Donald J. (no, not him) Grout says that John Dowland's songs of 1590's sound entirely modern. Well, they do! STING recorded them, if that means anything to you. So then, what have composers been up to for the last 430 years?! I jest, but this piece is terrific. Be advised, the 'runs' are modal, in that the 7th degree is usually NOT just a semitone under the 8th/1st, but a whole tone. A bit like bagpipe music, in our day.

Catoctin Snowfall was inspired by a day of snow at Catoctin Mountain in Maryland. It begins peacefully and increases tempo to invoke images of snow blown by mountain winds. The second section, sounding unresolved, serves as a springboard for the soloist. After the solos, the piece returns to a peaceful mood with images of snow-covered woods. As with most of my music, Catoctin Snowfall can be performed in different ways. In addition to expressing a snow storm, it can have a joyful spirit of children (or one's inner child) enjoying the snow. This setting for Christmas represents the cold of a Northern winter (the cruel wind blows) although of course the actual events took place in rather warmer climes. It also reflects much of the liturgical and popular symbolism of the Christmas season: robins, holly etc and it brings our thoughts towards the season of Easter with the blood of Good Friday. A robin brought some holly all covered with snow. The cruel wind blows. From each little berry fell drops of blood, Which covered the earth where the Virgin once stood. The cruel wind blows. Dark was the sky when Angels came to stay, They brought old lanterns to lead the way. The cruel wind blows. Candles brightly shine for all to see, They glow tonight through the ageing year. Tender are the lilies as soft as her gown And white are the ringlets that fall to the ground. Mary with her child upon this Winter night, She walked through the darkness with yellow candle light. North winds blow across the fields, But only one child continues to dream. Published by Niska Music Publishing (A0.1077067). A sense of foreboding fills the air as this piece begins. There is a darkness on the horizon and it can mean only one thing: the storm approaches. The simple chords of the intro present a feeling of calm that belies the impending torrent. The music takes a deep breath and then…it begins. In the left hand, a figure reminiscent of Chopin’s “Revolutionary†Etude begins (though not nearly as quick). The rains start to fall and the winds begin to blow as the storm builds in intensity. Measure by measure the music grows in strength until the climax is reached and the gales begin to subside with the last crashes of thunder. For all its fury, the storm is over. The clouds begin to recede across the horizon and in the end, a single ray of sunlight breaks through the gloom.
