Edward Taylor Paull (1858-1924) was an American composer of marches and rags who was successful in producing a large number of circus marches in the late 1800’s/early 1900’s. His “Dawn of the Century March†welcomed in the then-brand new Twentieth Century.This arrangement has been prepared for the instrumentation of Alford’s “Hungry Five†polka band books and serves as a fine addendum to those familiar pieces.  While the clarinet parts tend to be the most active, they often feature diatonic scalar patterns that remain accessible to most intermediate-level players. Though the trumpet part does sneak up to some written high A’s and B-flats during the first strain, the remainder of the piece doesn’t surpass the G on top of the staff. At the risk of sounding sloppy, it may be better to take the tempo a little lesser than a circus march tempo to accommodate. Besides, if playing this piece to accompany Polka dancing, it would be best to take this at a more danceable tempo anyway.This downloadable PDF package contains a full score and a set of parts that are ready to go for adding some extra variety to your German Band’s Oktoberfest OomPah gig!

Elgar later related how Jaeger had encouraged him as an artist and had stimulated him to continue composing despite setbacks. Nimrod is described in the Old Testament as a mighty hunter before the Lord, Jäger being German for hunter. In 1904 Elgar told Dora Penny (Dorabella) that this variation is not really a portrait, but the story of something that happened. Once, when Elgar had been very depressed and was about to give it all up and write no more music, Jaeger had visited him and encouraged him to continue composing. He referred to Ludwig van Beethoven, who had a lot of worries, but wrote more and more beautiful music. And that is what you must do, Jaeger said, and he sang the theme of the second movement of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 8 Pathétique. Elgar disclosed to Dora that the opening bars of Nimrod were made to suggest that theme. Can't you hear it at the beginning? Only a hint, not a quotation. This variation has become popular in its own right and is sometimes used at British funerals, memorial services, and other solemn occasions. It is always played at the Cenotaph, Whitehall in London at the National Service of Remembrance. The “Nimrod” variation was the final orchestral composition (before the national anthem) played by the Greek National Orchestra in a televised June 2013 concert, before the 75-year-old Athenian ensemble was dissolved in the wake of severe government cutbacks. An adaptation of the piece appears at the ending of the 2017 film Dunkirk in the score by Hans Zimmer. This arrangement for Flex-Band has been adapted to suit the instrumentalists. The key has changed and this makes it much more playable and more secure.

Sir Edward Elgar’s Variations on an Original Theme, commonly known as Enigma Variations, may be the most wonderful musical tribute to friendship ever composed. Each of the fourteen variations is headed with initials or a code name of a family member or friend, with the last one being Elgar himself. The best known variation is the ninth, entitled Nimrod. It represents Augustus Jaeger, Elgar’s close friend and editor at his publisher Novello & Company. In the Bible, Nimrod is referred to as “the mighty hunter”, thus identifying with Jaeger (Jäger), meaning “hunter” in German. The stately and serene variation expresses the depth of the composer’s feelings for his friend, and is often performed separately on solemn occasions. This arrangement is based on the original orchestral score, and Elgar’s own piano reduction, both published by Novello in 1899. Technically it is not too difficult, though with some double stopping to complete the harmonies and for fullness of sound.CYPRESS PUBLISHING is pleased to be the imprint for arrangements for string ensemble by Stephen Levintow. Edward Taylor Paull (1858-1924) was an American composer of marches and rags who was successful in producing a large number of circus marches in the late 1800’s/early 1900’s.. The Ben Hur Chariot Race March was the first publication he released in 1894. He also arranged Harry J. Lincoln's hit, Midnight Fire Alarm.These arrangements have been prepared for the instrumentation of Alford’s Hungry Five polka band books and serve as a fine addendum to those familiar pieces. While the clarinet parts tend to be the most active, they often feature diatonic scalar patterns that remain accessible to most intermediate-level players. The trombone part here is more active than many other arrangements for this kind of ensemble and could also be handled by Euphonium if desired. Again, it’s mostly short diatonic 16th note bursts. At the risk of sounding sloppy, it may be better to take the tempo a little lesser than a circus march tempo to accommodate.
