The sonata is the first of a set of six published in Paris in 1725 by L’Auteur & Boivin ‘Avec Privilege du Roy.1725.’ The title page described them as ‘SONATES EN TRIO pour Trois Flûtes Transversieres sans Basse Par MR BOISMORTIER. OEVRE SEPTIÈME.’
The publication consisted of a set of parts each with the title page followed by a copy of the Privilége granted by King Louis to Boismortier to print and sell his music.
There are 5 movements, Gravement,Allemande Gayment, Lentement, Gavotte en rondeau & Gayment, The sonata is easily within the ability of players of intermediate standard and will provide enjoyable practice in independent part playing for players of equal ability.
The Sonata could also be played by trios of oboes, clarinets or violins.

The original publication was printed in soprano clef (with g on the bottom line), a common practice in France at the time. Obvious mistakes and omissions have been corrected without comment, trills have been added where there is for e.g. a sequence where only the first trill has been indicated or a similar passage has a trill in that part or another part. The more modern tr has been substituted for + and the mordant used on shorter notes retained. No dynamics were included in the original and none have been added. Players should feel free to add their own. For the arrangement some changes of register have been made to accommodate the ranges of the oboe and clarinet and additional slurs have been added (dashed lines). Players are free to retain the ‘feel’ of early eighteenth century style whilst playing modern instruments. The original publication used the, now defunct, soprano clef (with G on the bottom line of the stave) and this edition has been transcribed into the modern treble clef. In the eighteenth century it was quite usual for wind players to play several instruments. The use of the soprano clef would have made it easier to switch between flute and bassoon.

This is the first of a set of ‘ SIX GENTILLESSES EN TROIS PARTIES’ for musette (a type of bagpipe), viele (an early violin) and a bass instrument (probably a cello) published by Boivin in Paris in 1731 and described as also playable on recorder, transverse flute, oboe or violin. Of course all the parts could be doubled (good for sales) and the instructions ‘tous’ for all players and ‘seul’ when only one should play would come in useful. Boismortier became very wealthy from sales of his music. The three movements, Gayment, Gracieusement & Gayment are for three independent players of intermediate standard and above. This arrangement for flute, oboe and bassoon or cello has been lightly edited. All edits are shown in parentheses ( ) or dashed lines. The original two top parts have been set in the modern treble clef. The Boivin edition used the old violin clef. The edition also had no dynamic markings as the musette was not capable of dynamic variation. Generally the sections marked ‘tous’ should be louder than those marked ‘seul’ but, since dynamics are so much a matter of personal taste, I have left these to the performers’ discretion.

It has been edited and arranged for pairs of flutes or oboes or violins. It would also work very well for a pair of clarinets. Players of Intermediate standard and above will enjoy the five contrasting movements in the Baroque French style, Ouverture, muzette, Viele, Menuet, Sarabande & a pair of Contredances. The format is a playing score.The original edition used the ‘violin clef’ which placed the g above middle c on the bottom line of the stave instead of the line above as is usual today.The notation has been modernised for ease of reading. All edits have been indicated using dashed lines or parentheses ( ). No dynamics are marked in the original edition since bagpipes do not usually have means of volume control. The dynamics I have added (in parentheses) are suggestions only.The Suite would have been bought and played by flute, oboe and violin players as well as bagpipers. Boismortier wrote and published a substantial number of chamber works aimed at amateur players which were very popular and made him a very wealthy man.

A copy of the Privilége du Roy. granted by King Louis on March 22nd 1724 was printed in full on the second page.Each sonata has 4 or 5 movements in the same key alternating slow and fast and is written for players of equal ability. Teachers will find them useful for developing independent part playing in players of intermediate ability.The sonatas are also suitable for pairs of oboes or violins - or possibly clarinets.

This is the first of a set of six Concertos ‘pour 5 flûtes - Transversieres ou autres Instruments sans basse’ published in Paris ‘Avec Privilége du Roy.’ in 1727. The part for the fifth flute was figured and this would have enabled it to be played on a keyboard or transposed down an octave on a bassoon or cello. A bass clef part is included in the set of parts. The fifth part could also be played on a bass flute if one is available. The other parts could also be played on recorders, oboes or violins depending on the players available. There are 3 movements, Adagio and 2 contrasting Allegros. Players of intermediate attainment will enjoy this piece. A score and 6 parts which includes part 5 in the bass clef is included.

Each sonata has 4 movements slow and fast alternating in the same key. The six opus 8 sonatas were published in Paris in 1725 for ‘deux Flûtes-Transversiere sans Basse’. They were published ‘Avec Privilége du Roy.’ They were printed as a playing score preceeded by a title page which also gave details of where to obtain copies - L’Auter, Le Sr. Boivin & Le Sr. Le Clere. It is highly likely that the sonatas would have been played by pairs of oboes or violins or possibly by bassoons or cellos according to the players available in the homes of the wealthy amateur players who could afford to buy music. The flute parts were printed in the soprano clef - with G on the bottom line. This would have been convenient for flute players who often also played bassoon when required and were often not keyboard players. This edition uses the modern bass clef and has a score plus separate parts to facilitate page turns. In editing the sonatas the presentation of the music has been modernised.

The first of six sonatas for four equal players published ‘avec Privilege du Roi’ in Paris in 1731. They were published as a set of parts for three transverse flutes or violins or other instruments ‘avec la Basse’. There are four movements, all in G minor, Adagio, Presto, Adagio & Allegro. The only dynamic marking is the ‘Piano’ marked at the end of the last movement. The ornaments - trills, mordants & grace notes - are all carefully included and further decoration of the parts was not expected in French music of this period unlike in Italian music. However, more experienced players should feel free to add a little more decoration at the final cadences of the slow movements. None of the movements have repeated sections and it is clear from the flow of the music that this is not an omission. Missing slurs have been added (dashed lines) along with a few phrasing suggestions. The arrangement includes a clarinet which would not have been available until over 30 years after publication but this arrangement is most likely to be played on modern instruments so it gives a modern woodwind quartet the opportunity to play music of this period in the appropriate style. Players of intermediate ability will enjoy this piece.
