The lyrics were written by Rinkart in 1636, the melody by Cruger in 1647, and the popular harmony by Mendlessohn in 1840.This arrangement begins with a Handelian keyboard introduction, modulates to the 1st Verse for Unison choir with a new homophonic reharmonization for accompaniment, then modulates to Verse 2 which is a softer Unison with a drone accompaniment and a voice solo antiphon, then a final modulation into Verse 3 which is Unison with optional traditional SATB hymn parts.Since it is in Choral Unison we have used it here in the National Cathedral for gathered massed choirs from around the country to celebrate the official Government Holiday of National Day of Thanksgiving. I am aware that one country has also used this piece as part of the Investiture Ceremony to install their new Bishop. The addition of the Psalm antiphons gives it a Nationalistic angle as well. Further, in some countries this hymn is also a tradition at Christian Weddings. In short...this piece is perfect for any moment of Thanksgiving!7 pages 4 minutes

The first, written in 1899 and published in 1902, is something like a ballet with songs and a speaking part for narrator. It was a failure on stage and is now forgotten. The second and much better known work is a piano rag based on some of the tunes in the stage show. This little piano rag is one of the genre’s most loved pieces and has been transcribed for many different ensembles. It has been used in many films, most notably in the 1973 movie The Sting.This arrangement is is for any saxophone solo with piano accompaniment and is in the original key. Parts for E flat (alto, baritone) and B flat (soprano, tenor) saxophones are included. What everyone always remembers about The Ragtime Dance is the moment when Joplin asks the performers to vigorously stomp the floor in rhythm! This is the stop-time feature mentioned in the subtitle.

They are among the most frequently played of Schubert's piano music and have been recorded many times. The Moments Musicaux are supreme examples of Schubert's ability to suggest the subtlest nuances of emotion, which shift and alter literally in a moment. The composition of the Moments was quite sporadic, with the third and sixth movements appearing in various collections of works compiled by publishers in 1823/24 and the complete collection appearing in 1828, the year of Schubert's death. The Moments Musicaux are short pieces, shorter than his Impromptus, and are collected under the opus number 94. They encompass various moods and moderate difficulty, showcasing Schubert's skill in touching different tonal areas within a single movement. Schubert's Moment Musicaux No. 3 is a significant and popular piece. It is described as energetic, playful, and lyrical. Do You Hear How Many You Are? for SATB choir was written in April and May of 2010. The origins of this piece and text come from a very interesting experience I had in December of 2009. I have been learning a lot in the past few years about the state of our world and the many huge problems and crises we are faced with in the near future, and this discovery has been so daunting and overwhelming to me. So much change needs to happen in order for the near and long-term future of our world to be just and stable that I have felt a lot of guilt over my choice of profession. Why have I chosen to be a composer and musician when I could make more of an impact on solving these problems if I were a scientist or policy maker etc.? I have been struggling to find a solution to this dilemma for a while now and I just happened to be thinking about it, while filled with lots of stress and worries, one night as I was falling asleep in December of 2009. At the moment when I was in that state halfway between sleep and consciousness, I suddenly heard the line Do you hear how many you are? in my head, yet I felt as though I didn't come up with the line but that it was said TO me. I was instantly comforted, as if a load fell off my shoulders, and then I began to hear it being sung, which I knew was the beginning of a choral piece. I woke up, wrote down the music I was hearing (about the first six measures of the work) and then wrote down this entire poem. I truly feel that this message came to me for a reason, and that I need to share it through the music I create. Didi – Didi was a very unique and special friend for many years. She gave out great spiritual strength and insight into this very confusing world in which we all live. She was a real tower of quiet, gentle strength.Movement 2. Brew! – This movement was inspired directly by the Brewing Industry. It strives to depict the hustle and bustle of a busy, working brewery and the the many hilarious, fabulous people I met during my three years in the beer-making industry.Movement 3 – Convent Cherub – This little piece began life as the opening title music of a film score I worked on while at college. The film itself, entitled My Brother Rob, was made by Alison Hilder, a student director at the Harrow School of Film. The story told of a young boy traumatised by a convent boarding school up-bringing. I have felt for many years that this little main theme has needed an alternative home, as much film music is never played again.Movement 4 – Megan – This movement comes directly from my wonderful and beautiful daughter, who was 5 years old at the time of the writing of this piece. It seeks to express her wild vibrance, eternal cheekiness, infinite energy, sparkle and the utter fearlessness of youth.Movement 5 – Edward – This music is for my gorgeous little son, who has Down’s Syndrome, and was only 3 at the time of the writing of this piece. The opening came to me moments after the doctor had confirmed Edward had Down’s, when he was only 6 hours old. The music tries to convey the fear of the unknown, huge unconditional love and moments of uncertainty alternated by washes of strength. And yet, all through the fear the resolve to forever love and stay strong always wins.Movement 6 – Indifference – The opening 4 notes are the core of this movement, and the piece is built around and from them. This music is an observation of deep, rumbling frustration at the indifference growing in our fast moving, modern society.Movement 7 – “Wee Us†– This movement expresses family triumph, the gifts of life and love, and the glory of boundless, wild, youthful energy. This tune has not yet run its course. It will be back!

If Not Now, When? gets its title from the novel by Primo Levi, the Italian author who both survived life in Auschwitz and fought the continued German military presence in Italy with the Resistance after the Italian surrender to the Allies in September 1943. Levi meant that revolution and the overthrow of tyranny should never be 'put off until tomorrow'. If you believe you are on the side of right, then 'seize the day'- tomorrow may be too late. The inspiration for INNW? grew from research I was doing into an early song by Alban Berg called An Leukon which Berg wrote in 1907 while a student of Arnold Schoenberg. In delving into the kind of world which Berg inhabited in the Vienna of 100 years ago, I was fascinated by the café culture* which played a pivotal role in the lives of most artists: not only composers, but also writers, painters, architects and journalists. They swirled around the fashionable 'watering holes' sucking up current thoughts and ideas, high on Viennese coffee, cigar smoke and idealism! I envisaged a play which tried to encapsulate all this and wrote a few scenes with characters such as Schoenberg, Berg, Webern, Steuermann, Pisk, Kraus, Gropius and Altenberg heatedly discussing music, art and poetry over large cups of milky coffee. This grew into the framework for INNW? which, to paraphrase Pirandello's play about characters seeking an author, is a 'play without words in several scenes'. The piece is organised into 8 short movements or 'scenes' showing the 'Schoenberg cirle' sharing their radical and daring ideas and the shock or delight (or both simultaneously) with which those ideas are greeted. The first, which happens to be the longest, is rooted in conventional tonality. It begins with a fanfare in D flat major ('aux armes, citoyens!'), then seeks a 'freer' tonality by means of the 'emancipation of the semitone' only to capitulate in the central section and, finally, to 'fall back to earth' by winding down in G sharp minor. These 'scenes' are not meant to represent particular composers. They are, however, meant to represent the kinds of directions in which music could progress, given the 'breakdown' or 'stretching to its limits' of traditional harmony which had occurred in the previous 10 to 20 years. So many ways forward were promulgated, with one after another extraordinary, and often unexpected, futuristic musical panoramas glimpsed momentarily. My aim is to demonstrate which directions they decided they could head in having cleared the 'overgrown' path before them. * I even discovered that, around this time, in the Café Central, a certain Leon (Lev) Bronstein, otherwise known as Leon Trotsky, banished by the Okhrana (Imperial secrect police) from his native Russia, would spend all day in a back room playing chess. How delicious, I thought, if Schoenberg had ever brushed passed Trotsky or, indeed, had ever spoken to him: the one planning political and the other musical revolution!

Premiered in Luxembourg, in December 2010, conducted by Dimosthenis Dimitrakoulakos.Program Notes:This piece is named for Yemanya (pronounced Yeh-MAHN-jah or Yeh-MAHN-jee), the Brazilian/African nurturing mother goddess of the ocean. She's known as a protector, supplier, and one who grants wishes. Every December 31st, Brazilians celebrate Yemanya by casting white flowers and miniature boats into the sea. If Yemanya grants your wish, her waves will swallow the boat and if she denies the wish the boat will wash up on shore. Yemanya teaches us to dive in at the very moment of golden opportunity, to enjoy the rhythms of life, and to allow all doubts to be washed away. The fluid, oceanic themes of the instruments represent the flow of the water and magic of Yemanya. The piece starts off with a soft wind chime accompanied by gong/tam-tam. Then the vibraphone enters mysteriously as the main theme that drives the whole piece as it subtly changes. The double bass creates a rhythmic pulse beneath the other sections. The gentle melodies in the flute dance around jazzy articulations in the trumpets and saxophones. There's an interplay of Afro-Cuban beats in the marimba and a bossa nova rhythm between the temple blocks and xylophone. Throughout the piece I have tried to capture the water's motion and the ever-changing face of the sea. As the vibraphone returns to the original melody, we are reminded of Yemanya's eternal beauty and peaceful nature.
