Borne was a flutist with the principal opera company in Bordeaux as well as a composer and professor at the conservatory in Toulouse. Expert in both instrumental technique and in the development of the flute as an instrument, he is still recognized for his technical contributions to the Böhm flute. His Fantasie Brillante on Themes from Bizet’s Carmen is by far his most famous composition. Borne’s setting of Carmen’s luscious melodies – like those by Sarasate for the violin, and by Busoni and Horowitz for the piano – combine the virtuoso’s understanding of the solo instrument with a flair for the dance rhythms and passionate colors of the opera. Borne fills his setting with spectacular arpeggios that require fleet fingering and consummate breath control. Carmen’s brilliant Habanera, a traditional dance that she performs with castanets (and with abundant flirting), anchors the work. But the mood of Borne’s Carmen is far brighter than that of the fatalistic Gypsy girl of Bizet’s opera. In Borne’s showpiece, a set of brilliant variations on her showy Habanera leads to a triumphant close – in marked contrast with the opera’s violent, tragic ending. In this version, the composition was arranged for Solo Flute and Concert Band by Harry Walker.

A double reed transcription of the Intermezzo from Carmen Suit No. 1. This was one of the most difficult pieces I’ve ever tried to transcribe, but I didn’t want to leave it out of the suite. Trying to mimic the harp with a double reed ensemble was difficult, but I decided to split it among many parts so notes could ring a little instead of giving the part to just one player. Also, I was very tempted to change the key because of the horrible range, but no matter which way I went, it only created more problems than it solved. As such, a very simple and beautiful piece has become quite difficult to play. Still, with a lot of breath control and skill, it works rather nicely.

Flowers For Dorothy is a beautiful jazz waltz (in lead-sheet format here) from pianist Mark Massey's breakthrough jazz LP: API: Acoustic Piano International, performed by Mark Massey and his trio (Eric Stiller on acoustic bass and Aldo Bentivegna on drums). In the vein of great jazz waltzes like Someday My Prince Will come, Emily, and Waltz for Debby.ABOUT MARK:In 2018, the California State Assembly and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors issued proclamations recognizing Mark Massey as a Jazz Living Legend. Jazz pianist-composer Mark Massey was born and raised in Lynwood, California, where he showed early talent on piano, trombone, and drums. During high school, he studied classical piano and played in the bands Synopsis (with future trumpet giant Wayne Bergeron), and Sabor (with Poncho Sanchez and the Banda Brothers). Mark played in the Pico Rivera Stage Band, which won First Place at the Hollywood Bowl Battle of the Bands. Mark graduated from California State University, Long Beach (with Bachelors and Masters degrees in Music), where he was recipient of the Carmen Dragon Fellowship for composition and he was dubbed A Young Giant by the National Association Of Jazz Educators. Mark has performed throughout the U.S., Europe, the former Soviet Union (in the 1980s), Russia (2001), the Far East and India. He has worked with Larry Carlton, David Benoit, Paul Horn, Hubert Laws, Louie Bellson, the Side Street Strutters, Phil Upchurch, L. Subramaniam, Freddie Hubbard, Maynard Ferguson, Yehudi Menuhin, Stéphane Grappelli, and Tony Williams. Mark was featured in The Four Pianos In Concert series along with pianists Paul Smith, Pete Jolly and Steve Allen. Mark Massey's debut CD, Acoustic Piano International, has received wide airplay on jazz radio. API featured nine of Mark's original jazz compositions--including Flowers for Dorothy, offered here--inspired by his musical excursions around the globe, along with Eric Stiller (bass) and Aldo Bentivegna (drums), and guest artists Alex Acuña, percussion (Weather Report), Justo Almario, flute (Mongo Santamaria), Plas Johnson, tenor sax (The Pink Panther Theme), Bob Mintzer, soprano sax (The Yellow Jackets), and Ron Stout, flugelhorn, More recently, Mark has been recording his iconic Jazz Thoughts for the Day albums of original jazz improvisional compositions for each day of the year. Diese Gebete werden den Tieren in den Mund gelegt, die mit Noah, in der drangvollen Enge der Arche vereint, das Ende der Sintflut erwarten. Die Dichterin folgt einer Tradition - man denkt an Asop, La Fontaine und Goethe - wenn sie im Wesen der Kreaturen Spiegelungen menschlicher Schwachen, Fehler und Tugenden erkennt. Denn die in der Wasserwuste gefangenen Tiere reden so fromm, furchtsam, selbstgerecht und banal, wie es menschlich ware. Und auch das Allzumenschliche - Hoffart, Leichtsinn, Neid - kommt zu Wort. Nur dass die Ichbefangenheit der betenden Tiere ihrer Unschuld keinen Abbruch tut. Ihre bedingte und bedrangte Natur findet Gedanken, die uns ein sympathisierendes Lacheln abgewinnt. Die Besetzung soll solistisch sein, kann aber bei den Streichern (und wenn die Klangbalance zum Chor dies wunschenswert macht) zu einem kleinen Kammerorchester erweitert werden. Der Charakter der Instrumente, ihre Techniken und Farben, erlauben mir realistische Klangmetaphern und physiognomische Parallelen - so, wenn das Cello im Duett mit dem Alt die hochmutige Giraffe in grossintervalligen Sprungen deutet, die rasende Geschaftigkeit der Ameise sich in schnellen Violinbariolagen ausdruckt oder die Oboe ein naturalistisches Rabengekrachz horen lasst. Der Charakter der Instrumente, ihre Techniken und Farben, erlauben mir realistische Klangmetaphern und physiognomische Parallelen - so, wenn das Cello im Duett mit dem Alt die hochmutige Giraffe in grossintervalligen Sprungen deutet, die rasende Geschaftigkeit der Ameise sich in schnellen Violinbariolagen ausdruckt oder die Oboe ein naturalistisches Rabengekrachz horen lasst. Der Zyklus beginnt mit dem Gebet des Noah. Man stelle sich das Gedrange und Geschrei vor, dass die Arche erfullt, die hochgehenden Wogen, den prasselnden Regen, und mitten darin den Urvater Noah, dem sich der Ausruf entringt: Herr, was fur ein Zirkus! Seine Ausbruche korrespondieren mit dem auf- und niederwogenden Streichersatz, bis der Sturm sich legt, die Wogen sich glatten und Noah in der mehrmals gedehnten Phrase Es dauert lange seine Ergebung und Hoffnung ausdruckt. Nach dem pharisaischen Gebet der Giraffe ergreift die Schildkrote das Wort. Ihr Instrument ist die Bratsche. Ihre schnaufende Kurzatmigkeit hindert sie, ihr Gebet zusammenhangend zu sprechen. Der fleissigen Ameise - sie erbost sich sehr uber die Grille, deren Wirtshausmusik sie unterbricht - folgt der Hahn mit hellen und scharfen Tonen. Er ist es, der die Sonne aufgehen lasst; man kann es in dem sich auffaltenden Klang der Coda horen. Der vergessliche Schmetterling taumelt in immer neu variierten Oboenfiguren durch die glasernen Sommerklange von Streicherflageoletts, bis es ihm einfallt, was er sagen wollte: Amen. Das Schwein bekennt sich zu seiner schnuffelnden und grunzenden Natur, die, von den Streichern mit rauhem Bogendruck gezeichnet, in der Coda durch eine stille F-Dur-Kantilene eine sonderbare Verklarung erfahrt. Vor uns die Sintflut ruft der Rabe, und sein durchdringender Oboenschrei ubertont das Wogen und Schwanken der Streicher, die hier Motive aus dem Gebet des Noah wieder aufnehmen. In der darauf eintretenden Stille bieten die Instrumente verschiedene Themen an, die folgenlos verschwinden - um nach dem Altsolo Die Arche wartet sich in einem ruhig-feierlichen a-cappella-Satz mit alternierendem Soloquartett wieder zusammenzufinden und das Werk in reinem Es-Dur beschliessen. Que Garota Linda is a high energy, very exciting, Brazilian-Latin style instrumental from pianist Mark Massey's breakthrough jazz LP: API: Acoustic Piano International. The piano and flute interact, with the flute (performed by guest flutist Justo Almario) and piano trading sections of the main melody, and then providing dynamic background hooks and counterpoint. It's a great vehicle for musical interplay, jazz improvisation, and high energy rhythm section playing. The API track featured Eric Stiller on acoustic bass and Aldo Bentivegna on drums, with guest percussionist Alex Acuña of Weather Report, backing Mark Massey and Justo Almario. Jazz pianist-composer Mark Massey was born and raised in Lynwood, California, where he showed early talent on piano, trombone, and drums. During high school, he studied classical piano and played in the bands Synopsis (with future trumpet giant Wayne Bergeron), and Sabor (with Poncho Sanchez and the Banda Brothers). Mark played in the Pico Rivera Stage Band, which won First Place at the Hollywood Bowl Battle of the Bands. Mark graduated from California State University, Long Beach (with Bachelors and Masters degrees in Music), where he was recipient of the Carmen Dragon Fellowship for composition and he was dubbed A Young Giant by the National Association Of Jazz Educators.
