The piece was composed as an étude to practice the technique of circular breathing. It has a single movement divided into five long phrases. The title is a metaphor for the form of the piece and also for the way the sounds are normally produced on the flute, where landscapes are represented by the musical phrases that contain sounds that “float” in the air in a flow that is produced and controlled by the performer. However “floating” also has connotations with something that circulates, e.g. an idea, providing an analogy to circular breathing. There are no bar lines in the piece. The rhythmic combinations have a freer, asymmetrical flow as they follow the internal structure of each phrase. The piece explores various nuances of dynamics (from ppp to f) in a slow rubato tempo, with a predominance of softer sounds. The piece aims at increasing the performer’s awareness of applying circular breathing over large intervals, and at developing the phrase building logic and its application.

It's a Saturday morning. After a busy and hectic week, you have nothing scheduled. Your wife and kids are happily occupied with things that don't involve you. Time to mentally check out, retreat to the man cave and find something to do that doesn't involve anything other than what is physically in front of you. On the radio in the background, there are some old blokes musing laconically about football. You don't really know what you'll be doing, but it will involve tools and not giving a flip about anything else for a little while. You may even need to make a trip to the hardware store at some stage... who knows? Tooling-a-Round is the first movement of what is (planned to be) a multi-movement work for concert band, depicting the cherished role of backyard shed in the life of a typical suburban middle-aged family man. Quavers are to be played rhythmically swung, with articulations observed whole-heatedly to highlight the playful and irreverent mood throughout - staccato markings in particular are to be exaggerated. The sound of real tools should be used in the percussion parts where indicated (e.g. saw, file, hammer, toolbox, circular saw, power drill etc.) with rhythms to be approximated in order to give the impression of a project getting underway as the piece progresses and the protagonist meanders from one task to the next.This piece is dedicated to busy fathers who work hard to preserve their capacity to create, play and explore.

The main theme is a connected line ascending through the most lyrical range of the instrument; in between theme statements are quasi-polyphonic lines which use the full range of the tuba to create the illusion of bass, harmony, and melody. The singsong nature of the theme invites rubato interpretation, and expressive annotations throughout the score encourage this further. A majestic theme appears briefly towards the end of the work, which the player should clearly convey as a brilliant and triumphal outcry. The Pledge is a noble contribution to the values and standards of American citizenship and has been recited daily in classrooms and public events for over a century. Regardless of periods of national strife and perilous times, it stands as a symbol of goodness, hope, opportunity, and freedom, with liberty and justice for all. In 1952 the Pledge was changed to add the words “under God.†A debate about the appropriateness of including these words because of the division of church and state remains, however, this setting includes options for both possibilities in favor of freedom of choice for all Americans.This arrangement is designed for school choirs and choruses of all kinds, including the higher education sector as well as civic and church. The SAB part-writing is in manageable voice ranges and not difficult to learn and perform. The original concert choir setting of this piece was performed by the world-famous Mormon Tabernacle Choir in July of 1995 on their “Music and the Spoken Word†broadcast.
