Here is the easiest lead sheet version for guitar or beginner piano of my arrangement of Round Me Falls the Night, as heard on YouTube. This beautiful evening hymn is a perfect pairing of a solemn, contemplative melody with uplifting, scriptural lyrics that remind us of the hope we have in Christ, in this life and the next. I found this song in a very old hymnbook, so old that you could feel the raised print on the page, and loved the lyrics so much! However, I felt that a minor melody would suit it in a really special way, so I rewrote it with new choral harmonization using a mixture of minor modes to match the evening mood of the song. This piece works well as a choir anthem for evensong, funerals, or for any more contemplative, low-key service, and is written in a comfortable, singable range for everyday singers. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.817619). James Alan Bland, composer of “In the Evening by the Moonlight,” was a prolific song writer. He is said to have created the words and music for more than 600 compositions. Born in 1854 to a free African American family in Flushing, New York, he made a name for himself as musician, composer and minstrel performer. Among his compositions were “Oh, Dem Golden Slippers,” “In the Morning in the Bright Light” and “De Golden Wedding.” His most famous song by far was “Carry Me Back to Old Virginny,” which the State of Virginia used as its official anthem for over 50 years. Bland, in keeping with his persona as a minstrel, wrote the lyrics to “In the Evening by the Moonlight” in dialect. Years passed and sensitivities changed, but the song’s poignant melody and basic sentiment survived. Latter day recordings, such as those by Bing Crosby and the Ray Charles Singers, dropped the dialect and objectionable terms. One of the most notable versions was by singer, pianist and civil rights activist Nina Simone, released in 1960 on the album Nina at Newport. This brass quintet version begins with the group instrumentally humming along under an eight-measure Horn in F introduction. The first statement of the melody initially takes the form of a partial call-and-response between a Trombone/Horn duo and Trumpet 1, then switches to an exchange between Trumpet 1 and Tuba. Next, the melody is repeated but in a rhythmic pattern reminiscent of the 1880 tune “Here Dem Bells”; Tuba plays counterpoint. Third time around, the melody is presented almost exactly as Bland wrote it and as Hitchcock’s Music Store published it in 1880. Finally, the tempo slows and the melody is presented as so many have sung it around campfires at YMCA, 4-H and other youth camps all over the country: softly and tenderly. The arrangement ends with a brief recapitulation of the introduction. There are no really difficult or tricky rhythms in this arrangement. Trumpet 1’s highest note, which occurs in Section D, is A above its staff; Tuba’s lowest, G below the staff. Otherwise, there are no exceptionally high or low notes. The piece opens in the key of F major then, about halfway through, changes to G major. Tempo opens with a suggested MM of 104, speeds up to 120, slows to 66, increases again to 122 and finally slows to 66. Completed in 2022, performance time runs about 4 minutes, 22 seconds. In April 1989, I sketched a simpler and shorter version of this three-voice Sinfonia as my final exam for my tonal counterpoint class with Professor Richard Wilson at Vassar College. Although granted two weeks to complete this assignment, I delayed starting my sketch until the evening before it was due. I finalized it by 1 AM the following morning in the Victorian-style Rose Parlor in the Main Building. In November 2020, I extensively revised and lengthened this three-voice Sinfonia with the goal of experimenting more extensively with various contrapuntal devices such as augmentation, diminution, stretto, inversion, and retrograde motion.

Naji Hakim Die Taube (The Dove) was commissioned by â€Kirchenmusik bei St. Anna Augsburg†to celebrate the 450th anniversary of the Augsburger Religionsfrieden (Religious peace of Augsburg). It is based on three biblical verses related to peace : Gen. 8/11, Luk. 1/79, Joh. 14/27. The music is through composed and develops the character of the verses with contrasted string textures, putting in relief the expressive vocal line, declamation of light and happiness. The work exists in three versions : 1. for Tenor and string quartet, 2. for Tenor and string orchestra, 3. for Tenor and organ. First performance : by Robert Sellier, Tenor, Capella St. Anna Streichquartett, St. Anna Augsburg, Festkonzert zum Hohen Friedensfest, 8 August 2005. Gen.8/11 : â€And the dove came in to him in the evening; and, lo, in her mouth was an olive leaf pluckt off. †Luk. 1/79 : â€To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace. †Joh.14/27 : â€Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you. †...to guide our feet into the way of peace. (Luke 1,79) Words and music bind people together to form fellowships which guide us into the way of peace. Singing or playing together combine bodies and souls, so that our rhythm and breathing becomes one - a sense of belonging to one another is created which instils the very nature of peace. So it is that by becoming an integral part of the music, our feet are guided 'into the way of peace'. In Luke chapter 1, both Maria and Zechariah are carried away, body and soul, in hymns of thanksgiving. They let God´s melody resound in their bodies. Ignatius, one of the Early Fathers of the Church, might have drawn his inspiration from them when he wrote to the Christians of Ephesus around the year 100, Let God´s melody resound in you. The melody of our life is a single voice within God´s great melody; an everlasting celestial melody, in which we join together as integral parts - with time, we are gradually shown which chords we are given to touch and which chords to form with one another. God´s inextinguishable melody has an infinite galaxy of variations. As you would know, a variation is rooted but limitless. At our christening, God gives us a variation - an inextinguishable variation because of his promise, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. (Matthew 28, 20). Deeply rooted as we are, God leads us through. He calls us to Life out of His Eternity, He lets his melody reverberate in us and finally calls us back, when we die, to His everlasting future. The lyrics were written in 1847 by Henry Francis Lyte, an English pastor, poet and musician, only a few weeks before he died from tuberculosis. He was inspired by Saint Luke's account of Christ's appearance with His two disciples on the way to Emmaus: They urged Him strongly: Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over. (Luke 24:29). The music was composed by William Henry Monk, music editor of the famous Anglican Church hymnal Hymns Ancient and Modern, and it was included in the first edition of that hymnal in 1861. Mrs. Monk has described in her own words the context: This tune was written at a time of great sorrow - when together we watched, as we did daily, the glories of the setting sun. As the last golden ray faded, he took some paper and penciled that tune which has gone all over the earth. This score is the complete version of Abide With Me for choir SATB.
