Stewart (A0.1093336). “Sing me a Song of a Lad who is Goneâ€, text by Robert Louis Stevenson, to a tune attributed to Anne Campbelle MacLeod who heard boatmen break into “a Gaelic iorram (or rowing song)†while on a trip to the Isle of Skye. MacLeod’s tune evolved into today’s “The Skye Boat Songâ€, and has since morphed into the Theme Song for the popular television series – Outlander. MacLeod’s melody originally had lyrics by Sir Harold Edwin Boulton (1859-1935) published in 1884. Stevenson disliked the sentimentality of Boulton’s words so much he composed his own in 1892. This arrangement is scored for a 4-part SATB ensemble to be performed a cappella. Performance time: 3:05+.

The arrangement follows each key change as it happens in the song. While the key changes can feel daunting, the parts were simplified to help accommodate for the intermediate to late intermediate level pianists. The rather intriguing solo and breakdown before the final rendition of the refrain has been transcribed for the piano as well! A little extra tidbit has been added to bring the fade out into an ending.The duration of the piece is 4:30. It could work nicely as a recital piece or a perhaps as a prelude to an event, if one would like.

Composer’s Note - DaybreakDuring the Winter of 2016, I journeyed to my hometown Canberra for a job interview and audition. It was for the head of the new Music Academy at Canberra Girls Grammar School, my old school. Which was kind of weird. As part of my specifically designed interview/audition experience, I was required to run a composition workshop, and this song D​aybreak ​is the result of that.It was an odd experience to return to the scenes of my youth, to see how much everything had changed. So many new buildings, so many of the old buildings repurposed, so many more opportunities afforded to the girls at the school now than we could ever have dreamed in the late 80s and early 90s. It was pretty early in the morning when I arrived, the winter mist just beginning to clear to one of those perfect sunny cold Canberra days. The school is directly down the road from Parliament House, and as the mist cleared to reveal that magnificent flagpole above the treetops surrounding the school, I decided that the joy and optimism of a new day would be the perfect subject for our composing collaboration.The girls were very generous with their ideas. The song was finished within a few days and I sent it back to the school. I ​think​ they liked it? It was hard to tell from their response. I didn’t get the job. (No surprise to me, as I have almost never been successful at auditions and job interviews. Fortunately people just know my work, ask me to do stuff, and I just say yes. Haha.) But I’m a big believer in creativity as a way of healing. I still really like our song we wrote, those lovely girls and I, so I am releasing it into the wild.

He added poems and revised others for each succeeding edition. Thus, the first edition (1819) was a small book with only 12 poems and the last, often refered to as the Deathbed Edition (1892), contained over 400. Some of these he wrote in “clusters†of related poems. Such is the case with the Calamus cluster. The title was chosen to alert the reader that these were poems about what he called “the love of comrades,†“manly love†or with the code word, “adhesiveness.†The concept of homosexuality, as we know it today, was very different in Whitman’s time, but violently socially taboo. Acorus calamus is a reed-like species of marsh grass. In Poetry and Prose, Whitman wrote that it s a … very large and aromatic grass, or root, spears three feet high—often called 'sweet flag'—grows all over the Northern and Middle States.†The phallic plant has always been a symbol of love and associated with the Greek myth of Kalamos, son of the river god who loved the youth Karpos. When Karpos died in a swimming accident, Kalamos transformed himself into a reed so he could always be near the spot where his beloved died, and the rustling of the reeds in the winds sounds like moans of mourning. The Calamus cluster, 39 poems in all, recount the story of a manly love found and lost from the perspective of some time later. They are bittersweet memories. I chose four poems for my own cluster. They represent the four stages of such a relationship: initial attraction, first coy interactions, full-blossomed love, and the bitterness of it’s ending. It is possible that these events actually happened or that they all occurred in the poets mind without ever revealing his thoughts to the intended. Some musical devices, such as the rustling of the leaves in the third song and the constant use of seconds as two people who are close but not yet together in the second one, are obvious. But, other than some indications of tempo, I hesitate to give out remarks about how to perform the songs, or even metronome markings, that might give the singer a preconceived notion. This situation has happened to everyone. So, I say to the singer: revive the memories of a similar event in your life: a particularly heartbreaking one is best. Bring the telling of that memory to the vivid present, and tell us that story as if it ending some time ago but the hurt remains strong, If, by some chance, the singer has not had this experience, he should wait to sing this cycle until he has. A full bass transcription of the Queen classic 'I Want To Break Free'. This is a beginner to intermediate level bass line from the master John Deacon. I have also included a TAB stave throughout with fingering based how Deacon performed the track live.The vast majority of the song is in second position with a focus on consistent fingerstyle playing. The accents outline the pulse the bass is playing against the drums. There is one super catchy dominant arpeggio fill to transition into the Chorus which moves up to the sixth position. In the last verse we see the introduction of some alternating octave patterns which is relatively easier for more experienced players whilst proving a great introduction to the style for beginners. The piece opens with a constantly descending scale as a mother sings to her sleeping child. As more voices are layered in, the texture becomes increasingly lush, but still soothing. The third stanza of text is marked with peaceful harp-like figures (as thy softest limbs I feel) while the voices take over the calming decent into deeper, more peaceful sleep. The mother’s concern suddenly changes as the descending scale transforms and (the cunning wiles that creep) set in. Anticipation of escaping the terror of potential nightmares escalates as the ascending textures grow more tense and dissonant. The tension finally peaks with a breathless silence before resolving with (then the dreadful night shall break). But as the song cycle continues we see that for some women, their dreams will never become a reality. We see hints of this in this piece, as in the second section, the piece dips into a minor key. Suggesting that the woman girl has started to give up on her dreams. But the girl keeps singing, saying that she’ll help a fainting robin. She has not given up yet, and will not let her dreams fade.
