Published by Thinkling Music (A0.1145980).      AEROS is a one-movement piece about flying.      The composition begins with Latin dance rhythms and a clearly defined melodic motif. The threads gradually build to a tumble of ecstatic exuberance, engaging but short-lived. The remainder of the piece is a return to the mundane, ultimately settling on a plateau of stability which the listener senses to be merely a steppingstone, a pause before resuming the journey into an uncertain future …      Structurally, the work is a single movement built around an Afro-Cuban montuno pattern, with ostinati divided among the instruments. Stylistically it could be considered as “moody minimalist with a melodyâ€. Or if that is too long and unwieldy, then perhaps just “MMMMUSIC!â€Â      First performance in Laguna Beach, California on September 21st, 2021, by West Coast Wind Quintet, as part of the Sunset Serenades series. The outdoor venue, a small amphitheater in beautiful Heisler Park, high on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, was the perfect aerie from which to bring this piece into the world.

Perhaps the best-known portion of the 90-minute piece is the lyrical chorus “Save the Child.†This beautiful SAB arrangement features a nice soprano solo. It asks the question: “Do we live in a world with an uncertain future where a man is unsure of his fate? Will we come to our senses, be fair to each other? Can we turn it around before it's too late?†The question is answered: “We have come to our senses. We are part of each other and we'll carry the day for we must save the child.â€.

Sometimes it’s hard to distinguish between illusion and reality, and, in fact, often people much prefer illusion to reality. Mv. 1 - Illusion starts out with an obscure time signature and is constantly shifting tonalities so for a while, you aren’t quite sure where you are. Life is full of such deceptions.Mv. 2 - Fill the Wine Cup is a series of drinking songs with a lot of gayety and rollocking humour as the party gets more raucous, but eventually things get a little blurry and bombastic and the party winds down. The trombone, due to its ability to imitate drunken reeling with glissandos, is often cast in this role. M. 3 - Destiny seems to march on and on, with mankind hoping to control their future, but the implication is that fate is more powerful than one can control.M. 4 - The ultimate illusion: a Political Debate. The trombone starts out as the first candidate, and the saxophone is the other. The music is circus-like as befits many heated debates.Illusion was commissioned by Lucas Kaspar and JD Little.
