Settings vary from lyrical to marcato and tempos range from adagio to allegro. Using serial twelve-tone technique, each study's tone row is used only in original and retrograde (reversed) forms. Interval review in the studies begins with seconds and gradually expands to focus on thirds, fourths, tritones, fifths, sixths and sevenths. While 14 different time signatures are presented, beat subdivisions are not complex to facilitate precise rhythmic execution. Originally written for piano, it is a humoristic fusion of illustrations, music, prose poetry and calligraphy, the latter three provided by Satie. This fine 9-movement arrangement of the Suite by Charles Decker for standard brass quintet (Trumpets in b-flat) is 6 minutes in length and includes the original narration by Satie (translated into English). Appropriate for moderately advanced performers.
