Published by Abigail Gilson (A0.1024939). Finding the Star is a slow-moving piece that draws out the idea of time being slowed down when one is lost. The theme of this piece is the idea of being lost at sea. The slow ground bass starts, the churning of the dark waves against the side of the ship. The sky and sea are the same type of dark, not a star or light can be seen anywhere above or below. On deck the crew wait for an order, though they are scared, there’s nothing they can do. They cannot make the star appear, and they cannot give direction without certainty that they’re going in the right direction. The waves turn and grow and often push the ship around, making everyone nervous, if they completely get turned they could get lost. The voices of the instruments trade places and come in and out of each other. Dancing around each other making a beautiful eerie melody. At the very end of the piece, the star is found. The clouds move and the moons bright light shines down on the weary travelers and they find hope again.

Published by Richard Hirsch (A0.1202804). I offer an original composition for solo acoustic guitar that I have carried with me over several decades and through several changes in living situation. I started working with the piece already back in the 1970s when I was living in Frankfurt/Main, Germany and kept developing it when I moved to Stockholm and from there to Gothenburg, Sweden. A first recording of the composition was made in a private studio just outside Gothenburg in 1987. I have only recently been able to transmit the piece to musical notation in preparation for publication.The piece has a relaxed nature and contains many repetitions of simple themes that are meant to evoke a sense of monotonous spaciousness. One musician who listened to the first recording said he thought it sounded minimalistic, which I thought was a good description, although at the time I was unaware that minimalism was a term used to describe a whole style of music. The piece has a rather meditative character in the first part, turning more rhythmic in the second part. The third part is a swing version of the first part and the piece ends with a return to the meditative straight first part. The piece is meant to be primitive in the sense of primordial and goes in something resembling a pentatonic scale based on A. The rhythmic second part should be played so that the guitar starts to hum an A tone, the humming carrying over into and through the more melodic sections. The composition has an organic development with slight variations in the basic themes as the piece progresses.Depending on the mood of the interpreting performer, the repetitions might be played in a different order or a different number of times. I seldom play the composition exactly the same every time myself. The piece has also worked as a basis for jam sessions with accompaniment of drums and a base, although the guitar had to have some sort of amplification. The piece can be played on either steel string or nylon string acoustic guitars, or electric guitars. I chose the title Big Drum because of the recurring base A that is a dominant feature of the piece, reminding me of the big drums played by people all over the world. The piece has a participatory character, especially in the more rhythmic and swing parts, inviting the listeners to clap, stamp their feet, or drum on whatever is available,As the notation is accompanied by tablature, I refrain from giving left hand fingering. The right hand fingering consists basically of base notes played by the thumb and treble notes played by alternating index and middle fingers in combination with the ring finger.

The composition starts in a fairly small composition in which, with the help of crescendos and several instruments, it works towards a strong, but above all open and cheerful part. This is followed by a short untuned percussion solo. After this, theme A is closed in a calm, non-violent manner. Immediately theme B comes in which is built up through crescendos and multiple instruments over time. Theme B also comes to a quiet end afterwards. After this theme A and B return at the same time, which builds up and closes in a grandiose way.NL:Deze compositie is geschreven voor één van de onderdelen van het D examen van Frits Renting. Het uitgangsdoel van de compositie was: filmmuziek. Geïnspireerd door bekende werken van Hans Zimmer, Brian Tyler, John Williams en werken van De Efteling. De compositie begint in een vrij kleine samenstelling waarbij, met behulp van crescendo's en meerdere instrumenten, het zich toewerkt naar een sterk, maar vooral open en vrolijk gedeelte. Dit wordt opgevolgd door een korte ongestemde slagwerk solo. Hierna wordt thema A op een rustige, geweldloze manier afgesloten. Direct komt thema B binnenvallen wat word opgebouwd door middel van crescendo's en meerdere instrumenten in loop van de tijd. Ook komt thema B daarna tot rustig einde. Hierna komen thema A en B tegelijkertijd terug wat zich opbouwt en op een grandioze manier, zich afsluit.

I decided to write a short fantasia about this phenomenon. I decided to use the very famous opening of the Mozart’s Ah vous dirai-je maman Variations for this piece. A very sweet sounding opening to a devastated effect. I have decided to use a pretty unconventional notation. I think a star is full of mystery, and you always get surprises when you improvise. In my music, I like to try new things! And of course, despite new things, I will always use back my own prestige extracts from some of my works. I have used an almost similar notation in my Sky 2 for piano solo, and the last movement of the Six Improvisatory Pieces for solo piano.The interval between the highest and the lowest pitch of the Mozart’s Variations is a Major 6th. To get the intended transcription into my work, I cut the keyboard into 6 different ranges. Because the range of the violin is not as big as the piano, I cut the violin into 3 different ranges. If want will to realize, Mozart uses all 6 notes of the opening C major scale, and hence, I transcribe it into chord clusters into my work. The Destruction of a Twinkling Star is dedicated to my friends Miss Lee Xin Yee and Mr Kelvin Koh.
