This Quick-Step piece was recorded by Judy Garland in 1943 by Decca Records on her Second Souvenir album.The quickstep is a light-hearted dance of the standard ballroom dances. The movement of the dance is fast and powerfully flowing and sprinkled with syncopations. The upbeat melodies that quickstep is danced to make it suitable for both formal and informal events. Quickstep was developed in the 1920s in New York City and was first danced by Caribbean and African dancers. Its origins are in combination of slow foxtrot combined with the Charleston, a dance which was one of the precursors to what today is called swing dancing.This dance gradually evolved into a very dynamic one with much movement on the dance floor, with many advanced patterns including hops, runs, quick steps with much momentum, and rotation. The tempo of quickstep dance is rather brisk, as it was developed to ragtime era jazz music, which is fast-paced when compared to other dance music.The quickstep is elegant like the foxtrot and should be smooth and glamorous. The dancers should appear to be very light on their feet. It is very energetic and form-intensive. The quickstep is danced to 4/4 music of 48-52 measures per minute.

It includes a harp, drums and whispered voices. SLIP JIG SHENANIGAN, for Piano Quartet (piano, violin, viola, cello) is a joyful, stylized jig in a form known in Ireland as a slip jig. Almost all Irish jigs are in 6/8 meter, or three and three, as Irish musicians often say. But a slip jig is in 9/8 meter, or three and three and three, with specific jig dances to go with slip jigs. While members of your audience probably won't stand up and start dancing a jig, they almost certainly will smile, bob their heads, tap their feet, and maybe even clap. SLIP JIG SHENANIGAN is less than two and a half minutes long, and as such, could be a great concert opener, or an encore. Enjoy!

Be sure to observe the accelerandos, broadening tempos, a tempos, legatos, and staccatos. They all have much to do with delivering the style of this piece, especially the off beat la-las. Some pairs are staccato, in other pairs, the first la is legato, the second la is staccato.The metronome marks more accurately describe the accelerandos and broadenings. On the repeat at 11, a slight increase in the tempo will add urgency and intensity. Keep the melody prominent as it moves to different voices, beginning at 37.
