In the region of the Latin American Andes, more precisely the tableau called ayacuchano is an art form very representative of the folklore of the region. Taking this idea of micro-stories, the work narrates four scenes of a day that begins at dawn and ends with the town's festival. Each story corresponds to the four sections of the music, which are performed successively. First tableau: Autumn morning lights. The change of season is perceived in the ashen morning lights of the autumn season, the sun rises lightly with a slight warmth, giving the ochre color that dominates the landscape a sense of tranquility and reflectiveness. The mood of this piece is one of contemplation. Second tableau: Noon in the town The tableau opens. It is midday. The whole town is busy with preparations for the harvest festival celebration. The music goes by with the sounds of the town and the joy of the inhabitants for the important festivity they are about to share as a community. The whole town is a great hustle and bustle. You hear barrel organs, feel the excitement of hanging banners and decorating the houses for the main parade. Third tableau. Little song for siesta time. A nostalgic voice sings an old folk song to lull the children to sleep. The voices of other adults of the town intertwine to sing a song to the sleeping children. It is a tender song that recovers the stillness and tranquility of the town at the hour when everyone returns to their homes to rest. Fourth tableau: Night of celebration. Harvest Festival The first chords of the town band can be heard in the distance, a melody invites to enter with enthusiasm to the place where the festival will take place. The dance begins, the band plays energetically and everyone participates in a dance of joy. In the most important moment of the party, the town's hymn is played, everyone joins in one voice to sing the song that distinguishes them. And now: the announcement of the winners of the harvest contest. Someone is honored and everyone applauds vigorously. Then the dancing continues again. The drama was based on an extremely touching story about a lady named Doue E, and was written by the author Guan Hanqing during the Yuan Dynasty. It is divided into three sections in a cyclic form, with one theme. The instrumentation includes voices for male and female, suona (Chinese cornet), there are more than ten traditional Chinese percussions are used, such as the wind gong, large and small luo (as used in Beijing opera), and the Chinese clapper, Paiban. The sound of suona indicates the lady Dou E with her battle cry and strong faith. The music begins after lady Dou E’s faint narrative. ※The Lament of Tou-Ehr was commissioned by the Neo Classical Music Group. The dance was arranged by Fon-xuei Liu, with orchestra and chorus conducted by the composer, Shui-long Ma himself. With its plaintive oboe solo over sometimes dissonant harmonies, the autumnal slow first movement pays homage to Mahler, echoing for instance Das Lied von der Erde. In the second movement, the mood shifts to a java, a popular dance akin to a fast waltz that flourished in France between 1920 and 1960. Remaining in the minor, this movement’s circus-like levity also conveys the grittier side of mid-century Parisian nightlife. Rather inconspicuously, the java incorporates in the piano accompaniment four measures from Rachmaninoff’s Prelude in G minor (Op. 23 No. 5), ironically subverting the aristocratic march into the fold of the plebeian dance. Thus, the second movement also constitutes a nod to Mahler, who famously used klezmer music as a disruption in his First Symphony.

With its debut in 1908 on Broadway in New York City, this pop standard from the Vaudeville show Ziegfried's Follies has been covered by such artists as Liza Minelli, Bing Crosby, and as late as 2017, by Indie folk singer Mree (Marie Hsiao).Shine on Harvest Moon also has a long association with Hollywood films such as Shine on Harvest Moon (1932 animation), a Roy Rogers' western, Pennies from Heaven, and the British comedy show Shine on Harvey Moon. Â The song and dance duo of Laurel and Hardy also used the song.
