I wrote Sharktooth Frenzy for Danny Holt in January 2014, while in residence at The Hermitage Artist Retreat in Manasota Key, Florida, a special place, paleotologically, because fossilized shark teeth from up to 50 million years ago wash up on the beach here every day. Around 50 million years ago, Florida was completely under the ocean, and layers of limestone accumulated to create the bed rock of Florida. Starting around 30 million years ago, as the Earth cooled, sea levels dropped and Orange Island emerged in what is now north central Florida. 10 million years later, in the Miocene period, tectonic activity forced uplift around Orange Island and Florida began to resemble the land mass it is today. The coastal area was still covered by a shallow sea, but land animals lived inland. Further north the Appalachian Mountains were forming and sediment was flowing into Florida making very nutrient rich waters, which sank to the bottom of these shallow seas entombing dead marine animals and teeth from sharks (sharks loose teeth frequently, going through up to 30,000 in their lives). This continued until around 5 million years ago. There is an abundance of these fossilized teeth and other bones in the Peace River Formation and Myakka River, which washes out into the gulf each day, and then subsequently the fossils wash up onto the beaches of Manasota Key and Venice Beach. So while I was composing this piece for Danny, I was also obsessively collecting shark teeth. I’d go out each day as the tide was retracting and collect hundreds, actually thousands, of teeth. And it was a bit of a frenzy. So I decided this piece had to be about this process, collecting as many teeth as I could find and coming back to write music!About the ComposerChristine Southworth (b. 1978) is a composer and video artist based in Lexington, Massachusetts, dedicated to creating music born from a cross-pollination of sonic ideas. Music for a While #6411603. Published by Music for a While (A0.914175). Dance (Juba) is the fifth piece from Dett’s piano suite In the Bottoms (1913) and was one of his most well known pieces. The work was performed and recorded by Percy Grainger, a fact that was used as marketing on the cover of the 1918 publication by Clayton F. Summy Co., Chicago. About the work, Dett wrote:Juba is a social group-dance that involves stamping on the ground with the foot and following it with two staccato pats of the hands in two-four time. At least one-third of the dancers keep time in this way, while the others dance. Sometimes all will combine together in order to urge on a solo dancer to more frantic (and at the same time more fantastic) endeavours. The band usually consists of a single fiddler perched high on a box or table; who, forgetful of self in the rather hilarious excitement of the hour, does the impossible in the way of double stopping and bowing. A word of warning in regard to the tempo. Do not take it too fast! Much of the dancing in the river bottoms is done with a grace and finish that a Presto tempo never could suggest.R. Nathaniel Dett

Programme Notes - Solo Piano Work In 2006, I was living on the hills which form the border between England and Wales; this is deemed to be an area of special scientific interest where the many wonders of Nature abound. Rhaeadr means 'waterfall' in the Welsh language and my piece is a sound picture of the myriad forms, shapes, stillnesses and polar dynamic forces that waterfalls can evoke; from thundering torrents and sunlit pools to droplets and sprays that spirit into being, white and ghostly mists before our very eyes. The music begins with a ‘trickling’ movement from the top of the waterfall and makes it’s way down, crashing into rocks, swerving around them and almost coming to a halt in a shallow, sunlit pool which lies, temporarily, in a plateau. Then, finding a crevice to squeeze through, the water continues it’s unrelenting descent - finally reaching the bottom of the hill and coming to rest in calm liquidity. My thanks go to the pianist, Marija Vrskova at the FAMES studio in Macedonia where Rhaeadr was recorded under my remote direction and mixed and mastered by Laurent Köpitz and his commendable team.
