After early studies with his father, the organist Charles Blanchet (1833–1900), and then with his mother, Marie Schnyder, an excellent pianist, Blanchet attended the Cologne Conservatory from the age of 18, where his teachers included Gustave Jensen for harmony and counterpoint, Friedrich Wilhelm Frankel and Seiss. In 1898 he left Cologne for Berlin, and subsequently Weimar, to study with Busoni, whose influence was to prove pivotal to Blanchet's future development. At 25 he made his début with the Berlin PO, after which he appeared throughout Germany and elsewhere, including a tour of Switzerland as accompanist to the violinist Henri Gerber. In 1905 he became director of the Lausanne Conservatoire, a position he relinquished in 1908 in order to concentrate more on teaching and composition. In 1909 he was awarded first prize for his Tema con variazioni for piano op.13 in a competition in Berlin. As a pianist, Blanchet's virtuoso technique was well suited to his chosen repertory, which was based primarily on the works of Beethoven, Liszt, Brahms and especially Chopin, in addition to those of Debussy, Ravel and Louis Vierne. His playing was particularly admired for its power and control and for the variety of colour and nuance he was able to achieve through a subtle pedal technique.

CeÌcile Chaminade (1857-1944) was born in Paris and began studying piano at an early age with her mother, she later studied violin and composition privately and became hugely popular in France, the UK and USA. She was the first female composer to receive the LeÌgion d’Honneur and often performed for Queen Victoria at Windsor Castle. Her US debut was with the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1908 where she performed her own Concertstück op. 40 for piano and orchestra. Despite the fact that most of her 400+ works were published during her lifetime her music fell into obscurity after her death; though in recent years there has been much renewed interest. Barcarolle was first published by Enoch & Cie, Paris in a collection of twelve short pieces called Album des Enfants vol. 1, op. 123. Many of the works in both volumes 1 and 2 have been on the syllabuses of the major music examination boards.

English • German.In the 19th Century the Paris Conservatoire was a veritable pool of talents. Here the French violinist Jean Delphin Alard also acquired his final musical polish. However, there was not much left for him to learn by then, for he had already performed a violin concerto by Viotti in his native Bayonne at the age of ten. Paganini, who subsequently heard him play, was astonished by his technical facility. Alard’s most celebrated pupil was Spanish violinist Pablo de Sarasate. Alard – like Bériot – provided us with concert pieces and tutorial material for the violin, and he was also happy to oblige the demand at Parisian salons for operatic fantasias and entertaining pieces such as this elegant Barcarolle op. 26/1. Plate no. 12030, published in 1852.

It has thirteen short continuous movements, one for each note of the tone row and a resolution of the row into an adagio movement in C major. The movements are written in a time signature beginning with one beat to a bar and ending in 13 beats to a bar until the final section of the last movement. The number of bars for each movement is in multiples of 13, then 14 and onwards to 25. The harmonic language is dictated by the combinations of notes in the original row combining with a row with its inversions and retrogrades begun from the first note of each new section. The sections may be briefly summarised as follows:- 1. Adagio A basic statement of the row with its inversion and retrograde 2. Con brio A rhythmic miniature scherzo and trio 3. Allegretto Dynamic contrasts using pizzicato and glissando 4. Andante piacevole e mesto Aduet between the violins with accompaniment from the viola and 'cello 5. Agitato An atmospheric spiccato section interrupted by foot-stamping 6. Andante languido A barcarolle-like section with passages of col legno 7. Allegro A rhythmic section contrasted by passages in harmonics 8. Tempo di tango presto The tango is apt to slip into many of the composer's pieces, even where nominally 12-tone, and is never remotely serious! 9. Andante pastorale Another atmospheric section but more relaxed 10. Allegro molto A scherzando section using rhythmic retrogrades 11. Allegretto The music begins to pull into feeling of tonality around C 12. Allegro moderato This process continues with tremolandi and glissandi searching for the way to a diatonic C major 13. I am a Singaporean pianist and composer. I have studied the piano since 5 years old under Mr Joseph Toh and I graduated from LASALLE College of the Arts with a Diploma in Music in 2013, majoring in Music Composition under Malaysian composer Mr Chong Kee Yong and Singaporean composer Mrs Joyce Koh Bee Tuan. About Six Preludes I started composing this set of Six Preludes for piano in 2014 and revised in 2020. The first piece of this set is Walking. There are different types of walks one can imagine. Octaves in the left hand at the opening represents walking sluggishly, whilst the middle section’s running right hand and jokingly bass notes representing a quick stroll. The Adagio recititavo part represents tip-toeing and finally the quasi cadenza part represents a trip on the floor, ouch! The second piece, which is nicknamed Joke, is a parody of Chopin’s Scherzo no. 1 in B minor, Op. 20. Take this piece as a lame unfunny joke, as in the slow coda, which is a sigh after listening to this joke. Night Song, as the name says, means a piece to be played at night, most commonly associate with pieces like Nocturnes, Barcarolles etc. The fourth piece, Chopin, is a homage to Chopin. I chose his Prelude in G and B flat minor, Op. 28 no. 3 and no. 16 respectively as sources of inspirations. Vision is a poly-tonality piece. Sometimes what we think or see, may not always end up the way it is. Hence, I hope to create this double effect by using the keys at the same time. The final piece of this set is a Fughetta. A fughetta is a small fugue. This piece is actually a piano transcription of the 3rd movement of my Three Colours (for Clarinet in B flat, Violin and Cello) which is composed and premiered in 2012. I revised and edited some sections. This is a 12-tone work. The P0 and R0 makes up the subject of this piece, while R11 makes up the countersubject. Six Preludes is dedicated to my friend Ng Yu Fei.

It is romantic in nature, but uses modes and has a few interesting harmonies.It is placed at intermediate level, about associated board grade 4/5 - dotted quaver semiquaver is the most complicated rhythm). The whole score is on the youtube link for you to assess suitability- It would be very suitable for concerts, contests, recitals, weddings as well as an incidental piece. There are 2 violin pages per part and the piano part has 6 pages- 5 minutes in length.Price is for score and parts.
