Some conductors work gregorian before affording a renaissance repertoire.I took a gregorian hymn and made a round, adding T/B voices to appear as medieval song. For converting the choir performance in a theatre performance, medieval music is a good choice.

Published by Justin M. Ryan (A0.886923). The hymn, When I Survey the Wondrous Cross, was written by Isaac Watts, and published in Hymns and Spiritual Songs in 1707. It is significant for being an innovative departure from the early English hymn style of only using paraphrased biblical texts, although the first two lines of the second verse do paraphrase St Paul at Galatians 6:14. The poetry of When I survey... may be seen as English literary baroque.[1] The hymn's fourth verse (His dying crimson...) is commonly omitted in printed versions, a practice that began with George Whitefield in 1757.[2]This arrangement is for SATB Choir and is performed at a Moderate tempo. It is broken up into 4 verses plus please watch verse 3. The Soprano melody has been slightly adjusted but still follows the same harmonic movement as in Vs. 1 and 2. Appropriate for high school choirs and up, or cathedral choirs as a Vespers anthem, this work seeks to reveal the insisting and imploring nature of the Latin text. Voicing: SATB divisi, a cappellaPaul Osborne is a choral director, tenor soloist, and composer/arranger from California's Central Coast.  He received his degree at Concordia College in Moorhead, MN, where he studied choral conducting with René Clausen.  He serves as Chorus Master for Opera San Luis Obispo and Central Coast Gilbert and Sullivan, is the founder and director of Resonance Vocal Ensemble, and is the former choral director at San Luis Obispo High School. He has been a passionate composer and arranger of choral music for over 20 years.

Written for my deceased father, I borrowed a Gregorian Chant for the Our Father prayer—a found, sacred work by Praetorius. I used three small sections of the chant but changed the text to tell my father's final story. In Christianity, taking one's life is a mortal sin, and this is my prayer to God, asking him to spare casting my father to the underworld. The work is in sonata form, and the two themes are the 'prayer' and the 'descent'.

Anton Bruckner's Virga Jesse, Motet W.A.B. 52, for 4-part Tuba Ensemble was written in 1885 as a tribute to Jesse, the father of King David. The text is based on Isaiah 11 establishing Jesus in the lineage of King David.
The music is symphonic in breadth, but also harkens back to Gregorian Chant and Renaissance polyphony. As with so much of Bruckner's music, long phrases begin softly and mysteriously, building to giant ecstatic climaxes.
Robert Coulter has beautifully arranged this work of 4 minutes in length for performers at a moderately advanced level. Parts are all in bass clef for 2 Euphoniums and 2 Tubas.

The melody we know today, was associated for the first time to the text in 1851, in a English hymnal of that year. While searching for liturgical texts associated with Pentecost, I was immediately drawn to the sequence of Veni Sancte Spiritus as an invocation of all the divine qualities that are recognized across the world’s major religions. I was particularly moved by a recording of the Gregorian chant on this text, in which groups of three phrases alternate between low and high voices. I began my own setting of the sequence by adapting many of the Gregorian chant phrases, from memory and with varying degrees of similarity to the original melody, passing them through different modal colors. I followed a similar pattern of formal alternation between high and low voices, while expanding each phrase of the chant into a two-part texture. Elements of both Late Medieval and Renaissance counterpoint are adopted in combination with more Eastern-influenced heterophony, in which two voices follow the same melodic outline with individual variations and ornamentation. As the piece progresses, overlapping duos expand into three-part and finally four-part texture. I aim to evoke a sense of connection with ancient ritual and musical forms, alongside a more modern harmonic gravity that favors certain dissonances in relationship to unisons, fifths and other “perfect†intervals.

The text begins with a joyous invitation to celebrate the Ascension in song: Be glad, all ye people, and sing our festive songs, for it is the triumph of Christ! He returns to heaven, leading thither the trophies he has won; and as he ascends, the jubilant sound of the trumpet is heard. 7 is the main rhythmic pattern of the sequence, starting from the incipit of Psalm 46 (O-mnes gen-tes, plau-di-te), but then the poet freeealy weaves among different schemes, from 4 to 8 syllables, and the composer moves it forth to rhythms which would be nowadays considered 4/4 to 11/8.
