BWV 531, the Prelude and Fugue in C major, is an essential early organ work by Johann Sebastian Bach. Here are some key points about this composition:Composition and ContextIt was written around 1707 when Bach was in Arnstadt, making it one of his earlier organ works. It was composed during Bach's time as a church organist at the Neue Kirche (now called Bachkirche) in Arnstadt.Musical StructurePreludeIt opens with nine measures of solo pedals, featuring a recurring sixteenth-note figure and an unusual pedal trill. The manuals enter with a sixteenth-note figure in measure 10. It contains a 5-measure phrase of diatonic parallel sixths in the manuals with a pedal tone.
