I received an email from Joel Quarrington in 2011 with a request to buy a score and a set of parts to Hylidae … The Tree Frogs (1991) for violin, double bass and piano. He said he would like to perform the work at the next International Society of Bassists convention in Rochester, New York. I told him That is great. But it’s such an old work. Why don’t I write something new for you? He said, How much would a commission cost? I said, Let me write the piece first and if you like it, we can talk about a fee then. I began work on Toccata for Double Bass and Piano in late August and completed it on October 15. I sent Joel the music as a PDF and MIDI file via email. He wrote back, The piece looks really terrific and I have enjoyed listening to it as well, thanks for the midi file. I couldn’t be happier! Toccata is in three movements, fast-slow-fast, with internal ABA ternary forms in the first and last movements - also fast-slow-fast. Moderato … Trio … A tempo. Adagio. Allegro … Trio … Reprise! The first movement begins with a driving dotted-note motif in the double bass accompanied by an insistent sixteenth-note bass-line in the piano left hand and a soaring quarter-note melody in the piano right hand. A Trio follows which features a lyric melody in the double bass … molto cantabile! The double bass returns this time stealing the sixteenth-note bass-line motif from the piano left hand. The double bass pushes the music forward relentlessly and ferociously … holding no prisoners! To add counterpoint to this madness, the piano comes back with the quarter-note melody but in octaves this time. The left hand joins the melee occasionally to push the music forward until it reaches its climax at the conclusion. The second movement, Adagio, is a slow waltz. The mournful tune is delivered by the double bass at first, then it’s passed on to the piano, and it goes back and forth between the two. The third movement is a 6/8 romp, very syncopated and jazzy. The music goes back and forth between the double bass and piano, not unlike when the musicians in a jazz combo trade four’s among each other. An adagio Trio follows. The tune is in the double bass: long descending lines over a languid piano accompaniment. To complete the ABA format, the music from the beginning of this movement returns as a reprise. ENJOY!!! Commissioned by Joel Quarrington for a premiere performance at the 2013 International Society of Bassists Convention at Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York.

ATON is a stage play written by Manfred Strolz and Otmar Rützler which represents Egypt in the time of the Pharoahs but seen through the eyes of modern theatre directors and actors. The modern scenes are spoken but the Egyptian scenes require music, so Manfred and Otmar asked me to write the music for these. The music is composed for various forces as the play progresses, from the full orchestra (woodwind, strings, harp, piano, timpani) and choir down to more intimate moments with single voice or duets, flute and classical guitar or with single voice and bassoon. For each section the pdf file contains score and parts and the sound sample is an electronic preview. As I write 16 sections have been composed, but more are to come - please just search for Aton in due course for the full picture. Harald Genzmer has done a great deal for the promotion of young musical talent, and no doubt many a string instrument player can recall from their school orchestra days when his Sinfonietta was on the programme. But this highly prominent Hindemith pupil has written yet more of this educational music: all in all 3 sinfoniettas, in addition to collections of easy movements such as '14 Easy Pieces for String Orchestra' from 2002 which is also suitable for a Streicherschule. The individual movements involve specific styles and demands: cantabile playing, unusual and changing time signatures, bowing, pizzicato, intonation, scale playing, and so forth. The use of a double-bass is ad libitum. The pieces can be played separately or as little suites and are ideal for school and amateur orchestras; and regardless of it's educational nature, this music is lively and fun to play!

Colin Kirkpatrick Publications #6619197. Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.522289). This is an entertaining single-movement quartet scored for oboe, violin, viola and cello. With a running time of just over two and a half minutes, this lively piece is sure to please performers and audiences alike. The work was first performed at a concert in Ben’s Theater Jomtien by the Salaya Quartet, a distinguished group of musicians who at the time were section leaders in the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra. The first performance of the original oboe version of this work was given by Cooper Wright (oboe); Inga Causa (violin); Dr Danny Keasler (viola) and Martin Szawelski (cello). Although originally conceived as an encore piece, this lively work will enliven any concert program. It’s written in G major with two bright and rhythmic outer sections and a more reflective middle section that briefly gives the melody to the cello. The oboe part requires an experienced player but it is not especially challenging in terms of range. The cello part remains in the bass clef throughout. The work is also available scored for flute and string trio. The score has seven pages and the four instrumental parts have three pages each, with slightly enlarged print to facilitate performance. The score and parts are contained music in a single 20-page PDF file. Dr Colin Kirkpatrick studied at London’s Royal College of Music and followed a career in music education. He was a High School Music Director for about fifteen years and later became a Music Education Adviser, with the added responsibility for training teachers and directing the instrumental teaching service. He has published a great deal of music and his publishers include Boosey & Hawkes, Novello, Paxton, Schott, Oxford University Press, Chester and Belwin Mills. His music has been performed and broadcast all over Europe as well as in Japan, Thailand, Australia and the USA.
