El roble y el ombú (The Oak and Embú Evergreen) is a traditional zortziko (5/8 dance rhythm of the Basque country) vidalita (a sad, romantic, popular song usually accompanied by the guitar), sung by choirs on both sides of the Atlantic, in which freedom is sung and the nostalgia for Basque emigration in those lands are recounted. The lyrics were penned by Bilboa-born journalist Felix Bilboa Garci-Arcélus (himself an emigrant to Argentina). This arrangement is for 4-part SATB ensemble with piano accompaniment. Performance time: 2:32. The lyrics are in Spanish.

Transcripción para piano solo por: JUAN CARLOS CORTÉS A. El maestro Domingo Bethancourt Mazariegos (Quetzaltenango, 1906-1980) fue un marimbista y compositor guatemalteco. Sus obras para marimba se encuentran entre las más populares de Centro américa. Para la inauguración del Ferrocarril de los Altos, Mingo (como le decÃan a Domingo Bethancourt) compuso una melodÃa con ese nombre, de tan grande éxito, que muy pronto fue grabada en Estados Unidos por la marimba Centroamericana. Un tren convertido en melodÃa inmortal El 30 de marzo de 1930 fue inaugurado el ferrocarril de Los Altos, tren eléctrico cuya vÃa conectaba a Retalhuleu con Quetzaltenango. El ambiente era festivo y en el aire vibró la melodÃa conmemorativa de un joven compositor llamado Román Domingo Bethancourt Mazariegos, UNA LEYENDA MUSICAL Campana y pito preceden a la festiva melodÃa Ferrocarril de Los Altos. Tal composición de Domingo Bethancourt surgió para celebrar el nuevo tren eléctrico de occidente. La construcción empezó en septiembre de 1924, concesionada a una firma alemana. El costo final serÃa de 8 millones de Quetzales. Empezó a funcionar el 30 de marzo de 1930, pero solo duró tres años. Problemas financieros y el fuerte invierno de 1933 golpearon el proyecto que pretendÃa extenderse al Occidente del paÃs, pero que al final fue desmantelado. ¿Cómo se financió el Ferrocarril de Los Altos? Con nostalgia, los quetzaltecos, guardan como recuerdo del Ferrocarril de Los Altos, un monumento ubicado en el Parque Guzmán, de Totonicapán y la conocida melodÃa nacional de marimba, obra de Domingo Betancourt, que lleva el nombre de este innovador proyecto.

PROGRAM NOTE: Mitch Sturman, director of the Wilson Junior High School Warrior Band in El Centro, California, has been commissioning works, both new works and modern arrangements of old works, for nine years for an annual Concert of Premieres each May. He commissioned me to arrange this military march by Juan de Arriaga for his 9th Annual Concert of Premieres for the 2015-2016 Academic year. Juan Crisóstomo Jacobo Antonio de Arriaga y Balzola (January 27, 1806 – January 17, 1826) was a Spanish Basque composer. He was nicknamed the Spanish Mozart after he died, because, like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, he was both a child prodigy and an accomplished composer who died young. They also shared the same first and second baptismal names; and they shared the same birthday, January 27 (fifty years apart). The Marcha Militar was written in 1820 when Arriaga was 14 years old. The original is scored for requinto (a small, 3/4-size guitar tuned in F, a fourth above the normal quitar), piccolo in D, two clarinets in B-flat, two small trumpets in B-flat, two large trumpets in B-flat, two bassoons in B-flat, serpent in A-flat, trombone in B-flat, triangle, chimes, cymbals, side drum, and bass drum. I have arranged the piece for a modern band of piccolo, flute, oboe, three clarinets in B-flat, bass clarinet in B-flat, alto sax in E-flat, tenor sax in B-flat, bari sax in E-flat , bassoon, French horn in F, three trumpets in B-flat, baritone horn (with parts for both bass clef and transposing B-flat treble clef),trombone, tuba, triangle, snare drum, cymblas, bass drum, and glockenspiel. As this arrangement was originally meant for a junior high school band, some notes may cause range problems for young, less experienced players. I have indicated these notes with smaller noteheads in parenthesis. While these parenthetical notes are the preferred notes, and should be played if possible, it is assumed the regular-sized note is probably the one which will probably need to be played.
