Howard (A0.998749). Prelude to 1984 derives much of its musical material from the numbers 1, 9, 8 and 4. The piece is designed literally as a 'Prelude' to the first chapter of George Orwell's novel, from which it derives its programmatic detail. In a dictatorship that holds complete control over people, 'big brother' surveillance cameras watch over everyone. The main character, Winston Smith, is determined to escape this totalitarian society and find freedom. Stylistically, the piece uses a stark, angular, post-tonal idiom in order to reflect the aforementioned subject matter. However, the work remains accessible for the listener and is appropriate for higher-level pianists, including advanced students and professional players.

This famous song from Rodgers and Hammerstein's 1959 musical The Sound of Music is both well-known and inspirational, like You'll Never Walk Alone from Carousel. Oscar Hammerstein II felt that the imagery of climbing mountains and fording streams suited Maria's character, as she seeks to find her own spiritual pathway and ultimately an escape to freedom with the von Trapp family. The singing needs to be strong and uplifting too - notice how the opening melody returns in the final section transposed to a higher key. This 3-part arrangement would suit church, school and amateur choirs and the piano accompaniment supports the voices throughout. There are two layout versions - one with the piano and one with just the vocal parts.

This guitar and vocal work were originally set on the Robert Frost poem ‘Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening’, and was written for a lecture series at Boston University given by Lukas Foss entitled ‘Words on Music. Some years later I set out to publish the work and found that the estate of the late R. Frost frowned upon this particular practice and after a second failed attempt to get permission to publish the work, I decided to write my own verse for this composition (my first actually) and use a subject familiar to me, the story of Daedalus and Icarus Journey to freedom.After his arrival in Crete, Daedalus found that Minos would not let him leave. He subsequently obtained wax and feathers and fashioned wings for himself and his son Icarus. With these they succeeded in flying away, but Icarus, flying too near to the sun, melted his wings, fell into the sea near Crete, and drowned; Daedalus escaped to Italy only to fall into the hands of the local King Kokalos who drowned him in hot water. This is a piece written in 3 movements for string quartet. Challenging work that includes a variety of techniques, meter changes, dynamics from pp to ff and requires a lot of precision. Written by a Brazilian female composer. 1st movement - Dawn Colours 2nd movement - The Scape 3rd movement - Freedom This work was inspired by the story of four wild horses trapped in some sort of stable. The first movement represents the dawn and all its colors formed by the first sun rays meeting small raindrops. The second movement is about the horse’s fury and their exhausting attempt to break through barriers and escape imprisonment. The third movement is the sound of freedom, when they run wild, free and aimlessly.
