I joined in with them freely, until it was Spring, then I was off, like a hawk on the wing - searching for fortune - and something to sing. And it’s oh! But it’s been a long time! The pipers are proud in Kildare and Athy; there's no better music found under the sky. But, one bright Summer's evening, I left them behind; put my feet to the road and I followed them blind - searching for fortune - and what I might find. And it’s oh! But it’s been a long time! And I hope that we meet again soon. I saw her but once, by the light of the moon. She said she would give me a song with no tune. The fiddlers are famous from Bantry to Cork. The rake of their reels would make the lame walk. But still, at the close of a fine Autumn day, I packed up my bags and I went on my way - searching for fortune but finding low pay. And it’s oh! But it’s been a long time! And I hope that we meet again soon. I saw her but once, by the light of the moon. She said she would give me a song with no tune. Far up the west coast, in Aran and Clare, there's harpers to bring you a magical aire. I listened, enthralled, till the Winter came on, then pulled up my boots - and soon I was gone - searching for fortune for still I had none. And it’s oh! But it’s been a long time! And I hope that we meet again soon. I saw her but once, by the light of the moon. She said she would give me a song with no tune. I rested, by chance, at the close of the day, by a small rounded hill, where I happened to stray. And there, as the drowsiness over me stole, I dreamed of a woman with eyes black as coal - And the fortune she held was the song of my soul. And it’s oh! But it’s been a long time! This solo feature will undoubtedly be the most talked-about selection on your Winter concert! While the Twelve Days of Christmas has long been a Christmas holiday favorite, you’ve never heard it played like this before. Here is an opportunity for the musical AND comedic talents of one of your most advanced players to be featured! The soloist plays the role of an accomplished, yet most pretentious and self-aggrandizing soloist. The accompanying orchestra parts are not difficult, although a more advanced orchestra will be able to make even more of the light-hearted and occasionally dramatic accompaniment. A two-page outline of suggestions are also provided to help enhance the comedy, but you are invited to put your own comedic stamp on the performance. Early in the work, the soloist has a few very simple solo passages which he or she deftly and smugly executes flawlessly. As the music proceeds, the soloist is highlighted with several showy, but brief, cadenzas. The mood then changes and becomes melodramatic and sorrowful, perhaps requiring a stagehand to produce a handkerchief and dry the tears of the soloist (and perhaps the conductor). The work ultimately concludes in a joyful and spirited manner. Your audience will long remember Fantasy on the Twelve Days of Christmas. Arranged for Solo Cello with string orchestra, optional solo parts for viola and for violin are also provided.

A Week in November… and what a week it was! It was the week of the US Presidential Election 2020. As I write these words, the absurdist tantrums of the Trump-Pence campaign versus the reasoned compassion of team Biden-Harris continues even well after the results have been called in the Democrats’ favour. There will not be the usual respectful concession speech and transition of power. I worry every day about how these next few months will be so very difficult, maybe even dangerous, for my American friends. Those convoys of flag waving Trumpists gleefully, openly, encouraged by their ‘leader’, attempting to block the democratic process was horrifying to witness. Was America on the brink of civil war? It still doesn’t seem far fetched to think that as I sit in my studio on the other side of the world, feeling helpless. The only thing I felt that I could do for my friends over there was to offer them a way to feel safe and loved in the moment, a bit of musical mindfulness. It was in this spirit that I wrote the second movement of this work, subtitled A Pocket Full of Calm. My excellent pianist friends Erica Sipes (USA) and Sandra Mogensen (Canada) adopted my little tune, recorded it on their social media to share said moment in the moment as it were. I hope it helped. I mean, if I can bring to even just one person some sense of calm solidarity, I’m happy with that. The fifth movement in the set, Victorious, resolute, but gracious, was a stream-of-consciousness creative response to the Biden Harris victory and the way they handled it so eloquently, so humbly, how they gave the world a sense of optimism once more. For a long while, I’d felt that I probably wouldn’t be welcome in America. As a mixed race, queer woman I was the antithesis of everything they valued. But now, people like me over there can feel human again. The relief! As for the other days of that week in November, they are part of a continuing series of daily composition exercises I started back in October in an effort to end a lengthy period of pandemic-induced creative block. Using a combination of exercises from Music Composition Toolbox (Barbeler/Blom/Hindson) and Brian Eno’s Oblique Strategies I’ve been able to find my creativity again. Starting a composition ‘habit’ is the best thing I’ve done for my writing all year and is how I mean to continue for a long time. Sally Whitwell12 November 2020
