Schubert: Ave Maria for Alto Flute & Piano
Flute and Piano
Flute,Piano - Level 1 - Digital Download SKU: A0.548688 Composed by Franz Schubert.…

Flute,Piano - Level 1 - Digital Download SKU: A0.548688 Composed by Franz Schubert. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Christmas,Easter,Standards. Score and part. 4 pages. Jmsgu3 #3411123. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.548688). An Alto Flute Christmas/Easter classic! Duration: 4:55 Score: 3 pg. Alto Flute part: 1 pg. Piano reads from the score. Schubert seems to have composed this piece as a song-setting. This is because he wanted to portray a poignant emotional event from a poem. The poem was Walter Scott's The Lady of the Lake. Consequently, this song became an integral part of Schubert's Song cycle. Therefore the cycle is called: the Lady of the Lake. In the poem, Ellen Douglas is the Lady of the Lake. The lake is probably Loch Katrine in the Scottish Highlands. First of all, Ellen goes with her father to stay in the Goblin's cave. They go because he earlier refused to join in a rebellion against King James. Roderick Dhu, the chief of the rebellious Alpine Clan, marches up the mountain with his army. But before the battle, he, first of all, hears Ellen singing. She is singing a prayer calling for help from the Virgin Mary. Schubert's piece was first performed at the castle of Countess Sophie Weissenwolff in Steyregg, Austria.  Schubert dedicated the arrangement to her, and as a result, she became famous as the lady of the lake. The incipit of Ellen's song is Ave Maria which is Latin for Hail Mary. It seems like this similarity led Schubert to adapt the melody to accommodate the Roman Catholic prayer Ave Maria. Consequently, the Latin version of Ave Maria finally became more famous than the original so that consequently many believe he wrote the Latin version first. Schubert Franz Schubert (1797–1828) was, in fact, a famous Austrian composer. Moreover, he composed during the late Classical and early Romantic periods. Schubert was comparatively prolific. He wrote more than 600 secular vocal works, seven symphonies, and, correspondingly, a massive amount of piano and chamber music. Critics agree, as a matter of fact, that his most famous works include his Piano Quintet in A major, D. 667 (also known as the Trout Quintet), the Symphony No. 8 in B minor, D. 759 (Unfinished Symphony), the last sonatas for piano (D. 958–960), and the song cycles Die schöne Müllerin (D. 795) and Winterreise (D. 911). Education Schubert was furthermore a musical child prodigy. He studied violin with his father as well as piano with his older brother. In addition, when Schubert was eleven he studied at Stadtkonvikt school, where he became familiar with the orchestral music of Haydn, Mozart, and likewise Beethoven. In due time he left school and returned home where he studied to become an educator; nevertheless, he continued studying composition with Antonio Salieri. Performance Eventually, Schubert was admitted to the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde as a performer. This appointment straightaway established his name in Vienna as a composer and pianist. Finally, he gave his only composition recital in 1828. He died suddenly a few months later probably due to typhoid fever. Legacy Schubert’s music was by and large underappreciated while he was alive. There were all in all only a few enthusiasts in Vienna. After he died, however, interest in his work in fact increased. Felix Mendelssohn, Robert Schumann, Franz Liszt, Johannes Brahms and other famous composers in due time discovered his compositions. Nowadays, historians rank Schubert expressly among the greatest composers of the era, and his music remains in general very popular.

Flute,Piano - Level 1 - Digital Download SKU: A0.548696 Composed by Franz Schubert. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Christmas,Easter,Standards. Score and part. 4 pages. Jmsgu3 #3411141. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.548696). A Flute Christmas/Easter classic! Duration: 4:55 Score: 3 pg. Flute part: 1 pg. Felix Mendelssohn, Robert Schumann, Franz Liszt, Johannes Brahms, and other famous composers in due time discovered his compositions. Nowadays, historians rank Schubert expressly among the greatest composers of the era, and his music remains in general very popular. Â

Flute Duet Flute - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.587360 Composed by Franz Schubert. Arranged by David McKeown. Praise & Worship,Romantic Period,Sacred,Wedding. Score. 5 pages. David McKeown #3210671. Published by David McKeown (A0.587360). Ave Maria was written by Franz Schubert in 1825 as the sixth song in his song cycle based on Walter Scott’s poem The Lady of the Lake. It is perhaps the best known of all his melodies, adapted for piano by Franz Liszt, and for orchestra many times since. It is often sung with the Latin lyrics of the Catholic hymn of the same name and has been heard everywhere from the Disney movie Fantasia to the funeral of J.F. Kennedy. This version is arranged as a duet for two Flutes. Musicians at an intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances. Both parts play the melody. The overall performance time is around four and a half minutes. The sample recording is from the Clarinet and Alto Saxophone version of this duet. The full length youtube performance is of the Clarinet version. Teachers will enjoy using this arrangement as a fun way to help with phrasing and expressive playing. The rhythms are straightforward though there are extended triplet quaver arpeggios which will pose a challenge for finger coordination and breathing. Flute,Piano - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549354 Composed by Bach-Gounod. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Christmas,Contemporary,Easter,Wedding. Score and part. 11 pages. Jmsgu3 #3490015. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549354). This arrangement follows the original Bach prelude and so excludes the extra measure that Schwencke introduced in 1783. If you prefer the extra measure, please see Bach-Gounod: Ave Maria, Schwencke version for Alto Flute & Piano, S0.661753. The convenient 1st & 2nd endings provide an option for extended performance with minimal page turns for the accompanist. The duration with repeat is about 4:50. Score: 6 pages. Solo part: 1 page, piano part: 4 pages. Based on Prelude #1 in C Major from the Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 1. Well suited for church meditations or school programs or recital encores. Ave Maria Ave Maria is a Catholic prayer that consequently asks for the mother of Jesus (Mary) to intercede. Charles Gounod composed a famous version of the Ave Maria. He was a French Romantic composer who overlaid a new melody on an existing Bach chord progression. The progression is from Bach’s Prelude No. 1 from Well-Tempered Clavier I. This version, as well as Schubert’s version, have become essential items at weddings, masses, and funerals. Bach Overview First of all, Johann Sebastian Bach is maybe the greatest composer in music history. Certainly, he was prolific. As a result, everyone has heard of his works. Furthermore, these works number well over a thousand. It seems like people are probably most familiar with instrumental works such as the Brandenburg Concertos, and the Goldberg Variations. But, similarly famous are such noteworthy works as the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Musical Offering, and the Art of Fugue. Seems like his most famous vocal works include the most noteworthy Mass in B Minor. Also, most noteworthy, though, are the St. John Passion, and certainly the Christmas Oratorio.  History Bach came from a long line of musicians and above all, composers. Consequently, he, first of all, pursued a career as a church organist. So as a result, he gained employment in various Protestant churches in Germany. For a while, he worked as a court musician in Weimar and Köthen. Here he probably developed his organ style and likewise his chamber music style. Eventually, he gained an appointment as Cantor of St. Thomas in Leipzig. Here he worked until difficulties with his employer ultimately drove him away. The King of Poland finally appointed him as court composer.  Style It seems like Bach created an engaging new international style. He synthesized elements of the most noteworthy European music ideas into his new style. Even more, this new style was probably his synthesis of European musical rhythm and form. Furthermore, he demonstrated a complete mastery of counterpoint and motivic development. His sense of harmonic organization probably propelled him to the top. Revival        Mendelssohn conducted a Bach revival in the nineteenth century. His effort probably helped to re-familiarize the public with the magnitude of Bach’s works. During this period, scholars published many noteworthy Bach biographies. Moreover, Wolfgang Schmieder published the BWV (Bach Werke Verzeichnis). As a result, this is now the official catalog of his entire artistic output. The BWV number allows us to locate a work in the catalog. Sometimes scholars will simply use an S (Schmieder) as an abbreviation for BWV. Â

Sometimes scholars will simply use an S (Schmieder) as an abbreviation for BWV.  Voyager NASA launched two Voyager spacecraft in 1977. Onboard are phonograph records with sounds, music, and images of life on Earth. The purpose of the launch was to inform intelligent extraterrestrial life forms about conditions on Earth. The music on the disc is varied. There is Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and Stravinsky among others. However, because Bach is so important in our music history, it contains three times more Bach than all the others combined.

Flute Duet Flute - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.811687 Composed by MICHEL BLAVET (1700 - 1768. Arranged by Edited by Pat Spence. Baroque,Concert,Instructional,Standards. Score. 17 pages. Piper Publications #3884077. Published by Piper Publications (A0.811687). This sonata ‘Pour deux Flutes transversieres sans Basse’ is the first of a set of six published by Boivin in Paris in 1728 as Blavet’s ‘Premier Oeuvre’. They were dedicated ‘a Son Altesse Serenissime Monsieigneur LE PRINCE DE CARIGNAN Par Mr. Blavet ordinaire de la musique de S. A. S.’ on the suitably elaborate title page. The sonata is written for two equal players and has 4 movements, Adagio, Allegro, Affetuoso & Allegro assai. Players of Intermediate ability and above will enjoy the interplay between the parts. The sonatas were printed using the soprano G clef which places the G on the bottom line of the treble staff, a practice which was not uncommon at the time. Blavet was not only the best flautist in France but also an extremely good bassoon player so would have found this clef easier to read from as he was not a keyboard player. This edition has been transcribed to the now established treble clef with G on the second line. Trills shown in the original as + are shown in this edition as tr. The breath marks in bar/measures 36, 39 & 41 in the final movement are Blavet’s. This is the first instance of his practice of marking the breaths which he developed in his opus 2 set of sonatas for flute and which has proved so useful to today’s performers of music of this period. Curiously Blavet used a flat (b) to cancel a sharp instead of a natural.

The Unquiet Grave from American Death Ballads (Downloadable)

High voice and piano - Moderately Difficult - Digital Download SKU: MQ.8454-2E Composed by David Conte. Secular, 21st century. Instrument part. 6 pages. E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital #8454-2E. Published by E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital (MQ.8454-2E). English.American Death Ballads was composed especially for tenor Brian Thorsett. We have been frequent collaborators since 2011, when he premiered the complete set of my Three Settings of W. B. Yeats for string quartet and tenor. At his urging, I transcribed and published my Three Poems of Christina Rossetti (originally for medium voice) for high voice, which he premiered at the San Francisco Conservatory in 2014. American Death Ballads was premiered by him at the San Francisco Conservatory, November 1, 2015, with pianist John Churchwell, and at the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Conference in Chicago, July 10, 2016, with pianist Warren Jones. The choice of texts for my American Death Ballads was inspired partly by Copland’s Old American Songs, which I deeply admire, but more by my dear friend and colleague the late Conrad Susa’s Two Murder Ballads. The ingenuity of Susa’s accompaniments for his ballads in imagining anew the original source material owes a great deal to Copland’s accompaniment for his songs. Though the content of my songs is completely original and not based on preexisting melodies, I have tried to expand on this further, as the texts are much longer, and go through many different moods and characters. The four texts I chose include stories about murder, death, and dying. Though two of the texts were written in England, they traveled to the colonies almost immediately. The subjects of the texts had spent time in America, and their stories were well known to Americans.Wicked Polly is a cautionary tale. Polly has lived a dissolute and immoral life, saying, 'I'll turn to God when I grow old.' Suddenly taken ill, she realizes that it is too late to repent. She dies in agony and is presumably sent to hell; young people are advised to heed. My musical setting is stately and preacherly in character for the narrator; for Polly it becomes pleading and remorseful. The Unquiet Grave was brought to the attention of Alan Lomax, the great American field collector of folk music, by English folk singer Shirley Collins. The text is taken from an English folk song dating from 1400. In The Unquiet Grave, a young man mourns his dead lover too fervently and prevents her from obtaining peace. The dead woman complains that his weeping is keeping her from peaceful rest. He begs a kiss; she tells him it would kill him. When he persists, wanting to join her in death, she explains that once they were both dead their hearts would simply decay, and that he should enjoy life while he has it. My setting is in a flowing Andante with a rocking accompaniment. Three voices are delineated here: the narrator, the mournful lover, and the dead lover speaking from the grave. The Dying Californian first appeared in the New England Diadem in 1854. Its lyrics are based on a letter from a New Englander’s sailor to his brother who is dying at sea while on the way to California to seek his fortune in the California gold fields. He implores his brother to impart his message to his father, mother, wife, and children. My setting opens with the singer alone in a moderate dirge tempo, then, joined by the piano, moves through many tonalities and moods before ending with supreme confidence as the speaker 'gained a port called Heaven/Where the gold will never rust.'Captain Kidd was a Scottish sailor who was tried and executed for piracy and murder in 1701. The American connection to this ballad is that Kidd escaped to America and for a time lived in New York and Boston, though he was a wanted criminal by the British authorities and was extradited to Britain, where he was hung at 'Executioner’s Dock.' The lyric was printed in Britain in 1701, traveling to the colonies almost immediately. Though the didactic tone of the text is similar to Wicked Polly, it expresses no regret until the final lines: 'Take warning now by me, and shun bad company, / Lest you come to hell with me, for I must die.' My setting is fast and spirited, expressing the confidence of a man who lived life as he wanted. -David Conte.

Flute, Woodwind Choir or Ensemble, Flute Choir - Advanced Intermediate - Digital Download By Avenged Sevenfold. Arranged by Lisa Ochoco. Score, Set of Parts. 31 pages. Published by Lisa Ochoco
Flute choir meets heavy metal!<br> <br> Avenged Sevenfold is one of my absolute favorite heavy metal bands. I don't usually hear a flute choir when I listen to their songs, or mostly any heavy metal songs for that matter, but A Little Piece of Heaven is so creative, so musical, and so funny, that I couldn't help it. Also, Oingo Boingo headed up the instrumental parts of the original song, which is evident.<br> <br> If you are unfamiliar with heavy metal, you don't need to know anything about this song, other than it's incredibly unique and has to be played with an attitude. Accentuate the down beats, lay off the full vibratos, keep pushing the tempo - it never should slow down, and channel your inner rocker.<br> <br> This song was the brainchild of the late James "The Rev" Sullivan. With the help of Oingo Boingo musicians, the song was scored to include an orchestra, full wind section, and choir. This arrangement is less than half the length of the original song, but it still clocks in at around 3 1/2 minutes.<br> <br> This arrangement is scored for 4 flutes, alto, bass, contrabass, and upright string bass or keyboard. It is essential that there is a strong bass line. The upright bass part could also be played by any bass clef C instrument, like a euphonium, trombone, or tuba. If you are lucky enough to know a drummer, that would help a great deal too. I did not include a drum part, only because I am not knowledgeable enough at writing for drums and would rather leave it out than mess it up!<br> <br> I hope you and your group will enjoy playing this song as much as I enjoyed arranging it. And I hope your audience will like it too!

Mozart: Ave Verum Corpus for Piano Quintet

Piano Quintet Piano - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.552099 Composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Classical,Instructional,Standards,Wedding. 12 pages. Jmsgu3 #6119421. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.552099). Mozart: Ave verum corpus K. 618 for PIANO QUINTET. This is a fantastic masterpiece of music written by one of the greatest composers in our history. This famous piece by Mozart was composed only six months before his untimely death in 1791. Mozart wrote this on commission while working on the Magic Flute. Program this for Lent or Easter meditations or any Christian communion service. Also, this would be a strong recital encore showing mastery of phrasing, tone quality, and dynamics.Ave verum corpusFirst, Mozart composed a most noteworthy motet in Latin, Ave verum corpus. This translates in English as Hail, the actual body. The motet is undoubtedly listed as K.618 in the Köchel Catalog. This is a chronological catalog of Mozart’s compositions consequently published by Ludwig von Köchel. Seems like Mozart probably composed this motet in the last year of his life. Likewise, he worked on his final opera, the Magic Flute, and his Requiem Mass at the time. Mozart wrote it for the feast of Corpus Christi. He scored it for SATB choir, string instruments, and a small organ. Hence, while the Requiem is a more dramatic work, the motet expresses even more the Eucharistic thoughts with relatively simple means, well-matched for the church choir in a small town.Early YearsWolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 – 1791) was a productive and significant Austrian classical composer. Mozart displayed unusual musical capability from his earliest childhood. It seems like he could already play the keyboard and violin at age two. He started composing at age five and performed before European royalty.Middle PeriodAt 17, Mozart was working as a musician at the Salzburg Royal Court but grew agitated from boredom and traveled to search for a more exciting job. While visiting Vienna in 1781, he was summarily dismissed from his Salzburg job. Nevertheless, he decided to stay in the Capital (Vienna), where he achieved much fame but little economic haven. Throughout his concluding years in the Capital, he composed many of his most famous works: symphonies, operas, and concertos.Final PeriodThe conditions surrounding his death have been the subject of much conjecture and mythology. He composed over 600 works, many recognized as high points of symphonic, chamber, concertante, choral, and operatic. He is among the most everlastingly famous classical composers, and his impact is substantial on succeeding Western art music.
