The final movement in a collection of three pieces for piano. This piece serves as a resolution to the previous movement, the nocturne. It begins with a series of repetitive notes and chords that is at first a bit unpredictable as to where it is headed. It then moves to a somewhat formless and disjointed melody with frequently changing time signatures but then quickly transforms into a cheerful and resolute theme, then a brief aside that allows the performer to show off his technical skills, and then back to the determined and driven, yet cheerful theme that concludes the cycle with a happy ending.

With the long pianissimo to forte crescendo at the introduction, the contrasting forte/mezzo piano sections and brisk, shorter crescendos for the cadences, the tubist must be aware of dynamics at all time and use them wisely.The second aspect to performing this piece is to contrast the 2 eighth note plus quarter note slurs motif against the arpeggiations. The introduction starts with the slurs and evolves into the arpeggiations by the first forte and the remaining piece explores the contrast between the two. Performers should feel free to try different dynamics, try different tempos (like zipping through the arpeggiations and slowing for the motif), etc. The goal is to bring the listener through the pleasantries of introductions to feel fresh and eager for further discourse ahead. March The rewarding challenge in this piece is to bring out the difference between cheery and con brio. The former being achieved by emphasizing the swaggering, strutting feel of the one-measure-per-beat feel and the latter by emphasizing the intervallic bounciness with the one-two march feel.Note that the motif (with the quarter note morphing into an eighth note) along with simpler arpeggiations are brought to play in a new manner reinforcing the positive mood from the prelude.The goal is to befriend the listener with an engaging, buoyant time. Air The tubist will exercise great breath control and phrasing to achieve a sublime solemnness counterbalancing the prior two movements.The motif now takes center stage headlining the main melodic phrases; however, here it is disjointed and conveys the sighing for the solemnness.After the pleasantness of the march, affableness having garnered friendship, we now open ourselves to share some somber matters and offer consolation. The intended goal here is to add depth to the relationship by addressing darker aspects in the discourse. Slip-jig Rondo Harking back to the compound meter of the prelude, this dance adventurously wakens the listener from the solemnness of the air asserting a new grandness and gladness. This is a slip-jig put into the rondo form so celebrate the main dance theme when it comes around and put fire and character into the transitions to make it worthwhile.The motif now jumps into the compound meter’s beat and morphs into three slurred, conjoint eighth notes. Now this motif enables several affects: exciting dance steps, transitions/modulations and concluding the phrases and the piece itself.The performer should aim to lead and amaze the listener with the waltz-like slip-jig rhythm and astound with the virtuosic transitions as a final send-off.

The introduction and ending have no resemblance to the main body of the piece. Imagine here introductions and preparations made before the actual performance begins. The overall mood is fun and entertaining with a slight sense of trepidation. The continuous semiquaver movements denote the continuous back and forth repetition of the swinging of the trapeze, where the slightly disjointed melody gives a feeling of anticipation. What is coming next? How high? How fast? The conclusion imitates the introduction, very slightly changed, as this time we have dismounting and taking bows.Hopefully both the performers and audience will feel somewhat uplifted.

The first movement, caffeinated, is bright and upbeat; the second movement, half-calf; is disjointed; while the final movement, decaf, is quite mellow. The Lacrimosa (Latin for weeping/tearful), also a name that derives from Our Lady of Sorrows, a title given to The Virgin Mary, is part of the Dies Irae sequence in the Roman Catholic Requiem Mass. Its text comes from the Latin 18th and 19th stanzas of the sequence. Lacrimosa dies illa Qua resurget ex favilla Judicandus homo reus. Huic ergo parce, Deus: Pie Jesu Domine, Dona eis requiem. Amen. Full of tears will be that day When from the ashes shall arise The guilty man to be judged; Therefore spare him, O God, Merciful Lord Jesus, Grant them eternal rest. Amen. The piece begins piano on a rocking rhythm in 12/8, intercut with quarter rests, which will be reprised after two bars, on Lacrimosa dies illa (This tearful day). Then follows a diatonic progression, in disjointed eighth-notes on the text resurget (will be reborn), then legato and chromatic on a powerful crescendo. The music is forte by bar 8, at which point Mozart's contribution to the movement is interrupted by his death. Süssmayr brings the music to a reference of the Introit and ends on an Amen cadence. Discovery of a fragmentary Amen fugue in Mozart's hand has led to speculation that it may have been intended for the Requiem. Indeed, many modern completions (such as Levin's) complete Mozart's fragment. Some sections of this movement are quoted in the Requiem mass of Franz von Suppé, who was a great admirer of Mozart. Ray Robinson, the music scholar and president (from 1969 to 1987) of the Westminster Choir College, suggests that Süssmayr used materials from Credo of one of Mozart's earlier masses, Mass in C major, K. 220 Sparrow in completing this movement.

Published by Robert Delfausse (A0.766953). This is the slow movement from my Sonata for Flute, Cello, and Guitar, which I wrote for the wonderful trio Tritonis. The 10/8 time signature allows the musicians to play in either 5/4 (5 quarter-note beats) or a 10/8 that divides the bar into two groups of 5 eighth notes. For most of the piece, the musicians play in these opposing meters at the same time. If you listen to the MP3 on this website, I think you'll find that the effect is not at all disjointed, and actually heightens the lyricism of the music. The piece is suitable for advanced or professional musicians. Duration: 4 minutes, 53 seconds.

Fairy tales were however also a source of unrest for me as a seismograph of mankind’s underlying primal fears and desires. So as a performer and composer I have always felt that Robert Schumann’s Märchenerzählungen [Fairy Tales] (scored for the same instrumentation as my own composition) was a disjointed, complex contemporary work – despite the innocence and naivety of its initial appearance. I therefore do not intend my own Es war einmal … [Once upon a time …] to be a mere sentimental, nostalgic flight into the distant past, but as a naive and fantastical alternative concept to our genuine world with all its upheavals.
