Higher Ground (I'm pressing on the upward way) is a 19th-century American gospel song with lyrics by Johnson Oatman, Jr. (1856-1922) and music by Charles Hutchinson Gabriel (1856-1932).Both Oatman and Gabriel were prolific writers. Oatman, an ordained Methodist Episcopal minister employed primarily in retail and insurance work, is said to have written over 5,000 hymns and songs in the latter 30-some years of his life.  Although not a talented singer nor recognized as an outstanding preacher, he was acknowledged to have ministered to countless souls through the words of his hymns and songs.Gabriel, a Methodist Episcopal church music director and editor of gospel song books, anthem collections, music instruction manuals, and more, is said to have written between seven and eight thousand texts and/or tunes under his own name and several pseudonyms. In addition to the music for Higher Ground, he composed the music for such well-known gospel songs as His Eye is on the Sparrow and Will the Circle Be Unbroken? The opening line of Oatman’s text (I'm pressing on the upward way) draws especially from Philippians 3:13-14: “Forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.†Other sources include passages from the prophets Isaiah and Micah and the Psalms of Ascent (120-134). Gabriel's music cleverly evokes the upward vision of the text with an ascending arpeggio spanning an octave on the first words of the refrain (Lord, lift me up) and the matching of the highest notes of the tune to the words a higher plane.This arrangement for brass quintet expands the meter of the tune from 3/4 to 4/4 to allow for some countermelodic call-and-response by various voices in the ensemble. Published by Chris Cooke (A0.865253). 50 Favorite Hymns for Solo and Duet Instruments is a sequel to the first book, Hymns for Solo and Duet Instruments. This second collection contains my all-time favorites and is written for early-mid-intermediate players. The hymns are written so that instruments can be mixed and matched for duet or ensemble purposes. Suitable for worship services, they can be played as offertories or special music selections, or as accompaniment to congregational singing. Many of the hymns are in the traditional hymnal keys, however, there are some that may be slightly lower to accommodate instrumental ranges. This tuba book contains only the melody of these hymns. One verse and chorus is written for each and can be repeated as needed. Hymns with a particular theme or key can be combined for a medley, e.g. I Love to Tell the Story, Oh How I Love Jesus, and He Keeps Me Singing-all are in A-flat. Melody and duet parts are available for flute/oboe, clarinet/trumpet, alto sax, French horn, and trombone/baritone/bassoon. When necessary, parts occasionally cross for ease of playing for the bass instruments. A piano accompaniment book is also available. These accompaniments are eclectic in style and span the gamut from classical to gospel. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808697).   Henry Alford (1810–1871), Church of England cleric and man of many talents, wrote the words for Come, Ye Thankful People, Come in 1844. Fourteen years later, Alford’s hymn was set to a melody composed by George J. Elvey (1816–1893). Elvey had named the tune St. George’s, Windsor after the chapel in Windsor, England, where he was organist. The first verse of the hymn rejoices in the harvest and calls for celebrants to Come to God's own temple, come; raise the song of harvest home! As such, the hymn gained popularity in the United States as a celebration of Thanksgiving.  In keeping with the song’s celebratory and triumphal nature, this arrangement uses a fanfare as the recurring motif. The fanfare opens the piece, followed by a rejoicing, exultant first statement of the melody. In the second statement, the fanfare figure returns and forms the structure for the section. The third statement is styled as a kind of rondo; the fourth and last, grandioso. The fourth statement also changes key twice--F to B-flat, then to E-flat--includes a walking bass part and ends with, again, the fanfare. The piece should be played Allegro moderato, about 120 bpm, and there are no really tricky rhythmic figures. Most notes are well within the normal range of the five instruments-Trombone’s highest are a couple of high F notes; Trumpet 1, high A notes. So most players will have little or no trouble.   This arrangement was completed in 2019, and performance time runs about 3 minutes, 44 seconds. The words to the song were written by John Newton, an Englishman who was the captain of a slave ship. After a huge storm at sea, his ship began to sink and he called out to God for help. The cargo in the hold shifted and blocked more water from entering the hull. By the time his ship drifted back to land, he had become an evangelical Christian, and from then on, gave up drinking, gambling and profanity. It was during his later life as an Anglican cleric that he wrote these words.

It was originally composed for SATB with parts for a sizeable orchestra. It lasts for about seven minutes. The work was dedicated ‘To the music students of Morley College’. Apparently it was extremely well-received and had a further presentation on 18 February at a music students’ ‘Tea and Social’ event. A number of well-known carols are used in this ‘fantasy.’ Throughout the piece, the composer makes use of ‘God rest you merry gentlemen,’ ‘The First Nowell’ and a traditional melody derived from Brittany used to set the words ‘Come ye lofty; come ye lonely.’ The Duration is approx. 6.16 minutes and the level is Advanced Intermediate.

Sweetwater Brass Press #3689775. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808686). This is one of the most beautifully arranged short pieces in the Sweetwater Brass Press catalog. Jean-Paul-Égide Martini wrote Plaisir d'amour in 1784. He took the words from a poem that appears in Célestine, a short novel by Jean-Pierre Claris de Florian. The poem begins, Plaisir d'amour ne dure qu'un moment (The pleasure of love lasts only a moment). Over the years, Martini’s melody has proved popular with other composers, including Hector Berlioz and Louis van Waefelghem. Two relatively recent songs that made use of the plaintiff refrain are the Christian hymn, My God Loves Me and the song Can't Help Falling in Love, which was performed by Elvis Presley in the film, Blue Hawaii. This arrangement is not technically difficult, but it does require discipline and interpretation. As in the original, there are two key changes, F to A-flat and then back to F. The time signature has been changed from Martini’s 6/8 to ¾ but retains all relative note values. Trumpet 1 plays the melody with occasional harmony from Trumpet 2. Horn in F provides arpeggio accompaniment throughout most of the song, with some help from Tuba and Trombone. With respect to high and low notes: Trumpet 1 has one A5 grace note (to a G5 quarter note); Trumpet 2 has three above-staff quarter notes in a row, A5, B5 and A5; Trombone has one F4; and Tuba has a number of F1 notes and one section of octave jumps involving F2 to F3 and A2 to A3. This arrangement was completed in 2018, and performance time runs about 3 minutes, 51 seconds.
