Strauss and the Dance of the Seven VeilsThe Dance of the Seven Veils is a performance by Salome before King Herod Antipas, depicted in modern stage productions, literature, and visual arts. This dance is an elaboration of the New Testament story of the Feast of Herod and the execution of John the Baptist. While the New Testament does not give the dance a name, the title Dance of the Seven Veils originated from the 1893 English translation of Oscar Wilde's French play, Salome, which included the stage direction Salome dances the dance of the seven veils. Richard Strauss also incorporated the dance into his opera Salome in 1905.The concept of Salome's dance involving seven veils can be traced back to Wilde's play, where he was influenced by earlier French writers who portrayed Salome as a symbol of female lust. Wilde envisioned the dance as an act of unveiling, symbolizing the revealing of Salome's true self. The Elf Suite is a piece for solo violin and consists of a March, Dance, Polka, and Waltz and chronicles what I believe to be the events on the day of an Elvian Ball. The March allows some improvisation in the beginning using ricochet and glissando harmonics to imitate the snoring sounds of the elves and also at the end there is improv as the march devolves into chaos. The music incorporates odd meters and scales. The Dance of the Elves was written for and premiered by Eva Ingolf in 2015 at The Composers' Forum in New York and was the first piece written of the suite and he entire Suite was premiered in Sao Paolo Brazil in 2016 by Stephanie Stasiu Bonk. The entire suite's performance takes about 11 minutes with individual dances 1 1/2 to 3 1/2 minutes in length.

The Beltane celebrations on the Hill of Uisneach in Ireland and the Edinburgh Fire Festival are long-standing and beloved. These days, Beltane has been embraced by modern witches and mystics as a celebration of the energies of Spring. You can probably find a Spring festival with a maypole and a bonfire near you. Witches celebrate Beltane on May 1st as the height of Spring. They give thanks for the fertility of our planet and the ability of the Earth to renew herself. They revel in the new growth and general fecundity of the season. As co-creators with the Universe, witches also like to tap into the energy of Spring to help them bring new life into their own endeavours.They have a maypole and a bonfire. They celebrate the sexual union of Mother Earth and Green Man. The maypole is a symbol of masculine energy which is then joyfully embraced by colourful ribbons, symbolic of the beautiful abundance and diversity of our living world.Beltane is a pagan Celtic festval, but as is their wont, the Roman Catholic Church has modified it: into May Day, with participation of priests. Even the maypole upset many Christians.The sections of the piece are: Introduction to the witches theme, Witches fly in, Witches dance round the bonfire, Maypole dance, Witches inspect the finished maypole and disperse.The witches have a ground bass. I hint at their suspected spiritual allegiance to the Devil by including an occasional diabolus in musica.The Maypole Dance tune is English seventeenth C traditional.DURATION: 4 minutes.INSTRUMENTATION: String Quartet.

The work was performed and recorded by Percy Grainger, a fact that was used as marketing on the cover of the 1918 publication by Clayton F. Summy Co., Chicago. About the work, Dett wrote:Juba is a social group-dance that involves stamping on the ground with the foot and following it with two staccato pats of the hands in two-four time. At least one-third of the dancers keep time in this way, while the others dance. Sometimes all will combine together in order to urge on a solo dancer to more frantic (and at the same time more fantastic) endeavours. The band usually consists of a single fiddler perched high on a box or table; who, forgetful of self in the rather hilarious excitement of the hour, does the impossible in the way of double stopping and bowing. Hereis a string quartet arrangement of Ice Dance, from "Edward Scissorhands," by Danny Elfman. There are two versions included, an intermediate one and a more advanced one with some challenging arpeggio runs for the viola and cello. This piece makes an ideal companion to the Introduction (Titles) from the same film, which I have also arranged for string quartet. My arrangements include bowing and fingeringsuggestions and are suitable for both student and professional ensembles.Double-stops are idiomatic and mainly added to enrich the harmony and texture,but may be dropped by less advanced groups. English • German • French.Tippett’s decision to extract the four Ritual Dances from his opera 'The Midsummer Marriage' as a self-contained concert suite reflects the fact that the medium of dance was always present in his conception of the opera. From the start, there was to be an interaction within the opera between the real world and the world of mythology, partly Greek, partly Celtic. This mythological element culminates, in the finished opera, in the 'Ritual Dances' of Acts 2 and 3. Tippett himself described his opera as ‘a kind of elaborate 'L’après midi d’un faune’, in which the 'Ritual Dances' display a powerful sexual energy, though of a very different kind from Debussy’s voluptuous langour. Composition of The Midsummer Marriage occupied Tippett for six years from 1946 to 1952. The first performance of the Ritual Dances as a concert suite was given in Basel on 13 February 1953 by the Basel Kammerorchester conducted by Paul Sacher, and preceded the premiere of the complete opera by two years. Today the Ritual Dances rival the Concerto for Double String Orchestra (ETP 1331) as Tippett’s most widely-performed orchestral work.

After a short planned tuning-break a sort of anti-climax is reached at the end, where all the building-up culminates in an almost sarcastic, morendo-like fadeout, marking the collapse of the poor soul that ultimately danced themself to death. When I first saw her dance and tumble at such a young age, I was so moved that I wrote this piece to celebrate her ability to amaze everyone with her dancing and tumbling. LILLY’S DANCE (THE TUMBLER) was originally written and arranged for a small ensemble, band, stage band or combo with flexible instrumentation so that it may be performed with only two Saxophones (Alto Sax I and Alto Sax II) and a standard backup with Piano/Keyboard, Guitar, Bass and Drums. In addition, any combo may be augmented by adding any or all of the parts included for Flute, Clarinet, Tenor Sax, and Baritone Sax. This flexible or variable instrumentation of LILLY’S DANCE (THE TUMBLER) makes it unique and perfect for schools and colleges that do not have a permanent roster of music students entering their music programs annually. It also eases the burden for Directors searching for good music to perform for groups with ever changing numbers of music students. What’s more, LILLY’S DANCE (THE TUMBLER) has a section open for solos to enable the ensemble to feature players who can improvise well enhancing not only the group’s enjoyment but also everyone’s listening pleasure. This piece is composed in the same style of the other dances in the set - all of which have been performed by College and High School students in many major concert events along the East Coast with great success. In 1906, a shorter version for piano solo was published, which uses fewer thems and omits the narration. This version uses the original 1902 version as a basis.
