First performed by Jordan Wright-Murray on 30 May 2019. The Cimbalom part may be played on a chromatic hammered dulcimer or hackbrett or any other instruments. Gongs - ideally 3 bossed/tuned gongs, non-specific pitches: high, medium, low. Bass drum - ideally an orchestral bass drum. The octave lower transposition indications in the cimbalom part are optional and when given beneath two-note chords only apply to the lower note. From bar 62 to the end the cimbalom may be played an octave higher than written. The cimbalom and gongs are played laissez vibrer throughout. The bass drum is played laissez vibrer, except where marked with x on stem (for example in bar 32), indicating dead stick technique. The narrator may choose one of two texts: A: The Troubles of an Automaton (Excerpt) by Clementina Maria Black B: The Table and the Chair by Edward Lear. 'The Troubles of an Automaton' was written by Clementina Maria Black (1853-1922) and published in the New Quarterly Magazine in 1876. The story begins with a fictional advertisement announcing a public exhibition of Mr. Slade's Famous Chess-Playing Automaton. 'The Table and the Chair' by Edward Lear (1812 - 1888) appeared in his collection 'Nonsense Songs' published in 1870. In the poem a table and a chair go for a walk around town, become lost, are taken back to their house by a group of small animals, and then dine and dance together.

Having worked primarily nightshift for the past few years, my life began a somewhat alternative nature – my day time was illuminated by the moon, and I watched the sun rise every day for three and a half years…I saw the city through different eyes, and watched as various denizens of the night would emerge and cavort beneath The Midnight Sun. I was exposed to an entirely different culture and learned that the city really didn’t sleep after all. The piece starts with the decline of the sun as the shadows grow longer and the creatures of the night begin to emerge beneath the stars. Secondly, we observe the midnight moon which acts as our illumination in the dark of night. Continuing on, the piece begins its celestial dance among the stars of the Northern hemisphere and finally ends with the emergence of dawn – the night slipping away like fragile tendrils of fog, or the vague ether of a dream. David Jaedyn Conley, 2005 Composer David Jaedyn Conley moves easily between the stridency of the Moderns and the sweetness of the Romantics. Duration: Around 8 minutes; one movement. Level: Great for a student recital piece; popular with college students. A rich, expressive, melodic piece written idiomatically for the cello's voice; easy for a performer to personalize. Appropriate for intermediate students, but certainly challenging enough to be of interest to professionals as well. Program Notes: This work is the third of three solo cello pieces written for Micah Claffey on pastoral/nature themes. The title refers to the surface of a body of water as one’s head breaks through after a long and strenuous swim beneath it. The core of this work is about defining the character of peace through the odyssey of a single cello’s musical voice. The peace theme starts as just a seed in the beginning; incomplete; represented by the first four notes (a pitch class: 0,4,6,7 or inverted as 0,1,3,7). The cello then plunges into tempestuous waters, but the seed is never lost throughout all the metamorphoses it goes through and all the commotion that surrounds it and this middle section becomes a time of catharsis and refinement. Finally, in the latter third of the work, the theme of peace breaks the surface in its complete form, starting out timidly, but soon climaxing to a powerful and penetrating statement and ending with a sense of relief, clarity, and renewal that exist not in spite of the tumultuous journey, but because of it. However, this piece went on to be performed in our holiday show, “A Winter’s Evening.†I have always loved the Gustav Holst melody to Christina Rossetti’s poem, subsequently it was that setting that I chose to arrange for our group. When I was selecting pieces for my second collection of Christmas Preludes, I knew this would be among them. The piece starts out quite gently, and in my mind’s ear I hear a cello and oboe establishing a mood of utter serenity and calm as the snow gently falls outside the frost-covered window. Soon the oboe is joined by a clarinet as they play a duet while the cello continues the gentle sway of eighth notes. For the pianist, there must be great control of the left hand to keep it as calm as possible while the melody floats above, just as the snow falls to the earth. As the second verse begins, the right hand now plays a triplet pattern beneath the melody. It is a gentle breeze, stirred by the wings of angels and cherubim, upon which the crystalline flakes swirl and dance in the cold night air. All the while the left hand continues its steady motion of eighth notes. Halfway through the triplet pattern moves to the left hand and the right hand takes up the eighth notes while still keeping the melody above all. The verse comes to a close with a slowing of the tempo to emphasize the importance of what the poet states in the last lines of the poem: “Yet what I can I give Him, — Give my heart.†It is all that any of us can do, and all that we are asked to do.

The texts are full of a kind of raw energy, swashbuckling attitude, and profundity of heart and commitment characteristic of those settlers west of the Hudson. I had also looked at the more erudite essays of Coleridge-Taylor, Thoreau, and Emerson but chose the rougher stanzas because the primitive voices, the pioneers, were profound, simply in the way they expressed the nature of their experiences. The first piece, 'Comin’ to Town,' is about cowboys after a month on the range—bawdy, rowdy, and raucous. The second, 'Beneath These Alien Stars,' is about the bonding of the human spirit to the land. The third piece, 'A Hoopla,' depicts a barn dance and vocalists circle ‘round the instruments, stomp, clap, and generally perform with abandon, vigor, and boisterousness.
