The quintet covers most of the original wind and brass parts while the piano mostly covers the strings. This is very effective in chamber music recitals (as a companion piece to the Poulenc Sextuor, for instance) or vocal recitals (adding many more of the original colours as opposed to a simple piano accompaniment). The level of difficulty is aspiring intermediate to advanced. The set contains a full score, quintet parts and a vocal score (small staves for quintet, regular size staves for voice and piano).

It is a very beautiful work based on romantic harmonies accompanying a lyrical solo line, here passed around equally between the members of the quintet. The level of difficulty is intermediate-advanced. There are a few tricky spots in each instrument, most of which can be worked around with stylistic rubato (if necessary). Given the scarcity of gorgeous slower works for brass quintet, this is a great addition to the repertoire.

It is definitely not for the faint-hearted, but great fun for an advanced quintet (with technique to spare). This arrangement for woodwind quintet of the famous Grieg incidental music to Peer Gynt op.23 strings together many of the famous themes into a 13-minute medley. The themes appear in chronological order: - At the wedding - The abduction of the bride; Ingrid’s lament - In the hall of the Mountain King - The death of Ase - Morning mood - Peer Gynt’s homecoming. Stormy evening on the sea - Solveign sings in the hut Sections are clearly marked so cuts are possible and easy to do. It is also possible to play individual sections on their own. The level of difficulty is aspiring intermediate to advanced - the arrangement is meant to rival the orchestral suites in excitement and colours (but in a more organic/continuous format).

One of the most beautiful, fully romantic works for mixed chamber ensemble (oboe, horn and piano), Carl Reinecke’s Trio in A minor op. 188 is here arranged for woodwind quintet. The oboe and horn parts are the same as the original (with an attempt at unifying articulation and dynamics), while the rest of the quintet covers the piano part. This works surprisingly well, with the result sounding as if it had always been conceived for this combination (well… almost – the flute part gets a thorough workout in the low range which is not entirely characteristic). Featuring oboe and horn, but giving every instrument plenty to do and moments to shine, this is a fantastic addition to the romantic woodwind quintet repertoire – which, besides the usual suspects, is surprisingly scarce. The level of difficulty is just above advanced intermediate – the low flute part, some tricky rhythmic passages (especially for the clarinet) and overall ensemble considerations make this a challenge, but a very, very rewarding one, for an advanced quintet.

Published by Armin Terzer (A0.942157). In a twist of fate, Beethoven’s String Quintet op.4, which is based on the Wind Octet in E flat major op.103, is here re-arranged for wind quintet. The arrangement contains all four movements in their entirety: I. Allegro con brio II. Andante III. Menuetto piu Allegretto – Trio I – Trio II IV. Finale: Presto Indicative tempo markings are provided. Total running time is 30+ minutes (but individual movements, especially the first, may be performed on their own). This arrangement is a great addition to the classical/romantic repertoire for wind quintet – its original instrumentation for wind octet really shows in the beautiful and idiosyncratic, but also virtuoso lines for every instrument. This is a workout for all players – the level is advanced.

Published by Armin Terzer (A0.942160). This is an arrangement for solo trumpet and symphonic wind band of the complete Haydn trumpet concerto. The band parts are mostly of intermediate difficulty (with some strong players needed in the clarinets) and many alternate options are provided to cover missing instruments (see notes on first page) – the piece can effectively be performed with 4 flutes, 2 horns, 2 trumpets and a full clarinet section (minimum 8 plus 1 bass clarinet). On the other hand, a larger band, if kept within reasonable limits, allows the soloist to play freely and without getting covered. Only the low brass gets a rest to stay within the character of the original work.

This arrangement is meant to rival the orchestral suites in excitement and colours - but in a more organic/continuous format. It is ideal for any level orchestra (intermediate+) in any kind of setting.

This is a reduction of the Prelude to Act 3 and Bridal Chorus of Wagner's Lohengrin from triple winds to double winds:3333 - 4331 - 4perc, harp - str to 2222 - 4231 - 3perc, harp - str (3rd trumpet optional). The horn and trumpet parts are transposed throughout (horn in F and trumpets in B flat), and an alternate ending is provided for just the the Prelude to Act 3 (making it possible to perform the set without the Bridal Chorus needing a choir). The Bridal Choir has the stage band integrated into the orchestra. Vocal parts are not included.
