Des Press #6598291. Published by Des Press (A0.977362). I Put a Spell on You was originally a refined love song written by Jalacy Screamin' Jay Hawkins . In 1956, he recorded the notorious version upon which this arrangement is based. Notorious because he didn't even remember recording it and the single was banned from many radio stations. I Put a Spell on You didn't even make the charts but still sold more than a million copies and is considered one of the greatest Rock and Roll tracks of all time. It all sort of just fell in place. I found out I could do more destroying a song and screaming it to death.This arrangement for string quartet is a relatively straight-forward idiomatic transcription in the same tonality as the original recording, so you could even play along with it for fun. In this case, since standard notation has certain limitations, it is recommended that the 1st violin and viola players listen to the original track to find out how their notes were performed and work out their own interpretations. Strillato means ranting-ly, screamingly, but a mere word is not enough. The level is on the easier side of advanced; quickly rehearsed by professional quartets and an accessible challenge for experienced students. Waaa-aa-o-oo!

This much-demanded re-issue marks 100 years of that iconic dance, The Charleston, from the Broadway show Runnin' Wild (1923), which entered the public domain in 2019. Indiana and I Wonder Where My Baby Is Tonight are staples of the 1920's canon. These original arrangements are not based on previously-existing versions, although Indiana is mashed up with interpolations of a well-known work from the late 18th-century.... Published by Des Press (A0.977359). Abba released Take a Chance on Me - from ABBA: The Album - in January 1978 and it became one of their biggest hits. Influences from this track can be heard in the charts through the following decade and beyond. Needless to say, it remains popular today. As usual with ABBA tracks, the sound production is a work of art in itself: Myriad small details are woven into the tapestry of this high-energy song, such as an audacious one-note string arrangement, a baritone saxophone, state-of-the-art (at the time) synthesized effects and sophisticated multi-voice overdubbing which includes a less-than-perfect layer that may not be obvious but adds to the character and makes listeners more comfortable singing along, The guitar has awesome sustain, sounding almost Hawaiian, with some very slick licks in-between. This arrangement for string quartet cannot boast such complexity in four parts but tips its hat at what details can be squeezed into an idiomatic transcription. As usual in this series from Des Press, the all-important bass-line is used, giving the cellist a chance to shine as a throbbing groove-machine. This arrangement is in the same tonality as the original recording, so you could even play along for fun. It was released in 2001 and charted at number one in 40 countries. Can't Get You out of My Head is an example of a perfect pop song. Classified by some as Neo-Disco, it draws heavily on influences from Trance and Electronic Dance Music (EDM) styles but with its own twists, making the heavily synthesized production sound both fresh and familiar. The melodies and lyrics sound deceptively simple and the hook is just la la la. All of this is again matched perfectly with the performer; Minogue's veneer of naïve vacuity that belies the consummate behind. In addition to all this, the entire main vocal part fits in the five-note starting position for piano students - c, d, e, f, g - making this song an absolute gift for music teachers. Well, 20-odd years ago at least. This arrangement for String Quintet is a relatively straight-forward idiomatic transcription in the same tonality as the original recording, so you could even play along with it for fun. The Basler Fasnacht, known locally in Basel Stadt (CH) as D’ drey scheenschte Dääg (the three loveliest days), is a world-famous carnival where the Zeitgeist animates centuries of tradition. Local folks celebrate together with a good-humoured satire of current events through costumes, masks, poetry and visual art on carnival floats and lanterns. Amongst many other activities, participants decorate the city and open ad-hoc bars to sustain everyone with drinks and characteristic foods, all of which led to the Basler Fasnacht being included on the Unesco Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2017. Central to the whole experience is the music played on the streets, without electronic amplification, by two types of group: Gugge, with brass and percussion and Clique, with piccolos and side-drums made and played according to local custom. Symphonie Fastnachtique, part 1 contains four melodies from the Cliques: Der Arabi Nr 1, 2 and 3, followed by the Wettstein Marsch by Swiss composer Hermann Huber (1870-1926). The melodies in Der Arabi may sound familiar but the chances are that they pre-date their more famous versions. For example, Der Arabi Nr 1 is now better known as The British Grenadiers from the early 1700s but can be traced as far back as the 1560s, when the Basler Fasncacht was already centuries old and the Schweizerpfeife (Swiss Flute), with drums, supplied the de rigueur regimental music for foot-soldiers all over Europe. This version for string quartet is a mixture of original piccolo voicings and indulgence by the arranger. Some of the part for viola is based on an optional 4th voice, the Zierstimm. Fasnacht is a glorious celebration laced with a melancholy reflected by the marching tempi of the Cliques: often slower than 90 BPM. A standard march is around 120 BPM. Vyyl Gniege! (Enjoy!)

It is possible that it took less time to put this song together than the legal teams needed to negotiate the distribution of royalties because it contains two interpolations, or re-recorded samples from other works. The more familiar of these is the bridge, interpolated from I Will Survive (by Dino Fekaris, Frederick Perren) first sung by Gloria Gaynor. The other is the main string riff, which is interpolated from music to the 1970 French-Italian film Dernier domicile connu (Last Known Address) composed by François de Roubaix. The rap section after the bridge is replaced with an excerpt from this. Otherwise, this arrangement for string quartet is a relatively straight-forward idiomatic transcription in the same tonalities as the original recording, so you could even play along with it for fun. The saxophone section needs flute, clarinet and bass clarinet, with only one alto and one tenor sax. The solo trumpet part is quite easy, spanning one octave; f-f'. The written-out jazz solo is not as difficult as it looks but nevertheless a bit more challenging. An easier solo can be written or improvised to be as difficult as the player dares, or given to someone else. The level is on the easier side of intermediate. Kids' Song was written in the mid- 1990s, apparently after listening to a lot of Isaac Hayes as an antidote to the then-ubiquitous Britpop and EDM. The style is a bit commercial and unashamedly schmaltzy - as you might find in a Broadway show from the time. The harmonies are like recently-poured cornflakes; slushy but slightly crunchy in places - and there's a funky middle section, as if you've mashed in a banana with maple syrup and Tabasco on it or something. Kids' Song was conceived as part of the obscure musical about the fortunes of a banjo-playing flapper from Burnley, Fifi Braithwaite, but dropped for stylistic reasons because the show was set in the late 1920s/ early 1930s. The sentiment is We're hungry. Why can't adults just be nice?.
