Key: G major.Improvised and also composed solo cadenzas, normally occuring towards the end of a bravura aria or an instrumental concerto movement, have existed since the late 16th century. They provide the performer with an opportunity for self-presentation in the form of a free style of playing or singing, based on themes and motifs from previous sections of the movement. Solo cadenzas are for the most part introduced by a six-four chord held by the orchestra; the soloist begins a protracting interpolation in free stlye, subsequently culminating on the dominant chord, usually with a trill. Whereas originally composers left solo cadenzas to be freely improvised, from the middle of the 19th century onwards they were frequently specifically written out. The increasing abuse of cadenzas as a mere display of free virtuosity, ignoring the style and impetus of the composition, played a substantial factor in this development. Thus Beethoven gives the soloist no opportunity whatsoever for free improvisation in his 5th piano concerto in which the cadenza becomes an integral, obligatory component of the complete work. In this unique series Schott Music presents cadenzas created for well-known instrumental concertos from the Classical and Romantic periods by major composers and soloists of our time. Nino Rota dedicated the Kadenzen zum Klavierkonzert Nr. 4 in G-Dur (Cadenzas of the Concerto No. 4 for Piano and Orchestra in G major) Hob. XVIII:4 by Joseph Haydn to Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli (1920-1995), who recorded them for the label EMI.

Erwin Schulhoff composed his cadenzas for Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Concertos No. 1-4 (no independent cadenza is intended for Piano Concerto No. 5) in Berlin in 1923. That means they were written at the same time as his Concerto for piano and small orchestra Op. 43, which combines impressionism and jazz and can be regarded as the first 'jazz' piano concerto in music history. The present cadenzas, however, do not show any influences of jazz but follow entirely the classical piano concerto tradition in a way which is virtuosic, and yet comapratively easy to play.

The cadenza for the Concerto in G major and the two cadenzas for the Concerto in D major are not difficult to play and follow the spirit of Mozart. This edition continues the successful Cadenza series of Schott Music, this time with the flute as solo instrument.

Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 24 in C Minor, K. 491, was composed in 1975 for Dillon Ford's personal use as soloist in performances at Florida International University. Since no Mozart cadenza survives for this, perhaps the most romantic of all the Mozart concertos, he consciously set out to create his own cadenza in a kind of hybrid style that is as much redolent of the Viennese Ländler as it is of the Brahms waltzes. Nor did he hesitate to introduce such stylistically advanced features as the concluding double trills, which are virtually unknown in Mozart's keyboard compositions. He believes the result is a concise but effective classico-romantic cadenza in quasi-improvisatory style well suited to its original purpose. He offers it to the pianist who is seeking musically engaging material that has as yet been little heard during public performances of what is perhaps Mozart's greatest contribution to the piano concerto genre.

She composed pieces for piano, concertos, quartets, and was known for her scientific studies on the hand techniques of the Piano.Her cello concerto in F major, dedicated to Jules Delsart, is a rather unknown gem to the cello community. While arrangements of her manuscript for Cello and Orchestra have been performed, her personal arrangment of the concerto for Cello and Piano is not as well-known. Following the manuscript from the Bibliothèque nationale et universitaire of Strasbourg (BNU), this edition features a similar 1st and 3rd movement, with a novel 2nd movement in a similar style as compared to her orchestra version.
