.  Not to mention the casual setting of a pub where friends gather to raise a pint and sit in a big circle with an array of other fiddlers and musicians, playing tunes side-by-side enjoying each other’s company! With this backdrop our cellist Genevieve dedicated her time to arrange this artful reel for string quartet as part of our debut album, after which she had the wonderful opportunity to visit Scotland to study and perform with Alisdair Fraser and Natalie Haas, who inspired her to be a part of the rich tradition of preserving and performing Scottish folk music.We hope you will find that same inspiration while playing this piece with your friends and colleagues as much as we do.  It’s always a favorite showstopper!Slà inte Mhath (Cheers)ATLYS.

Many people have recorded it over the years but perhaps the most successful was Al Jolson's version. My arrangement is in a bouncy stride piano style as perhaps many of the early jazz pianists would have performed it. It's a bit of a tricky arrangement, especially the left hand. Pianists with small hands could easily leave out the tenths and just play either octaves or single bass notes. I include chord symbols which I always find helpful in learning new tunes but I don't include any fingering, pedal or dynamics which I prefer to leave up to the individual pianist.

O Come, Divine Messiah! is a hymn by Abbé Simon-Joseph Pellegrin (1663-1745), a French poet, playwright, and librettist who collaborated with Jean-Philippe Rameau and other composers. In addition to stage plays and opera libretti, his works included two collections of carols, published in 1708 and 1711. Pellegrin’s text for this hymn communicates the longing for a Redeemer by a world enslaved in sin, and is therefore appropriate for the season of expectation and preparation that is Advent. The tune, however - a 16th-century French Noël - is sprightly and cheerful, making this anthem especially fitting for the third Sunday of Advent - Gaudete Sunday, which derives its name from the introit for the day, Rejoice (Gaudete) in the Lord always.

A new composition setting the words of Psalm 133 for three-part (SABar) choir and piano. This cheerful, perhaps even rather idealistic psalm expressing the joy of kindred dwelling in unity has long been used to give voice to a human longing for acceptance by others, whether in a family or a community. Its verses compare this familial unity to the tradition of pouring expensive ointment over the head of visitors. Far from our modern use of oil for lubrication, this is an ancient middle-eastern oil of welcome and washing and feeling part of a community. Dwelling in unity is also compared to cloudy mist which regularly descends on the heights of Mount Hermon in Zion, providing moisture to an otherwise arid land and enabling life across the whole country. This setting is unashamedly playful, popular and romantic, with verses adding a more mysterious, metaphorical quality to the piece, and bringing to expression the deep joy of living in harmony with others..., even if finding this is not always easy. The composition is ideal for use by a parish choir, employing relatively easy part singing with a supportive piano part.Psalm 133: Ecce quam bonum et quam iucundum, habitare fratres in unum. Behold, how good it is, how pleasant, for kindred to dwell in unity. It is like precious ointment upon the beard, running down upon the beard of Aaron; like the dew of Hermon, which falls upon the mountains of Zion. For there the Lord bestows his blessing: life for evermore.
