The concept for this piece is to restore the voice of millions silenced by the horrific experience we now call the Holocaust, through the sounds of musical instruments that survived. One thing is clear: the genocide of the Jews was an appalling blow to the human race; one that left a permanent stain on both the perpetrators and enablers, those who stood by without uttering a word of protest. A terrible Night descended upon the world, yet, the breaking Dawn that followed was glorious, indeed. The price to save civilization in the 20th century was appallingly high. Although we must remain ever vigilant, the Jewish people today have a proud homeland—and their magnificent contributions to humanity are universally celebrated.The piece opens with the descent of the seemingly benign curtain of night. Premonitions arise but the darkness continues to descend, over and over again. Finally, chaos ensues and runs its ghastly course before dissipating. The inevitable dawn begins to break, although the curtain of night continues to threaten. Dawn is characterized by two contrasting melodies. One, a stalwart tune that marches ever forward, while the second, more questioning tune appears independently. After their separate statements, the two powerfully join forces to bring this work to a hopeful close, followed by a quiet “Amen.†This item is the score only. Beginning with the sounds of dusk, the whispered words blend with insect sounds. The modal aleatoric passages create an atmosphere of echoing bells as voices overlap. As night passes into day, the modality changes and the insect night sounds shift to the dawn chorus of birds. Born in about 1343 in Norwich, England, Julian survived the Black Plague as a girl of six. She became an anchoress at St. Julian’s Church in Norwich where she lived in prayerful seclusion. In 1373, she became very sick at age 30. When Julian was near the point of death, a curate showed her a crucifix for comfort. She then experienced a series of intense visions of Christ and recovered from her illness to write eloquently about her “shewings.†Her beautiful Medieval English words reassure us with the hope that our faith in God is our light in times of trouble. This piece depicts the dawn of the day and of the year. Beltaine, the joyous celebration of spring’s warmth and wealth of flowers and new greenery, occurs on the first day of May. The longest day of the year and the shortest night mark the Summer Solstice-Midsummer. Since long before Shakespeare’s funny and lyrical play A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the Summer Solstice has been associated with magic.Lughnasadh, on August 1st, is the festival of the first harvest. For The Holly King, modal and traditional versions of the carol The Holly and the Ivy, were used because of the lyrics’ references to the rising of the sun, and the running of the deer.

A setting of a very powerful poem by English poet, Ted Hughes, about the onset of autumn in an English (Yorkshire) garden and the surrounding countryside. It is full of pathos and passion, harmony and dissonance, chaos and peace - just like English weather!This is a very individual and innovative choral setting of Hughes' poem which is, itself, rich in 'meaty' metaphor and colour - and the composer is a vegetarian! It evokes a savage Nature within a savage landscape where humans and animals compete for space and for food. It is October, the fields and woods and gardens of rural Yorkshire are readying themselves for the cold and desolation (and despair) of winter which isn't far away in time. 'A glass, half-filled with wine, left out(side) To the dark heaven all night, by dawn Has dreamed a premonition of ice across its eye as if the ice-age had begun its heave.' That is only two and a half stanzas but you see from these lines that there are veiled threats of (Nature's) violence in the heavy tread of the poet's slowly-building angst over what is happening in the surrounding countryside - and his fear grows, and his awe grows, with every line. There is even fear underlining the very last line: 'And now it is about to start.' Winter is creeping closer and closer towards the house and it will not be pleasant to experience!I have tried to instil a little of this in the music which keeps skidding from consonance to dissonance and back to consonance. Sometimes the dissonance piles up, like snow driven by the wind piles up into deep banks; sometimes the music relaxes into stillness and calm (painted in tonal music) like a crisp, mild late autumn or early winter's day when the sun warms the landscape and life appears bearable, tolerable. I hope this adds to the song's 'charm'. It wasn't easy to write: sometimes the right music was elusive. The music ends with the word 'October' repeated three times, with voices overlapping in a little canon. Published by Michael E. Ropp (A0.971687). I Stand the Watch Before the Dawn is a dramatic piece for SATB choir and tenor and soprano soloists, for the season of Advent. The piece begins with the solo tenor and piano, in which the tenor plays the part of the night watchman and expresses longing for the light, and anguish at the condition of the people in the darkness. The tenor solo ends with the words Why have you forsaken us? The choir then enters a cappella (in performance, the choir can be doubled on organ using soft strings if necessary--it's difficult for the choir to get its starting pitches), and a soaring solo soprano provides the answer: the Light has come, but more than that, You were never alone; you are never alone; you will never be alone. One staging idea for this piece is to have the solo tenor up front, and the choir and soprano unseen in the rear, especially if there is a rear balcony that will hold the choir. However it is staged, this piece provides worshipers with a powerful and unforgettable reassurance that they do not face their darkest hours alone.
