Even our sports, like baseball and football, are following these new trends. For instance, hyper-speed cameras are being used for instant replay to better officiate games. New sports all together have been birthed from the all-mighty internet. I am speaking of course, of Drone Racing. A drone is a small, four-propellered flying machine. The newest racing units are reaching speeds upwards of 100mph! What started out as a YouTube video is now a multi-million-dollar industry and soon-to-be televised sport. In this piece, I am attempting to tap into the fast-paced and energetic curiosity as to where this sport could end up.This piece premiered on March 15th, 2017 in Stamps Auditorium at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and was part of the CoLab Concert Series between student composers and the studios of cello, oboe, voice, and piano.More arrangements and originals by JP Wogaman II can be found at www.wogamusic.com

This arrangement holds personal significance, as it was written when my father was very ill—it was his favorite song, especially near the end of his life. The piece starts quietly with an introduction that gradually builds with brass fanfares and woodwind flourishes, emulating both the calm and struggles of youth. The somber mood continues as sustained drones support the iconic melody, echoing in the distance and symbolizing the complex journey of finding one’s path in life. A flowing, calm chromatic section represents a joyous period, which then abruptly shifts to a tumultuous descent. This resolves into a quiet and peaceful conclusion, reflecting ultimate resolution and acceptance. This touching piece will engage audiences and will be a welcome addition to any performance. This piece was first printed in 1788 although the author himself acknowledged that its origins lie in an earlier Scots-language ballad printed in 1711 by James Wilson.In this graceful arrangement, we hear the standard English version of the text set to a traditional Scottish melody. Sopranos and altos predominate in the four verses, sometimes in unison and, at times, underpinned by a Scottish sounding drone. Der Leiermann (The Organ Grinder)This is the final song in Schubert’s Winterreise song cycle, and tells the story of a poet encountering a hurdy-gurdy player busking in the snow. An atmosphere of absolute bleakness and despair should be conjured up by any performance of this song, as the song’s main character completes his lonely ‘winter’s journey’ and deterioration of his mental state. The chromatic grace notes in the introduction are supposed to represent the sound of a hurdy-gurdy being warmed up, and the open A string played thereafter is meant to evoke the hurdy-gurdy’s drone strings; so ensure it is allowed to ring clearly whilst playing the main figure on the higher strings. The guitar part is relatively simple, but it needs to be played with absolute precision and dynamic control; the extensive use of the open position allows the guitar’s natural resonance to come through. This classic Schubert song has been arranged for voice and acoustic guitar in order to provide an alternative accompaniment option for singers who want to perform Schubert’s lieder with guitar instead of piano.

Jancaitis, director.The work is a cantata consisting of an instrumental sinfonia followed by choral settings of three poems by neo-Latin poetJakob Balde, S.J. (1604–68), hailed as the Horace of Germany and considered one of the greatest Latin poets of any era.In the case of the three poems selected, Balde’s vivid imagery and mastery of Latin poetics are put in service of religiousexpression. The poems are filled with countless allusions to the classical poetic tradition; notably, he creates a strongcorrelation between the Virgin Mary of his Christian tradition (Balde was a Jesuit priest) and the goddesses invoked inclassical Latin poetry. Thus, Balde uses the older forms to express something that was, for him, contemporary andrelevant. (An analogue to this use of language is the idea of creating new music to be played on period instruments.)The opening sinfonia begins with an ascending pattern of triads, which returns throughout the work. The forwardmomentum is interrupted several times before the movement settles tonally. The first choral movement employs abouncy momentum to set the celebratory poem on the Virgin’s assumption. The second movement is a prayerful song onthe acceptance of death; it is spare and meditative, unfolding as a series of sectional canons over several drones. The finalmovement returns to the celebratory spirit of the opening; this time, instead of the Virgin’s journey, the poem describesthe speaker’s journey and compares a purposeful sea voyage to a directed life.Balde’s poems are provided in their original Latin and in two translations. One is a free translation in rhyming poeticEnglish created by James J. Mertz, S.J., longtime professor at Loyola University. The other is a newly-created literaltranslation by Edward J. Vodoklys, S.J., Senior Lecturer in Classics at the College of the Holy Cross.Carson P. It is suggested that 16–24 singers be employed (no fewer than 12).As with much early repertoire, dynamic and expressive markings are kept to a minimum. It is expected thatdirector and performers will inflect lines expressively and naturally. The organ part is notated for a small portatiforgan with pull-down pedal (with no independent pedal stops). If played on a larger instrument, this smallerregistration plan should be kept in mind so as to create balance with the instruments and choir.
