NOTE:The overall beat of this song is fairly moderate, but after verse one there are a lot of notes added in to match the wordy lyrics. It is a bit deceptive because it sounds like the pace really kicks up at verse 2, but in reality, the beat stays the same...there are just more strums. This works in the player's favor. For the most part, you can hold the same chord shape for many of these measures with your fingers and use your thumb to bounce around to grab the extra notes. Because of a few sixteenth note embellishments, I'm setting the suggested skill level at Intermediate to Upper Intermediate and above. However, if you enjoy this tune, it's a good one to stretch your abilities. (read below)This progressive rock classic is great fun to play. Use of power (barre) chord shapes in most measures really help to simplify finger positions. Once the chord shape is in place, other notes in the measure can be quickly flatpicked by just repositioning the thumb. Makes what sounds like a very challenging piece much easier to approach. If you're a Jethro Tull fan, you know that this is one of those songs that really sticks in your noggin. The old axiom, if you can sing it, you can play it holds true. Familiarity with the lyrics can help make this piece manageable for all levels of Intermediate player. It can be omitted by using a simple bend on the middle string during the intro and by playing on just the melody string during the chorus.This song should be within reach of all levels of Intermediate player. It uses common chords and most fingerings are not overly complex. The easy, relaxed beat also helps keep this an approchable piece. Additional / optional rhythm notes (in parenthesis) are included for more adventurous players. As Reggae rhythms are not commonly found in a lot of dulcimer music, getting this syncopation down might be the trickiest part. The old axiom, if you can sing it, you can play it, is especially true here. Listen to your favorite recording several times to help get the groove into your memory. Listen to this piece hereKids in the Corner is a piece especially composed for Thomas Smith, a family friend and former trumpeter, as a personal thank you for his generous donation to my “ Get Matt to Maryland†Rally via rally.org.With this work I aimed to explore some dance styles that don’t tend to be invited to other suites. I wanted to challenge myself with these various styles while infusing the quirkiness of Thomas into the heart of the piece.I. HipThis summer I was able to pass through New York City on my way to a graduate school audition. On the train ride there I ended up next to a kid who was grooving to music I could hear snippets of through his headphones. This movement reflects characteristics of the sounds I heard on my way into the city.II. One for the lovebirds…It’s time to cuddle up next to your partner and take a trip down memory lane. This movement is an ode to the slow songs one may have experienced from a dance in the 1950’s.III. SwungFor quite some time I have been intrigued with early instrumental dances and this movement explores their defining characteristics while hinting at this work’s overall structure.IV. Posh, Prim, and ProperThis axiomatic propinquity of the Minuet and Trio is a coruscating combination of tonal and temporal creation. A suite as brilliant as this is but an inchoate one without homage to music’s finest moment. It is propitious that I elucidated an exposition featuring a Bach cello suite with motives from the Brahms Requiem in fugal counterpoint set against themes by Mahler.V. JigA trumpet player I was performing with was warming up before a concert and cascading a peculiar series of long tones in to the hall. After he finished I approached him and asked him what he was playing. What he revealed to me was hilarious and this movement is homage to that occurrence.- Matthew NunesWindsor, December 2014.
