This unusual piece by Eugene Gigout is simplistic and complex, plain and colourful, in other words as we say in the Uk '... its bit like Marmite!' ie. you either like it or you don't! Fugal in style and very melodic with a modern feel harmonically. And I like Marmite!! Gigout was born in Nancy in France and became a pupil Saint-Saens. He mainly wrote for the Organ, his Toccata is still played today and very popular as an encore piece. He was also Organist at the St Augustin Church in Paris for 62 years!

Cécile Louise Stéphanie Chaminade (8 August 1857 – 13 April 1944) was a French composer and pianist. Born in Paris, she studied at first with her mother, then with Félix Le Couppey on piano, Marie Gabrie Augustin Savard, Martin Pierre Marsick on violin, and Benjamin Godard in music composition, but not officially, since her father disapproved of her musical education. Her teacher, Benjamin Goddard gave her an assignment to complete, a ballet symphonique, Callirhoë, Op. 37 (1888) that enjoyed many performances which added to its success. Movements from this work were extracted and fashioned for solo piano, namely Pas des écharpes, (Scarf Dance) and Pas des amphores, (Amphora Dance), both of which became popular staples of the piano repertory. This arrangement written in 2014 is playable by either SATB or AATB saxophone quartet. The original key has been changed to a more saxophone-friendly key. Published by Daniel S. Augustine (A0.837244). Blue Skirt Waltz was originally written by Vaclav Blaha (1901-1959), a Bohemian trumpet player and composer. The song’s original name was Cervenou Sukynka (Red Skirt Waltz). He recorded the song in 1944 as an instrumental (although there are Czech lyrics). In the late 1940s, Frankie Yankovic was reviewing a catalog of Bohemian music and liked the song, but thought that it needed lyrics. He asked the well-known lyricist Mitchell Parish (of Stardust and Sleighride fame) to write new lyrics, and Parish did so, changing the color of the skirt from red to blue. In 1949 Frankie Yankovic and His Yanks recorded Blue Skirt Waltz and it reached #22 in the Country charts. Columbia Records eventually sold 2,500,000+ copies of the recording, and it is estimated that over 4,000,000 recordings by all musical groups have been sold. This arrangement is intended for a small German or polka band, but the instrumentation is flexible: 2 Clarinets, Alto Sax, Tenor Sax (doubling Euphonium), 2 Trumpets, Eb Alto/Tenor Horn (plus Horn in F), Trombone, Euphonium (both bass and treble clef), String Bass, Tuba, Accordion (or Piano), and Drums. Intermediate level. Duration: about 2’45.
