The melody for this farewell song Sag’ beim Abschied leise ‘Servus’ comes from the failed operetta Blindekuh (1878) by Johann Strauss II (1825-1899). It was borrowed by composer Peter Kreuder and friends for the movie Burgtheater (1936). This charming waltz uses the word ‘Servus’ in the friendly colloquial way of greeting; it can be used either for saying hello as well as saying goodbye. This tune is a perfect ending or encore number for an evening of Viennese music, be it a concert or an outdoor event. It is arranged for 4-part SATB choir and piano. The text is German. Performance time: 2:15.

Published by PRB Music (A0.1382422). After being locked down by Covid, I had almost lost the will to live, let alone go on holiday again outside the UK. Two years before I had had a lovely time in Italy, visiting Rome, Pisa, Puccini's House, Florence, Sienna, and more. Almost at the end of the trip I stayed a couple of days with my dear musical friends in Perugia, where their then 8-year-old daughter, Martha, was making great strides forward on the violin (mum is a concert pianist and teacher, similarly dad, but on the clarinet. I had booked to stay in Cesena where they had moved two, and I had a lovely time here, two, adding Bologna, Rossini's Museum, Rimini and some of the Adriatic coast to my list of places visited. They, too, had had lockdowns, and cancellations, but quite by chance, the weekend I had planned to be in Cesena, was the rearranged date of a special outside concert in the imposing surroundings of Rocca Malatestiana, a medieval fortress than dominates the town. Martha was going to be performing a violin concerto by Rode, and her dad had adapted the orchestral accompaniment, so that the large clarinet ensemble could take its place on the night. It was a wonderful, moving evening, and Martha played so well. I don't think there was a dry eye in the house! When I knew I was visiting them this year, I wrote Martha a little fun piece, with piano accompaniment, that she might have been able to play while I was there. But because of the rescheduled concerto performance, there just wasn't enough time for her to learn and practise the piece with her violin teacher in Bologna. I even added an optional part for clarinet, so dad would not feel left out. Hopefully, one day, I might still hear Waltz for Martha played by its dedicatees! It's a kind of schmalzy Viennese Waltz, in the style of Kreisler and others! You can purchase the piano score and violin part here. He composed more than 600 pieces and had also a very successful appearance at the world exhibition in Chicage 1893. Hist operetta Der Schätzmeister op. 518 (The Appraiser) premiered in Vienna on 10 December 1904. The waltz Herrreinspaziert!, incorrectly written with three r instead of one to emphasize the pronounciation of arolling r bacame itself very popular. The arrangement of this waltz is kept in the original key of the composition for symphony orchestra. Is was first time performed by Salzburg Wind Philharmonic conducted by Hansjoerg Angerer at their Three Kings' Concert on 6 January 2023 in the Grosses Festspielhaus (Large Festival Hall) in Salzburg, Austria and broadcasted live by Austrian television. Previous to the orchestra version it was premiered on 15 February 1867 in a separate version with male-choir. So it is a real challenge to create an arrangement of this famous piece, which may dare a comparison with the original. The arrangement is kept in the original key of the composition for symphony orchestra and was commissioned and first time performed by Mozarteum Wind Philharmonic Salzburg conducted by Hansjoerg Angerer at their Three Kings' Concert on 6 January 2019 in the Grosses Festspielhaus (Large Festival Hall) in Salzburg, Austria and broadcasted live by Austrian television. It is in many respects a symphonic work for flute trio, with the characteristics and order of the four movements resembling the structure of a classical symphony. As a child during the Space Race, I was immensely interested in both terrestrial- and extraterrestrial-exploration, and as I composed this music a half-century later it made the most sense to set the musical ideas in this manner. In the first movement, Black Hole, two contrasting themes are presented and immediately developed: a theme of polyphonic gestures, with a contrasting second theme of chordal-textured music. The characteristic and somewhat liquid sound of the flute trio in the second theme is especially evident. The static and evolving blocks of music represent the gravitational collection of matter by a black hole. The second movement, A Crescent Moon, 1969, celebrates astronaut Neil Armstrong's moonwalk in July 1969. This slow, lyrical movement possesses a nocturnal quality while features the alto flute as a solo instrument. The third movement, SETI Radio (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence), is a slow through-composed scherzo. With piccolo, a high tessitura of the flute trio range is heard. The fourth movement is a dynamic Rondo Variations form. Quantum Waltz is just that, a small waltz where the music is developed with a recurring first section, alternating between new material.– Jeffrey HooverJeffrey Hoover's compositions- music ranging from soloist to symphony orchestra -have received recognition through the Universal Edition/SMP Press Contemporary Composition Award, the prestigious Trieste prize, the international Luigi Russolo competition, awards from Mu Phi Epsilon, the Lancaster Fine Arts Festival, grants, publications fellowships and more than 20 commissions. He is a member of the ACME roster of Mu Phi Epsilon, recognized for distinguished achievement as a composer. One unique aspect of Hoover’s work is when he combines composition with his paintings, creating synergetic art that intrigues and captivate audiences and performers alike. His paintings are seen in exhibitions and in concerts where his paintings are projected while musicians perform his music. Hoover’s background as a performer includes both classical and jazz music, as saxophonist and conductor. His book The Arts and Society: Making New Worlds is published by Kendall Hunt Publishing.Hoover was born on September 11, 1959, in Anderson, Indiana. Published by Alan Edgar Ted Moon (A0.903776). CONFUCIUS SAID: STRING TRIO violin, viola, cello. An interpretation of some of the annual ceremonial music honouring the great Chinese philosopher. Quotations of his sayings about music are included, for a performer to speak. This piece is inspired by the Confucius Birthday Ceremony, probably dating from the Chou Dynasty, 1046-221BCE.  The music, called Shao Music, has been played in all its magnificence since then. The event is highly choreographed and controlled musically, aiming to reflect and celebrate Confucius' philosphies of peace. Traditional Chinese music is primarily melodic, and western ears may feel the lack of harmonic richness. A player should read out the Confucius quotation at the beginning of each movement.   How to play... The melody and some of the bass line consists of the rows of pitch-classes in verses 1 and 2 of Honouring Confucius (Ta Tsai Kung-Tzu)  I have introduced rhythmic variety, harmony and some phasing and use the traditional pentatonic scale as rendered by the Chinese classical music instruments-drums, bells, flutes, and strings. The flute symbolises balance.  A man without...is a very short saraband, a courtly dance using all the pitches of verse 2 in order, with the strings muted.   It was by music... uses major triad fanfares where possible, with an occasional portamento.  Music produces a special... is a sensuous waltz: as with most of the movements, I have shamelessly used a tonal harmony under the notes of verse 4 (illustrated).  When music and courtesy... plays the notes of Verse 6 in quintuple time over a drone.  If one should desire...is a barefoot parade (gymnopedie?) in Satie's style.    Duration 7 minutes. Jacques Cousteau, Father of the Aqualung, wrote: The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder for ever.This piece, for virtuoso double bass, imagines a scuba-diver encountering large animals, and consists of a suite of short depictions of animals in the form of variations on a melody plus a recurrent new melody representing the diver's smooth movements and bubbles. The variations are: Lobster Jazz Waltz, Sea-anemone Belly-dance, Tuna Tune, Luminous Light Show, Dolphin Fling, Jaws Serial and Blues Whale Pavane.The piece lasts about eight minutes with repeats.TECHNICAL NOTE The C harmonics will be a pip flat--they are only bursting bubbles anyway!Scuba Fins tries to feel the quiet calmness and agelessness of the underwater world, using the ancient and universal major pentatonic scale C,D,E, G,A ,C. The rhythm is mostly steady and simple, but triplets indicate the occasional extra effort. Now and again, he glances down at the infinite depths. Tintinnabulation and soft staccatissimo arpeggios represent the bubbles. Lobster Waltz is a jazz waltz with many staccato notes and leaps representing the many appendages and the tangle of lively giant crustaceans.Sea-anemone Belly-Dance pictures the soft body and tentacles swaying under the waves, using the Arabic scale Shad 'Araban, roughly G,Ab, B,C,D,Eb,F#,G and influenced by a dance to the folk tune known as Bint El-Salabiya.Tuna Tune is a quick moto perpetuo in the cheerful major mode, septuple time, the rapid rise and fall of the phrases and of volume reflecting the powerful shoal's unpredictable, ceaseless movements, approaching and retreating.Dolphin Fling is a stathspey, or highland fling, using the major mode and typical dance rhythms including the Scotch snap to depict the weighty but intelligent dolphins enjoying their leisure time and perhaps dancing with the diver.Jaws Serial reminds us of the fear a shark generates, using the dissonant 12-note serial mode and unpredictable leaps and pauses. The opening slow trill will chill you as it invokes the Jaws film theme by John Williams. You might even hear the diver's heart sink and the snap pizzicato of the teeth snapping. The prime row is the nearest possible to the original theme: Bb, Ab, F, Eb, B, C, E, G, Db, D, Gb.A, but I have followed the contours of the main themes. Blues Whale is a pavane, a slow, stately processional incorporating the typical renaissance drum rhythm. and using a blues scale, G, A, Bb, C, C#, D, F, G, and an implied 12-bar minor blues harmony.
