The North Star' is a melancholy dialogue between trumpet and piano. It features a triplet motif which is developed and ornamented and is set in a moody minor key with some unexpected shifts and dissonances. the long phrases will require excellent breath control to keep them legato. The shift to the upper register climaxing with the Bb in bar 13 is very challenging. This piece needs to be played with a very bright, clear, focused sound to create the atmosphere of the lonely, icy night on the ocean.

The piece begins with unison ideas (pitch, rhythm and bowing), then begins to expand, encouraging each section to gain some independence. We reset, and expand further. This process continues until the contrapuntal lines create complex harmonic textures that travel in unexpected directions, yet make musical sense. Much like an individual’s own journey, the path taken is not always direct and clear, but the end result is musically satisfying.Significant attention music be placed on dynamics throughout.From a technique standpoint, this work asks the most of the bass section. The shifting requests in the other sections are minimal, although there are sufficient opportunities to shift should student and/or teacher choose. Bow placement and control, tone production and ensemble balance are where much of the focused work will be required from students.

In 1982, the Vladimir Ilyich Lenin Nuclear Power Plant started a series of tests to simulate an electrical power outage to help create procedures for maintaining the circulation of the reactor coolant for the 60-75 seconds needed until the back-up generators got to full power. This was key to ensure that the coolant pumps did not stop working; otherwise, it could lead to the core overheating or, worse, the core melting down. The first test was unsuccessful, and, after some modifications, the test was repeated in 1984 and 1985. On 25 April 1986, a fourth test was scheduled to take place at 1415hrs during a controlled power-down of one of the reactors. However, at 1400hrs, another regional power station went offline, causing the test to be delayed by 10-hours. With the well-prepared day and evening crews’ shifts over, the test was left to the unprepared night crew. Unbeknownst to them, safety systems and protocols had been disabled or ignored earlier in the day, power-output issues had left the reactor in an unstable condition and there were basic design flaws with the reactor when it was constructed. All of this led to an uncontrolled chain reaction and, at some point around 01:23:45 in the morning of 26 April 1986, explosions and a fire destroyed a reactor building of reactor number 4 at Chernobyl. Radioactive contamination was released into the surrounding areas, 100,000s of people were evacuated, a 30-kilometre exclusion zone was put in place and whilst, officially, only 31 people died from this disaster, it has been estimated that between 4,000 and 16,000 fatalities are related to the events of that day. The area is likely to be unsafe for the next 20,000 years. The soundtrack to the TV mini-series Chernobyl is by the Icelandic composer, Hildur Guðnadóttir. The music is made, almost entirely, from sounds that she recorded at a decommissioned Nuclear power plant in Lithuania, giving it a very raw quality. She says the show itself portrays the disaster with respect and realism, and I was adamant the score reflects this. I wanted to show the viewer how it would feel to be there, and to tell this story of fear, loss and, ultimately, human error. Vichnaya Pamyat translated to Memory Eternal in Ukrainian, but a better English equivalent would be Rest in Peace. It is a hymn used during Ukrainian Orthodox Christian church funerals and memorial services. Guðnadóttir’s arrangement is heard at the end of the final episode of the series. This arrangement is in the original key. A transposed version, making it easier to play, is available, item number H0.1100563-SC004126925. The arrangement also includes alternative parts for tenor horn, treble-clef trombone/euphonium and tuba. Radioactive contamination was released into the surrounding areas, 100,000s of people were evacuated, a 30-kilometre exclusion zone was put in place and whilst, officially, only 31 people died from this disaster, it has been estimated that between 4,000 and 16,000 fatalities are related to the events of that day. The area is likely to be unsafe for the next 20,000 years. The soundtrack to the TV mini-series Chernobyl is by the Icelandic composer, Hildur Guðnadóttir. The music is made, almost entirely, from sounds that she recorded at a decommissioned Nuclear power plant in Lithuania, giving it a very raw quality. She says the show itself portrays the disaster with respect and realism, and I was adamant the score reflects this. I wanted to show the viewer how it would feel to be there, and to tell this story of fear, loss and, ultimately, human error. Vichnaya Pamyat translated to Memory Eternal in Ukrainian, but a better English equivalent would be Rest in Peace. It is a hymn used during Ukrainian Orthodox Christian church funerals and memorial services. Guðnadóttir’s arrangement is heard at the end of the final episode of the series. This arrangement is not in the original key and has been transposed to make it easier to play. A version in the original key is available, item number H0.1099667-SC004126925. The arrangement also includes alternative parts for tenor horn, treble-clef trombone/euphonium and tuba. No fast notes across strings or trills. A minimum of accidentals. These three pieces use tightly controlled rhythms, intervals, and melodic fragments, to create a maximum of symphonic euphony through the combination of just a few musical elements. The audio clip is the complete suite. This work can be the centerpiece of a concert for a youth orchestra, a community group, or a high school ensemble. The phrases are not longer than 4 notes, many are two-note groups, making the choices for bowings much easier than longer strings of notes. Each part has the first movement on page one, the second movement on two facing pages, and the third one the last page, making for easy organization of music onstage and in rehearsal. The first, “Diffusa est gratia is from Psalm 44:3 and ascribes to Mary a fullness of grace that is a common theme in Marian feasts. The second, Senex puerum portabat,†is more particularly relevant to the story of the infant Jesus and the ancient holy man Simeon found in today’s gospel. Singing two texts within one piece was common in Medieval music, where the interest lay on the juxtaposition of the texts and the interplay between them. Erik’s setting is influenced by both late Medieval and Renaissance choral styles. Each singer has long flowing lines that combine in duets, trios, and full quartet, yielding a variety of textures. Dissonant intervals are treated freely as was common in the late Medieval period before the tight control of the high Renaissance style. This expanded palette allows for more modern harmony that shifts in and out and resolves into consonant intervals at the end of phrases. Rhythmic syncopation and complexity were highly valued in the late Medieval style as they are again today; here they provide forward momentum. Together, these elements define a sensibility that is both ancient and new, influenced by practices of composers from the 14th and 15th centuries as well as more modern composers such as Moondog and Meredith Monk.

Published by Phil Beaman (A0.844624). The Man That Got Away is a repertoire standard that was written for Judy Garland and later recorded by Frank Sinatra. I wrote this version for one of my students who was auditioning to get into an Arts School. She was not a singer and not going into a vocal programme, but was required to do a vocal piece anyway as part of the audition process. Thus I have kept the vocal range limited to a comfortable 10th, from A4 to C5; most of it between Middle C and the next C. Further, this student had severe asthma and thus poor breath control. So I wrote this arrangement with short phrases, lots of caesurae, breath marks, rests, rubato, and a piano interlude just past the middle. The interest lies in the constantly shifting moods from swagger, to blues, to smoky jazz, to angry declarations, to wistful melancholy, to chanted recitation, to expressive rubato. This is underscored by a piano part which incorporates all of the above into a contemporary jazz style of rich extended chords. But you won't be thinking of any of these things when you perform this stunning piece because it just all works together to create a fresh, jazzy twist to this old classic.P.S. The Pavanne is stately and spare, with a reiterated opening theme. It develops contrapuntally, employing gentle dissonances which lend an edge to the slightly medieval sound of the duet. Tag for Two is a rambunctious dialogue in which the two players rarely wait for the other to finish before joining in. The clever interplay is occasionally interrupted by chromatic passages in rhythmic unison, usually in thirds, but once at the tritone. The title stems from the delightfully twisted use of the classic song Tea for Two in the second half of the duet. The two duets are playable in 1st through 3rd position. The Pavanne is an excellent piece for tone color and control. Tag for Two features meter changes and shifting rhythmic patterns as well as the melodic and harmonic use of tritones. These are contemporary duets that are enjoyable to play and hear!
