Therefore, 'Go Tell it on the Mountain' is a Christmas carol that celebrates the Nativity of Jesus, but sometimes refers implicitly to the civil rights struggle. All My Trials is a folk song which became popular during the social protest movements of the 1950s and 1960s. It's classified as a spiritual because of its biblical and religious imagery. Joan Baez suggested it began as a pre-Civil War era Southern American gospel song. It tells the story of a mother on her death bed, comforting her children. No matter how bleak the situation seemed, the struggle would soon end: Hush little baby, don't you cry, You know your mama's bound to die. Too late my brothers, too late, but never mind, All my trials Lord, soon be over. (included in Brenda Dillon's African American Collection)About the arranger: Brenda Dillon is best known for her contributions to the Recreational Music Making movement. She served on the RMM Committee that designed the RMM Track for MTNA's Pedagogy Saturday. She also presented group piano and RMM sessions throughout the U.S. In addition to serving as a teacher trainer, she has written extensive articles on both group piano and RMM teaching. The Gift to Sing is a poem by James Weldon Johnson (1871-1938) published in 1917. The central theme of the text is one of optimism and resilience, using the power of song – meaning, more broadly, art or any kind of artful, heightened expression – to overcome adversity. Although the poem can be interpreted broadly to pertain to any kind of struggle, it is likely that Johnson, as a civil-rights activist was alluding more specifically to the oppression African-Americans in the United States, a struggle that continues to this day, in 2020. I composed this setting in September of 2020, right after the Black Lives Matter protests that took place that summer, so current events played a role in this interpretation on my part as well. If one reads the poem as pertaining the continued struggle of African Americans, some passages may come across as ambiguous. For instance, I brood not over the broken past should not be taken as suggesting that the horrors of the past should be forgotten, but as an injunction that the memory of these horrors should not discourage us or diminish our resolve to work toward overcoming the injustices. The musical inspiration for the opening of the piece comes from the song Lonesome Valley, which starts with a pentatonic melodic gesture. The pentatonic scale is often used in African American Spirituals, Christian hymns, and folksongs (e.g., Swing Low, Sweet Chariot, Amazing Grace, How Can I Keep from Singing?, Red River Valley, Oh Shenandoah). The more rhythmic parts take inspiration from the African-American spiritual tradition, as found for instance in the choral music of Moses Hogan (1957-2003). Meanwhile, the tenor solo at the end, is intended to be very loud, bright, and without the pronounced vibrato one would find in a Western operatic style. This kind of bright and intense vocal sound is not unfamiliar to most listeners, who may have encountered it in places as varied as Sacred Harp singing, the opening of the Lion King soundtrack, or the Muslim call to prayer.

THE COST OF LOVING is a contemporary protest/folk song, written for alto or high tenor voice and guitar. The song is from the 2022 musical KIKI starring the Scottish chanteuse Christine Bovill. The show was set in 1920's Paris, about the relationship between the artist and muse, the extrordinary Kiki de Montparnasse and her lover, the American photographer Man Ray. The score  comprises 12 original songs by the songwriting team Brooks & King.In 1924 Man Ray produced an image of Kiki, titled Le violon d'Ingres. On May 14th 2022 this work, considered by many as the prime example of Surrealist photography, was sold at Christie's in New York for the staggering $12.4 million, making history as the most expensive photograph ever sold at auction.

This piece is one of an album of my contemporary classical compositions. Yes, I too wince at offering you something saddled with this oxymoron--contemporary classical--but this phrase is now an irresistible, commercially recognized category defying any principled protest from the ranks of wounded musicological curmudgeons like me. The style here employs a tonal palette that celebrates the more or less common practice of composers from J. S. Bach to Ravel, Prokofiev, and the 20th century American songbook. You will see that I reject Arnold Schoenberg's assertion that by 1910 tonality had exhausted itself, and needed to be reinvented according to an aesthetics that dismiss our scales and harmonies as purely arbitrary human conventions with no basis in nature. On the contrary, I believe that we are endowed by our nature to respond emotionally to our traditional materials of music in the same way as nature equips us to respond to the taste of food and drink. We differ in our taste for savory, sweet, and sour, but it is wrong to say that our very capacity to taste is a merely cultural convention. There is biology, and then physics too! By the same standard, it can't be true that one person's taste for arsenic is as valid as another's taste for beer or kumquats. The major triad is a force of nature, like the sun, wind, and rain! I also like big fat juicy 13 chords, and contrapuntal weaving of melody! I believe the purpose of music is to sway us emotionally, and if it can uplift us too, so much the better! While I am not ashamed to write a bare triad, unadorned by chromatic alterations (much less by clusters of chord collisions) I have nevertheless employed much complicated harmony. Moreover, some passages are written in a spiky harmony that might be analyzed as bitonal, as at the meno mosso section, beginning at measure 112, where the mood I wanted to set inspired me to write the theme in C minor while the left hand climbs up from the bottom of the keyboard in a widely spaced, D-flat 13 arpeggio. I have composed these pieces with the skills of intermediate to early-advanced pianists in mind. This piece demands the ability to play some counterpoint between two voices in one hand. There is a section that requires one to play moderately fast octaves, but nothing as difficult as the G minor Prelude of Chopin (to say nothing of his harrowing octave Etude from Opus 25!) While there are many polyrhythmic passages, none is more complicated than two-against-three notes. All said, there is nothing here to make your hands (or, I dare say, your ears) bleed. The performing time is around nine minutes and a breath or three. No More Auction Block originated in Canada before the US Civil War among African-Americans who had escaped slavery and found safe haven there. It was later adopted by black troops in the Union Army. It is a song of determination and hope, although its positive message is tempered by the wistful line that closes each verse--many thousand gone. Those many thousand were not only the many who had escaped slavery, but also those who had been separated from family and loved ones by being sold on the auction block. This is a low-voice adaptation of an arrangement written for tenor Larry D. Hylton, who sang with Moses Hogan and with the Metropolitan Opera Chorus, and who has been in over 350 performances of Porgy and Bess. David Neff and Larry Hylton collaborated on recording this remotely during the 2020 pandemic in order to produce music for their church's celebration of Juneteenth, following the widespread protests over the murder of George Floyd. The song is appropriate for any occasion that celebrates African-American history and music, as well as the ideals of freedom and liberty.
