I was chatting to my mom in South Africa yesterday, and she requested some new music for her upcoming birthday(preferably me singing another aria), but I woke up with this in my head early this morning and so I got to work. It reminded me a little of all the Chopin waltzes I played many moons ago, and it made me sad that he died at the young age of 39, so I decided to call it The Birthday Waltz. Chopin's music really shaped the way I hear melody, and I love his body of work. And my mom has always been my biggest fan, coach and champion, so I hope she likes this piece, and I guess Ill go and record an aria for her now!!! ps I think this piece will be a great preparation for students who are eager to learn some Chopin Waltzes. It sounds harder than it is and I think it's fun to play (and even my husband loved hearing it all day). I hope you enjoy it too.

I started writing what would become One Sows for the Benefit of Another Age in 2013, as I was sketching ideas for what became a piano trio. I liked what I had created, but two things became evident: The piece was destined to be for orchestra, and I was not good enough as a composer to finish it. Over the next seven years, I kept returning to this piece in my spare time, adding some sections, tweaking some others, and at some point I gained the experience to finish it. But the trade-off was that I no longer had the time. At least until Spring of 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic put most of my projects on hold, and I was able to return to--and finish--the work.The title came last. My ideas while I was writing centered around Americana (I was listening to a lot of Copland, Barber, and Ives) and infusing my history and experience in the Ozarks and on the plains. I knew I wanted to make use of the idea of illumination, of dawn. I wanted to start in the shadows and end aglow. The darkness was such a defining feature that my working title was Aegri Somnia, loosely translated from Latin as troubled dreams. As I continued working, I realized that the focus wasn't the darkness--the focus was the change.I discuss change a lot in my teaching. Students often see change as transformative change--massive, radical, sweeping change, like winning the lottery, or winning an audition. Transformative change is easy--it usually involves hoping for a situation or a Deus ex Machina, and if it happens, it benefits us immediately. Iterative change, however--small, repeated, incremental change that builds up over time--is hard. An extra half-hour of work every day, a little extra contributed to savings every month, these changes add up over time and become significant. But it requires intention and action, and it doesn't reap immediate benefits. It may not end up benefitting us at all.One Sows changes iteratively. It starts from a dark place, but is sprinkled with seeds of hope. A descending motive introduced in the violins brings us out of the darkness, albeit slowly. The idea spreads, develops, and eventually becomes part of a new idea, a new paradigm, that takes over.In searching for a title, I came across Serit ut alteri saeclo prosit, North Dakota's Latin state motto, whose English translation is the title of this work. It's a recent addition to the North Dakota statutes, but a timeless message. Our work isn't finished yet.

Joni Mitchell and Judy Collins were big inspirations for Sydney's songwriting. She was especially drawn to the deeply emotional lyrics in many of their songs.Cycles of Life, the title track from Sydney's current release, was composed for her late step dad. The song is about the cycle of birth and death: Cycles of life go on, yet we carry all that we've known and loved through the ages. Time, another track on Sydney's current release, is a song about how time passes more quickly when we are doing something we cherish. Brian's Song, inspired by the loss of her father-in-law, reflects: All that really matters is the way we fill our heart, and the ways that it has loved. Dawn, a track from Sydney's album Seasons, is a beautiful piano-based instrumental with light string background. It portrays that very peaceful hour as the sun slowly lights up the world -- the hour of dawn.Sydney is a poet. The title Three Sacred Songs: was given to these pieces rather than the more usual terms anthem or motet because of the strongly secular presence in the texts. The songs were written over a period of some eighteen months. The Shepherd Lad was finished on February 29, 2008. The Round Day and Magdalene’s Song were completed in Brooklyn on June 11, 2009, the music having been originally sketched-out on Christmas Day and Boxing Day 2008, at Putnam Valley, New York. In the first song, The Round Day, the singer hears the voice of the Blessed Virgin Mary as she sings to the glory of God throughout the day. The text was written on June 7, 2008. In The Shepherd Lad, the Spanish mystic Saint John of the Cross describes a shepherd lad’s (Jesus’s) love for a shepherdess (the Church) and how another (the Devil) tempted his love away. Heartbroken, the shepherd climbed a tree, “And threw wide his arms in sweetest charity, Since by His Shepherdess He was forsaken.†The original Spanish text was translated and adapted into Villanelle form by the composer in early December 2004. The text of Magdalene’s Song describes the feelings of a mystic, or a devotee of Jesus, inspired by the fresh beauty, grace and power of the Lord of creation. The main body of the text is given to a soprano solo. The text was written on April 27, 2008. These sacred songs were conceived as being performed either as a set or individually. The composer had secular ensembles in mind, such as college or concert choruses, but these songs may, of course, also be performed in a liturgical setting. The accompanying flute provides introductions, interludes and codas throughout the set and, on a few occasions, plays with the voices. The piano part is ad lib. (optional).
