The use of Holly and Ivy have been traditional in English Christmas decorations since the fifteenth century. What Child Is This? was written as a hymn in 1865 by William Chatterton Dix who was inspired to write the carol after recovering from a near fatal illness. The Huron Carol (or ‘Twas in the Moon of Wintertime) is a Canadian Christmas hymn (Canada's oldest Christmas song), written probably in 1643 by Jean de Brébeuf, a Jesuit missionary at Sainte-Marie among the Hurons in Canada. Brébeuf wrote the lyrics in the native language of the Huron/Wendatpeople; the song's original Huron title is Jesous Ahatonhia (Jesus, he is born). The song's melody is based on a traditional French folk song, Une Jeune Pucelle (A Young Maid). The well-known English lyrics were written in1926 by Jesse Edgar Middleton. The English organist, singer, and composer Clement Woodcock spent most of his career at Canterbury Cathedral, and, after 1570, at Chichester Cathedral. His only surviving works are five pieces for viol consort, including the fine Browning My Dear. Browning was one of several melodies that Elizabethan composers used as the basis for instrumental works. The form of his Browning My Dear is simple but effective: the eight-measure Browning tune is always present, migrating from line to line, as the other parts weave increasingly elaborate counterpoint around it. In performing this, the ensemble should take care that the Browning melody (marked mf), is always clearly audible. This arrangement was written in 1990 for the Glenwood Moravian Trombone Choir (Madison, WI), and revised in 2022.

It tells of a woman desperately hoping for a southerly wind to blow her lover back home over the sea to her. This folk song has origins in Tyneside. The chorus of Blow the Wind Southerly first appeared in print in the 1834 publication The Bishoprick Garland by Cuthbert Sharp. The 1882 book Northumbrian Minstrelsy published an arrangement by John Collingwood Bruce and John Stokoe of the chorus in D major and a 6/8 time signature. In the 1892 book Songs and Ballads of Northern England, Stokoe added to Blow the Wind Southerly three new verses written by John Stobbs on a broadside. Adopted in 1922, the anthem's words are by John Grandell, and the music was composed by Johan Fridolf Hagfors. The song was first performed during the song festival in Mariehamn 1922. In Åland, the song is mostly sung on Midsummer's Eve and on the national day of Åland on 9 June. The song originally had four verses, but the third verse has been omitted for a long time when the song is sung and often when it appears in print.Johan Fridolf Hagfors (11 March 1857–18 August 1931) was a Swedish newspaper publisher, music critic and composer, most known for having composed the two songs Modersmålets sång (The mother tongue's song) and Ålänningens sång (Song of the Ålender).Born in Orimattila, he got a Cand.phil degree in 1881. In 1883 he became publicist of the small Åbo paper Turun Lehti which was published in Finnish but at the same time Svecoman; it became the only newspaper with that combination to reach a wide readership. He also worked as a teacher in Åbo.He composed several songs for male quartets. Modersmålets sång was first performed in 1989 and is today considered an unofficial hymn for the Swedish-speaking population of Finland. Ålänningens sång, for which he composed the melody, was first performed during the song festival in Mariehamn in 1922 and is today the regional hymn for Åland.In 1912 he became a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music.Due to stiff competition, Turun Lehti ceased publication in 1919. Hagfors subsequently moved to Stockholm and obtained Swedish citizenship. He died in 1931. Fellow composer Erik August Hagfors was his half-brother.
